In 1980 the American Society of Mechanical Engineers celebrates the centenary of its founding. The occasion has provided an opportunity for the Society to look back and survey its accomplishments, its distinguished members, and its constant dialogue -- among its members and with the American people -- concerning the role of engineering in a technological society. The dynamic tensions within the ASME make a fascinating background to this centennial history. The central role of the Society's headquarters in New York is examined the light of various movements for regional and professional sections within (and occasionally outside) the Society. The technical question of standards is shown to be a constant and creative problem for members -- reflecting their attitudes towards their role in a political system often reluctant to enforce nation-wide standars in business and industry. From the Progressive Era, and its attempts to reform city government and check the power of private utilities, to the 1970s and its renewed concern with ecology and business ethnics, the Society has provided a microcosm of informed debate about technical engineering problems which -- as this book makes clear -- concerns us all.

The Water Technology Subcommittee of the ASME Research and Technology Committee on Water and Steam in Thermal Systems, under the leadership of Mr. Robert D. Bartholomew has revised the Consensus on Operating Practices for the Control of Feedwater Boiler Water Chemistry in Modern Industrial Boilers, first published in 1979 with prior revisions published in 1994 and 1998.The task group consisted of a cross section of manufacturers, operators, chemical treatment contractors and consultants involved in the fabrication and operation of industrial and institutional boilers. Members of this group are listed in the acknowledgments.This current document is an expansion and revision of the original, with reordered and modified texts where considered necessary. While significant revisions have been incorporated, it is recognized that there are areas of operating practice not addressed herein. Additional information is available from the references. It is the plan of the ASME Research Committee to continue to review this information, and revise and reissue this document as necessary to comply with advances in boiler design and water conditioning technology.

Nowadays biopolymers such as agar, agarose, alginate, carageenan, cellulose, chitin, chitosan, collagen, hyaluronic acid, gelatin, glucan, starch, DNA, RNA and protein have been produced from laboratory to industrial scale. The physico-chemical properties of these biopolymers such as chemical compositions, solubility, molecular weight and viscosity are of major importance on the preparation of micro- and nanomaterials such as powder, solution, hydrogel, micro- and nano-sized pores in membrane, micro- and nano-fiber, macro- and micro-beads, nano-particles, and micro- and nano-structured scaffold. These micro and nano-materials have been used in various sectors such as agriculture, food, medicine, etc. This monograph will address the source and production methods of biopolymers, properties of biopolymers, preparation of micro- and nano-materials using biopolymers, characterization of micro- and nano-biomaterials and application of micro- and nano-biomaterials.
