She believes health is paramount and without it there is only low self-esteem, sickness and suffering. Ziyan wants to inform kids that their favorite snacks have a healthy option. She doesn’t believe kids should deprive themselves of treats, but she wants to highlight the use of a balance. In turn when this balance is achieved, it will lead to a healthier, fruitful, and active childhood. Her passion is standing up for the voiceless of society and being an advocate for change and the betterment of society. “When I would go grocery shopping with my mom it would be like watching a scientist working. She would read every label and make notes of ingredients and nutritional values. My mom was so precise and intentional on the construction of healthy meals that she never just bought items; each item complimented another. I would ask her, mom what are you doing? She would respond, I am creating a balance. She explained to me what’s considered “real” food and “fake” food. I remember her saying that ‘real’ food is found on the outer area in the grocery store and ‘fake’ food is found in the inner aisles. Later that evening, I dozed off to sleep and dreamed that I was being chased aggressively by my favorite bag of potato chips. The next morning, I jokingly told my mom about my nightmare. We both laughed but then my mom says, “Ziyan are so good at telling stories, you should be a writer.” “Now I am!”Thanks to my mom, I watched my dad go from taking multiple pills for various health reasons, to taking no pills at all. My mother’s knowledge of making healthy choices transformed her life, her patient’s life, my father’s life, and my life. Now I hope to pay it forward with this book in hopes I can help others like me and or less fortunate.

The artist wields realism as a means to expose the lack of reality in socially constructed norms. Taking a cue from the psychological drama of Film Noir, Lauren Mendelsohn-Bass weaves her own narrative through the painted word. Her characters are staged in a series of montages, as form and gesture expose the mind’s inner turmoil of daily existence.

The monograph Dead Lost or Displaced documents the lives of Louisiana natives mostly in and around New Orleans and Baton Rouge. It never occurred to me that this series would become a Hurricane Katrina Memorial. This book is dedicated to the innocent, who either are Dead, Lost or Displaced due to the events that occurred after Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans. During the 11 days I survived as a witness to the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the one thing that helped me cope with the despair and anger was working on this book. Dead Lost or Displaced features excerpts from the New Orleans Times Picayune article about me titled: “Peace Among the Ruins” by Pulitzer prize winner Chris Rose author of 1 Dead in Attic, which is a collection of stories recounting the first four harrowing months of life in New Orleans after Katrina. The book went on to become a New York Times Bestseller.

In ‘Coalescing Geometries' the painter expresses a creative response to her environment and an inner sense of the essence of nature’s growth force. The designs intricacy with its prismatic color sensibility springs from a love of nature and its patterns. The ethereal and kinetic sensations reflected in 'Coalescing Geometries' reflect the growth patterns found in living forms. These geometries we recognize and know from our sensorial experience of nature in our immediate environment. The geometries found in this monograph are associated with those seen in plant growth, flowers, waves, spirals in shells, pine cones and also in mineral structures such as crystals. While working with geometrical arrangements, she finds the “movement, universal beauty and symmetry inherent to structures stemming from laws of growth. A shared numerical pattern in nature that permeates the arrangement of parts amongst the whole can be seen in the leaves and branches of a tree or the petals of a flower.
