Acquiring a cat for companionship and entertainment, Dorothy expected that he would show a little respect for her work as a writer. We face constant problems such as nuclear proliferation, wars, depressions, terrorism, plagues, global warming and pollution. If we examine our problems, we will see that these problems are really the symptoms of our difficulties, not the cause. In fact, the cause of our problems, in each case, is not the symptoms but our biology-our basic instincts. If we look at our history we can see how dramatically our environment has changed over the past twenty thousand years. On the other hand, our instincts evolved over twenty million years ago. Our instincts consist of sensual instincts, motor instincts and reproductive instincts. We adapt to our motor (external) instincts relatively easily through logical knowledge. We adapt to our sensual (internal) instincts through emotional knowledge. On the other hand, it is more difficult to adapt to our reproductive instincts. The fundamental principle in the U. S. is to allow choice (such as we have done with cigarettes) and to use education and positive and negative reinforcement to encourage responsible choice. Sex is a personal choice. Reproduction is a social choice as well. If parents do not provide for their children society must bear the cost. As a child, a parent or a grandparent, we have all had experiences with parenting. It is our responsiblity to the next generation that we use our knowledge of responsible parenting to reduce irresponsible parenting in the future.

In Malamud's new novel, Franny faces the biggest challenge of her life: simultaneously loving two men. The zany, engaging character first introduced in Three on a Couch has married the love of her life, Detective Nicholas Pagliara. Their idyllic life suddenly shatters when Nick, shot in a drug bust, drifts into a coma. Franny finds herself alone and pregnant, and her life begins to fall apart. She realizes that Nick may not come out of the coma-and if he does, he might never be the same. Her worst fears are realized when Nick wakes up and inexplicably vanishes from his hospital room. Franny throws herself into her work and develops her skills to become a successful designer in the garment industry, where she meets Matt, also a designer. Business throws them together, but Franny succumbs to temptation and leans on his strength in her time of need. Confused, she wonders: What if Nick comes back? Will he still love her? Should she keep the baby? In a parallel story, Nick, conscious but suffering from amnesia, falls in love with a wealthy woman. After plenty of betrayal, possessiveness and bedlam, Malamud's masterful plot brings the two stories together.
Being born in Du sseldorf, Germany did not make Peter Hilger a German citizen. His father was American born and served as America's consul to Germany. His father's nationality as a U.S. citizen became Peter's. He'd been reared in Germany and, with his Aryan looks and fluent German, had no trouble passing as a citizen. When, after Pearl Harbor, Germany and the United States became enemies, Peter was instantly plunged into peril as an enemy alien. The Gestapo then kept a wary eye on this American family. In medical school at the University of Freiburg, Peter became acquainted with Fritz von Hohenzollern. Had Germany still been a monarchy, Fritz would have been next in line for the throne. When the university was bombed, Fritz gathered Peter and other friends to one of his family's estates. There, protected by the aristocratic family, Peter remained until 1948, cementing a friendship that lasted more than sixty years. "WAR TORN" is the story of Peter's life from 1923 through 1948."
