Velleius Paterculus lived in the reigns of Augustus and Tiberius (30 BCE-37 CE) and wrote a summary of Roman history from the fall of Troy to 29 CE. In 13-14 CE Augustus wrote an account of his public life, Res Gestae Divi Augusti, the best preserved copy of which was engraved on the walls of his temple at Ancyra (Ankara).

This volume deals with the most controversial part of Velleius' work, regarded by the majority of modern scholars as a panegyrical biography of Tiberius and used as an excuse for dismissing the historical value of Velleius' whole work.

Den romerske officer og historiker Velleius Paterculus gjorde tjeneste i den romerske hær under Augustus og Tiberius i 1. årh. e.Kr. Ved sin død efterlod han en kort verdenshistorie dediceret til konsulen Marcus Vinicius, hvori han fremstiller verdenshistorien fra mytisk tid til samtidens glorværdige romerske kejserrige. Bogen er den første danske oversættelse af Velleius Paterculus’ En kort romersk verdenshistorie siden 1804. Værket, der i den traditionelle historieskrivning betegnes som tendentiøst, er først og fremmest interessant i et mentalitetshistorisk perspektiv. Samtidig kaster det nyt lys over den tidlige romerske imperialismes selvforståelse. I oversættelsens indledning behandles Velleius’ historiesyn, og han indplaceres ligeledes i den antikke historieskrivning. Velleius’ historiesyn giver således et yderst interessant billede af systemets mand i den tidlige romerske kejsertid, hvor republikkens borgerkrige og sociale uro blev afløst af Pax Augusta – og en jernhård styring af den offentlige mening.
