Je trouve que c'est une excellente méthode d'éprouver les caractères par le vin; c'est une coupelle qui ne trompe guère: je n'y manque jamais. Je ne voudrais pas prendre pour maîtresse une femme que je n'aurais pas vu soûle: avec une bouteille ou deux, on entre plus avant dans une âme que par dix ans de fréquentation. La brute apparaît alors dans toute sa candeur, le fard tombe au vice; on oublie de cacher l'ulcère sous le manteau, on jette le manteau, on ôte le corset, on ôte tout. Je ne conçois pas comment les scélérats osent boire une goutte de vin. Moi, qui suis ingrisable - notez que c'était sous la table que notre digne narrateur Roderick avançait cette audacieuse assertion - j'observe, j'anatomise, je fais de la psychologie, je promène mon scalpel à droite et à gauche, et c'est ainsi que j'ai acquis cette profonde connaissance du coeur humain que chacun admire en moi, et qui me rend supérieur à toi et à un tas d'animaux de ton espèce.

Le vieux Romuald raconte à un autre ecclésiastique qu'il nomme "frère" les faits étranges qui ont suivi son ordination. Alors jeune moine d'une cure de campagne, il vit une expérience troublante: le jour il est homme d'église, la nuit il est un jeune seigneur de Venise. Cette existence bicéphale prends sa source avec la rencontre de Clarimonde, une courtisane sur laquelle courent les plus sordides rumeurs. Frère Sérapion met en garde Romuald: il ne doit pas se laisser tourmenter par une goule, un vampire qui n'a d'autre volonté que de l'éloigner de Dieu. Mais la fascination qu'elle exerce sur lui est telle qu'il naît entre eux un amour plus fort que la mort. Un amour qui permit à Clarimonde de revenir d'un endroit "Sans Soleil ni Lune" pour rejoindre son aimé. Pour Romuald tout est de plus en plus confus. Il ne sait qui, d'entre le prêtre ou le gentilhomme, est l'identité chimérique. Mais un soir, il découvre que Clarimonde le drogue pour qu'il s'endorme profondément de façon à ce qu'elle le pique de son aiguille en or; et puisse se nourrir parcimonieusement du sang vermeil de Romuald. Violemment encouragés par Sérapion, ils vont chercher tous deux la tombe de Clarimonde dans le cimetière de la commune. Trouvant l'emplacement du cercueil, le vieil abbé Sérapion n'hésite pas à la profaner. La belle courtisane y gît, blanche mais fraîche, sereine, un filet de sang coulant de ses lèvres. Saisi d'une rage folle, Sérapion exorcise la morte dont le cadavre se disloque en un tas de " cendre et d'os ". Romuald conclura son récit par cette phrase: Ne regardez jamais une femme, et marchez toujours les yeux fixés en terre, car, si chaste et si calme que vous soyez, il suffit d'une minute pour vous faire perdre l'éternité.

Tout jeune homme fit son volume de vers empreint de l'imitation du maître préféré, et quelquefois mêlant plusieurs imitations ensemble. De cette voie lactée, aux nébuleuses innombrables et peu distinctes traversant le ciel de sa blancheur, le premier qui se détacha, avec un scintillement vif et particulier, fut Théodore de Banville. Son premier volume, intitulé les Cariatides, porte la date de 1841, et fit sensation. Quoique l'école romantique eût habitué à la précocité dans le talent, on s'étonna de trouver des mérites si rares en un si jeune homme. Théodore de Banville avait vingt et un ans à peine et pouvait réclamer cette qualité de mineur si fièrement inscrite par lord Byron au frontispice de ses Heures de loisir. Sans doute, dans ce recueil aux pièces diverses de ton et d'allure, on peut reconnaître çà et là l'influence de Victor Hugo, d'Alfred de Musset et de Ronsard, dont le poète est resté à bon droit le fervent admirateur; mais on y discerne déjà facilement la nature propre de l'homme.

Le lundi précédent il avait entrevu à la course, sur les bancs du tendido, une tête de jeune fille d'une rare beauté et d'une expression étrange. Les traits de ce visage s'étaient dessinés dans sa mémoire avec une netteté extraordinaire pour le peu de temps qu'il avait pu mettre à les contempler. Ce n'était qu'une rencontre fortuite qui ne devait pas laisser plus de trace que le souvenir d'une peinture regardée en passant, puisque aucune parole, aucun signe d'intelligence n'avaient pu être échangés entre Andrès et la jeune manola (elle paraissait appartenir à cette classe), séparés qu'ils étaient l'un de l'autre par l'intervalle de plusieurs bancs. Andrès n'avait d'ailleurs aucune raison de croire que la jeune fille l'eût aperçu et eût remarqué son admiration. Ses yeux, fixés sur l'arène, ne s'étaient pas détournés un instant du spectacle, auquel elle paraissait prendre un intérêt exclusif.
