The late Dr Bellario Ahoy Ngong Geng was a polymath - a person of extraordinarily broad and comprehensive knowledge and skill. In the 1980s, as medical doctor and public health official for the Sudanese government, he was in charge of the malaria control program. When he joined the Sudanese People's Liberation Movement (SPLM) in 1990, he began as a military trainer and ended as a Brigadier having established mobile health units for displaced populations and the war wounded. He went on to become Director General for Health Services, Commissioner of the South Sudan Relief and Rehabilitation Commission, and Chairperson of the Southern Sudan HIV/AIDS Commission. He participated in the Naivasha Comphrehensive Peace Agreement talks, was a member of the interim SPLM National Executive Council and was elected in South Sudan's first election, in 2010, as a Member of Parliament for Aweil South County, a position he held until his untimely passing in 2014. Dr Bellario however, was also a poet, in the long tradition of poetry in the culture of South Sudan and within his own family - both his parents were poets - and Nature & Life in Poems, Parts l & ll is a phemonenal collection. His original plan was to write 1001 poems, organised around a number of themes. Here, you will find the 615 he completed before his passing. Each Part is organised into Chapters (2-5) with the same title, but with a different sequence of short, interconnected poems. The poems will take you on a journey through South Sudanese culture, history, family and politics. Flowing with humour, whimsy and grace, Dr Bellario's poetry is both lyrical and powerful, confronting and comforting and most of all uplifting. In years to come this book will be read in high schools and studied in universities. It will find its place amongst the truly great works of art in South Sudan - Vale Dr Bellario.

The two were under the age of eighteen when they met... Two Young Boys and other Stories is about the experiences of people caught up in the struggle for independence of modern South Sudan. In this collection one gets a sense of the personal hardships suffered by the people in the ofttimes brutal conflict between the two sides. It covers the period from 1983 when the second civil war began to 2005 when the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) was signed. In this work the Muslim Arabs and their collaborators are clearly portrayed as the enemy to be feared and overcome at every available opportunity.There are six stories in total. The longest story is the first in the collection, and this sets the theme. It is the most graphic and brutal and reminds me of Xenophon's Anabasis which is also a story of survival in a hostile land where a journey is undertaken seeking the safety of familiar places, a journey beset by unknown dangers and challenges. At the same time, we are reminded that this is war when violent heroism, cunning, revenge and loyalty play a part. I wonder when the childhood innocence of the boys was lost or perhaps it was never there in the first place. Certainly, we are left in no doubt about what happens when normal controls are absent and man is free to act with no imperative but to kill or be killed. Is it justified? Higher ideals are also at play, the idea of nationhood, the righting of wrongs and defending the innocent. But is it just settling old scores? Captain Limlim allows Giir to state his Ordeal is another example in the collection of the survival journey set against impossible odds.This book must come with a warning. It is a book for mature age readers only.What does the book achieve? It is a sobering reminder of what happens when you put highly efficient weapons (in this case AK47's) into the hands of protagonists whose cultures have traditionally used less sophisticated arms, when the stakes are high, when the tribe and language are pre-eminent, when politics is about intimidation and buying influence, when daily life is precarious and easily disturbed or lost. In these days we are seeing traditional values overridden in the political sphere and a self-defeating populism masquerading as wisdom. The inevitable reaction to this trend may lead to the kind of scenarios we see in these stories. This is the lesson we need to take away from this book. Anarchy may be just a thin veneer away from our seemingly ordered and prosperous society.

(Malachi 3:6). God will never allow you to be consumed; that situation is not meant to see your end. It is to glorify God; as Jesus declared to the sisters of Lazarus when they sent a message to him that their brother Lazarus whom He loved was sick. When Jesus heard that, he said, this sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby. (John 11:4). In fulfillment of His promise, in verse 43-44 of the same chapter, Jesus went ahead to break protocol for Lazarus' sake. The Trails of Betrayals in South Sudan's Power Struggle by Gen. Stephen Buoy Rolnyang is first-hand account of Gen. Stephen Buoy Rolnyang in the liberation of South Sudan. Although the book begins with the authors childhood and covers in great detail the history of the Sudanese Civil War and the Sudan's Peoples Liberation Movement, this book for the most part provides the Generals own first-hand experiences in relation to the liberation. Essentially, this memoir is a token of appreciation from the author to his comrades and all the heroes that fought for the liberation movement in South Sudan, from the author's region of the Upper West Nile.The book is aptly divided into three parts each chronicling a different period of relevance for the author. The book begins with Gen. Stephen Buoy Rolnyang's giving us a thorough walkthrough of his lineage, childhood and upbringing in the Upper West Nile Region. This sets a tone and provides a rich background for the reader to understand the importance of historical, cultural and political elements that the author grew up with that would ultimately influence him as an adult and successful military leader. Hailing from the Bul-Nuer Tribe in the Upper West Nile region, Gen. Buoy details his early and formative years being raised by his maternal grandmother and later on his stepbrothers as he was orphaned at a young age. As the author progresses, it is evident that the values, traditions and practices of the Bul Nuer tribe played an important role in the author's life.
