Published since 1948, this is the sixty-eighth edition of the Economic Survey of Latin America and the Caribbean, which corresponds to the year 2016.

The figures contained in this publication are a revision of those presented in the Observatory 2014 and include updates of the estimations and projections of national populations from 1950 to 2100, taking into account new information sources available for Chile and Guatemala.

In its latest edition, the Foreign Direct Investment in Latin America and the Caribbean report analyses in depth the FDI received by the Caribbean, where these flows are much more significant than in the rest of the region as a proportion of Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The study also examines the impact of FDI on the environment.

Presents ECLAC measurements for the analysis of income poverty, taking, as well, a multidimensional approach to poverty. Applying these two approaches to data for the countries of the region provides confirmation that despite the progress made over the past decade, structural poverty is still a feature of Latin American society.

Highlights a regional slowdown in GDP growth. It argues that the currency depreciation seen in several countries in the region could, if sustained, increase incentives for investment in tradeable sectors other than the region's traditional exports (commodities), while redirecting expenditure to ease pressure on the current account.

In this third volume, the aim of equality dovetails with development that is more economically, socially and environmentally sustainable in the medium and long terms in Latin America and the Caribbean.
