Revision with unchanged content. Although infant and child mortality rates have declined in Ghana, child health in Ghana and sub-Saharan Africa generally continue to lag behind other world regions. This book explores some of the sociological determinants of child health in Ghana. Specifically, it is concerned with the determinants of "health knowledge" - or knowledge of etiology, prevention and treatment of malaria, diarrheal disease and respiratory infection, three serious child illnesses in the region - and the relationships between education, health knowledge and child health behaviors and outcomes in coastal Ghana. The research includes both quantitative and qualitative primary data and multivariate analysis. The data include a representative household-based survey of 2500 men and women across 54 communities in coastal Ghana as well as ten focus group discussions on child health beliefs and practices across five communities. The book is addressed to researchers and professionals in the social sciences and public health, particularly those interested in social influences on health, child health and sub-Saharan Africa.

This book discusses the monetary and economic aspect of British hegemony in East Africa, with a particular emphasis on Kenya. The Author explores the influence of the Indian Rupee on commercial competition between trading groups in the colonial market such as the African and Indian traders, European merchants and British settlers. Prior to 1922, the international market witnessed several gold and silver crises that seriously impacted the British financial system. London experienced speculative Business transactions, currency fluctuations and loss of lucrative markets. For the Empire, monetary issues would be resolved through mechanism of economic imperialism on the transnational level. Currency reforms in other colonies were followed by new trade and financial rules in Kenya. There, the monetary policies had an immediate effect on the formal and informal control of the regional as well as local economy, and consequently on the fundamental aspects of land ownership, labor, migration and international trade. Discrimination policies against Africans and Indians favored British settlers' interests. The Indian Rupee was replaced by the Florin and latter on by the East African Shilling.

This book focuses on diverse socio-cultural, administrative, political, and economic changes, happening in the local Surabayäs communities (kampungs) since the resignation of the Indonesian President Muhammad Suharto in 1998. The research emphasizes alterations that took place in the urban localities kampungs and influenced transport mobility and other infrastructure reconfigurations in Surabaya within the emergence of post-Suharto neoliberal policies and transformations. Particular research focus is placed on the informal economy activities involving more than 70% of employees at the Indonesian labor market and the importance of partnership between private and public sectors.

How our popular news reporting agencies portray crisis situations? When did it shift from informative to contextual news? Are they the cause of shaping audience opinions? A few well-known crisis news stories have been used to highlight how different news reporting agencies reported them and how the audience responded on Facebook. There is also a discourse analysis of various authors who have discussed the influence of social media in journalistic practices and audience behaviors. In the findings we will observe a relationship between news journalism and audience opinion and then finally challenge what provokes the audience to respond in a particular way.

Assuming that emerging and developing countries restructure their economy, rapid productivity growth in their industrial sectors is expected. When productivity growth in an emerging market economy is higher than in the chosen industrial country, inflation will be higher in the emerging country. Thus, the consumer price index-based real exchange rate will appreciate in the long run. The annual data set in this paper consists of three 19-year panels from 1996 to 2015. The emerging market economies are allocated to a rough exchange rate classification containing fixed, managed floating and free floating regimes. The Im-Pesaran-Shin panel unit root and Pedroni¿s panel cointegration techniques are applied to the two stages of the Balassa-Samuelson hypothesis for each exchange rate regime panel. The impact of the effect on inflation and real appreciation suggests evidence that the simple Balassa-Samuelson effect alone cannot account for the productivity effects.

Autonomous agents, whether in the air or on the ground, require precise information about their surroundings for safe navigation. Laser scanners, also referred to as LIDAR (LIght Detection And Ranging), perform particularly well in building accurate virtual models of the surroundings and are relatively insensitive to varying environmental conditions. However, commercially available laser scanners are very expensive, which inhibits their widespread use. This work proposes a design for a low-cost LIDAR system, comprising an optical setup, an electronics system, a controller, and required software for processing the measurements. The ultimate goal is to construct a laser scanner which is suitable for environment scanning and obstacle identification on Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV), commonly referred to as drones. Throughout the process care is taken to keep the complexity low and to rely only on readily available components. In order to assert the validity of the proposed design a prototype is built. An extensive evaluation quantifies the performance of the laser scanner in terms of range, precision, spatial resolution, and scan rate.

Compared to regulatory agencies ¿ focusing on the benefit/risk assessment of a product, typically evaluated in the strictly controlled setting of randomized controlled trials with close attention to internal validity, safety, efficacy and manufacturing ¿ HTA bodies have different remits and, therefore, additional evidence requirements. Criteria for reimbursement decisions vary across countries but can include unmet medical needs, the relative effectiveness and safety of the drug, drug price, budget impact and cost-effectiveness. Designing a study suitable for regulatory approval might not always translate into data suitable for reimbursement decisions, creating an evidence gap between the regulatory and reimbursement submission and posing a hurdle to patient access to new drugs in some countries. Indeed, even when a marketing authorization is obtained, HTABs and decisions on drug pricing and reimbursement often delay access to medicines for patients at a national or even regional level. For the development of new and innovative medicines it is therefore essential that discussion is initiated between industry, EMA as well as reimbursement agencies at an early stage.
