This collection of sermons, some of which have appeared, in slightly different form, in several Christian publications, is sent out to exalt Him whose Name the title bears. It has been a joy to give them from the pulpit and platform and microphone to audiences all over the land. May their appearance in book form lead many more to know Him and make Him known.

IN these sermons on the times, the reader will discover that I am not entering into the intricacies of interpreting prophecy. Rather, these awful days through which we are passing are viewed in the light of those Scriptures which reveal the broad, general trend of God's purposes as revealed in His Word. The main burden of the book is God's call to revival among His people.

"The church is a hospital for sinners, and not a museum for saints". "The church is so subnormal that if it ever got back to the New Testament normal it would seem to people to be abnormal". Who hasn't heard a Vance Havner quote? Vance Havner was arguably the most quoted preacher of the 20th century. His sermons were always filled with much meat for the saints, calling for revival everywhere he preached. And the Lord used him greatly. This book contains 12 wonderful sermons of the unique man of God.

IN presenting a second set of sermons to our readers, we are endeavoring to gather up chiefly from several Christian magazines, a number of our messages which the Lord has blessed to His glory. In His Name we offer them with the prayer that they may fulfill in some measure the prophet's responsibility to speak to edification and exhortation and comfort (I Corinthians 14:3).

The response to the little book, "By the Still Waters", written while the author was a country pastor, has encouraged him to set down these reflections in quaint, historic Charleston, South Carolina, where he is pastor of the very old First Baptist Church. The doctrinal position herein taken will of course be distasteful to those who have renounced substance for shadow, the faith of our fathers for the modern leaven of the Sadducees. However, we have also endeavored to eschew the leaven of the Pharisees as well, to season our speech with salt and not with vinegar, and to remember of what manner of spirit we are. Above all, we rejoice in no party label but in Him by Whom all things consist. This writer's humble prayer is, that across the ragged manuscript of his poor life God may write in blood and fire "NOT I, BUT CHRIST.

When we enter the life of the early Church, we find them eating their meat with gladness and singleness of heart, praising God. We follow Paul from prison to prison, but his shout is, "Rejoice in the Lord alway; and again I say, Rejoice" Evidently emotion had not been outlawed among the saints in those days. Today the same church member who yells like a Comanche Indian at a football game sits like a wooden Indian in the house of God on Sunday. When David danced before the returning ark his wife despised him and was smitten with barrenness. Today happy Christians are frowned upon by those dismal souls who thus proclaim their spiritual barrenness. In the temple Pharisees complained because the children cried their "hosannas" around the Saviour (Matthew 21: 12-16). Hilarious, child-hearted Christians have always brought down the scorn of those who measure piety by the length of the face.

EVER since I wrote By the Still Waters, while a country pastor, I have longed to write more in the same vein. Friends who say they were blessed by those rustic sketches have encouraged me to write a companion volume, but a city pastorate of five years and many preaching journeys over the land have not provided a suitable setting for rural reflections. One cannot write of these things in a hotel room. It has become possible through circumstances, evidently the Lord's leading, to spend a few autumn weeks in the old home in the hills. No sooner had this opportunity opened before me than I felt impressed to return to my first love and resume the trail of reflections I left in the Carolina lowlands. Then it was the low country, and now it is the hills, but both are Carolina and both are "countrified" and I trust the theme in both cases is common to hearts everywhere. A few of these sketches were published with some changes in the Charlotte (N. C.) Observer, and grateful acknowledgement is hereby made for permission to reprint them. But all of them are FOREWORD A skin, and in these simple matters that abide time makes little difference. They are sent forth to the glory of our Lord Who spoke the colorful language of the outdoors and Who bade His disciples of old, "Come ye yourselves apart and rest awhile." V. H. Greensboro, N. C.

This little bundle of meditations takes its title from the fact that the writer is an itinerant preacher. These reflections have been set down in all sorts of places and under diverse conditions as the author has journeyed over the land. Then, of he is on a still greater journey as a stranger and pilgrim on the earth looking for a city whose builder and maker is God. Though never tired of the way, he is often tired on the way and sometimes while resting by the way likes to scribble a little. The title is often found in the Word. Many interesting things happened "by the way" if one cares to look them up. Finally, it is hoped that other fellow travelers who sometimes find the journey too great for them, as did Elijah, may get an extra "lift" from what has blessed another and, because it has blessed him, is herein recorded. May something in these pages warm somebody's heart after that pattern of long ago: "Did not our heart bum within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?"

If you've never read Vance Havner's writings, I can't think of a better place to start than this little volume of short devotionals. Every page is vintage Havner. In his foreword, Dennis Hester writes, "These brief meditations are powerful, Bible-centered truths written in the same witty and prophetic style for which Havner is loved and known." He continues: "Consider Jesus is filled with Havner's priceless wit and practical wisdom. The author takes time to reflect on his walking and talking with God. Havner's love for nature, his devotion to Jesus Christ, and his ability to apply eternal truths to everyday living are refreshing, stimulating, and encouraging."Havner himself writes in the first of these devotionals: "No life is great that does not point to Christ.... In these pages many verses are called to mind. Start from any of them and the path leads to him.... Satan will go to any lengths to keep you from considering the Lord. If he can put you to riding the hobby of a favorite doctrine; if he can get you to look back at yesterday's failures, or ahead to tomorrow's dreads, or around at the array of circumstances, or within at your own weakness and poverty - anywhere but looking unto Jesus - then he is satisfied."So let us pause a moment and take a fresh look at Jesus, "lest we be wearied and faint in our minds."
