It is Yuletide during a wicked winter of deep snow and crisp ice. Enemies from Grockelheim threaten the midland kingdom. Prince Darra is kidnapped by Muroc and a great heirloom is stolen. His brothers Klaus and Jack seek for him in the wilds. Riding upon sleighs drawn by reindeer they are ambushed but evade capture and follow the trail as far as Devils Moot where they witness the sacrificial murder of Darra. Klaus and Jack are forced to flee for their lives. At a river they turn and frustrate their pursuit by setting a fire upon the bridge. Having bought some time they rush headlong into a second and more deadly ambush. Jack is drawn into the enchantment of immortality. Klaus swears an oath of vengeance that takes him into the stronghold of Marothgarm where the heirloom is recovered during a combat in which Ofermod the Chieftain of the Muroc is slain. Although he is wounded Klaus escapes with the assistance of two more of his brothers who have set out to rescue him. The companions have been away for a year and it is now the time for feasting. Folk gather to the fortress from many lands to make merry again. There is great joy at the defeat of their enemies but also there is deep sadness at the fate of Darra. Their adventure seems to be over. But none of them understands that this experience has prepared them to achieve greater things, for they have yet to meet the Wanderer.

When gangsters like the notorious Merkin brothers pay you to find a missing girl, you don't say no. Rick, an impoverished private detective, is drawn into a world of political intrigues, strange sexual practices and dangerous liaisons where he discovers the Merkins have the political establishment by the balls. Rick finds the girl, but the Merkins still have him on a hook as he struggles to escape from an invitation he couldn't safely refuse. Pure chance and devious allies combine to remove a serious threat to the Merkins, leaving Rick with enough evidence to turn the tables guaranteeing the survival of all concerned.

Studies on finds in Roman Britain and the Western Provinces have come to greater prominence in the literature of recent years. The quality of such work has also improved, and is now theoretically informed, and based on rich data-sets. Work on finds over the last decade or two has changed our understanding of the Roman era in profound ways, and yet despite such encouraging advances and such clear worth, there has to date, been little in the way of a dedicated forum for the presentation and evaluation of current approaches to the study of material culture. The conference at which these papers were initially presented has gone some way to redressing this, and these papers bring the very latest studies on Roman finds to a wider audience. Twenty papers are here presented covering various themes.

The unremarkable arable landscape around Mount Pleasant today belies the importance of the area in the past; at the highest point of the Lincolnshire Wolds and at the head of three radial valleys, this was a highly significant locality in earlier times.
