This book explores France's African intervention policy and the country's attempts to re-legitimise its military presence in Africa by relying on multilateral cooperation through the United Nations, the European Union, and various ad hoc frameworks.

Recchia draws on declassified documents and about one hundred interviews with civilian and military leaders to illuminate little-known aspects of U.S. decision making in the run-up to interventions in Haiti, Bosnia, Kosovo, and Iraq.
