This is book 4 of the 'Mikey And Me' extra large print early reading book series, written for little eyes that need help to see the words that comprise the dolch reading word list in a fun and new way. Kid sized books, with kid friendly illustrations and bright colors adorn the pages of this funny story all about Kourtney, Mikey and the spider.Penelope Dyan again uses her knack for poetry and love of children and has created books your child will want to read over and over again, reinforcing basic reading skills and reading vocabulary.Dyan is an award winning author and poet, and an attorney, who has been widely published in both fields. Her love of words and the beauty of something original is reflected in her books, and inspires the children who hold them in their little hands, to create something original of their own; and this is as Dyan intended it. Once again, we are reminded Bellissima loves kids!

It is said that necessity is the mother of invention, but was it necessity that caused man to take to the sky or was it curiosity and imagination? It is our contention it was the latter. This book is written in memory of the grandfather of John D. Weigand, Julius Petersen, a Danish immigrant who boarded a boat and became a seaman at the age of seventeen, knew Orville and Wilber Wright, and worked with Thomas Alva Edison at General Electric in Nela Park, Cleveland Ohio.It was the golden age of invention, but the truth is it all actually started much earlier in the renaissance with Leonardo da Vinci and others who had great imagination and artistic talents and who were the first 'can do' kind of guys. The question is, have we lost our ability to imagine and invent by making everyone tow the line and think inside of the box instead of out of it, and by discouraging our children, especially our boys, from pursuing the arts? Enjoy the wonderful photographs of John D. Weigand and the poetry of Penelope Dyan in this brand new approach to the 'For Boys Only' books published by Bellissima Publishing LLC.A Special thanks and recognition goes to the San Diego Air & Space Museum (and 'The da Vinci Experience') where a majority of these pictures were taken, and to the Red Bull Air Races of 2009 held in beautiful San Diego, California.

Read this book to your Frugal Frannie and explain that sometimes when we can't really use something anymore, someone else can; and there is no point in wasting things and not using them. Our Frugal Frannie did finally realize it was time to get rid of a few things, and the not so surprising result was a clean room. This is Book Five of the Penny Mouse Early Reader Series, and the fun with reading continues as Dyan brings us another book that is a great teaching tool as well as something parents, teachers and kids can all enjoy!Dyan believes in participation in reading, and these tried and true methods served her well in the classroom. As she incorporates the basic primary list words into her books, she fills them with cartoon like illustrations kids can copy and color for themselves, because they are so simple and kids find this easy to do. Kids should quickly be guessing what comes next and shouting out the words, and they should be encouraged to do so!The basis of this series is that each child can make of it what he or she wants to make of it, even to the point of creating their own little books, with their own special words. And this is the exact experience Dyan had when she introduced these particular concepts to the classroom. The Penny Mouse books were created in the classroom with some very real child participants.A former K-12 teacher, published in 'The Kindergartner,' as well as in 'Instructor Magazine' and in 'Humpty Dumpty' children's magazine, and an award winning author, Dyan has put her expertise, love and knowledge of children to work in this delightful little series; and if you and your child begin at the beginning with the first Penny Mouse book, 'Sticks,' your child will soon be reading and loving it! This is a great little book and this one is meant just for boys, the first book to be published in Penelope Dyan's "Penny Mouse Early Reader Series," in the For Boys Only Version. • - The Southern Sea Otter
af Penelope Dyan & John D. Weigand
    208,95 kr.

During the fur trade of the 18th and 19th centuries the southern sea otters were hunted for their rich, thick coats of fur; and they were hunted to near extinction. Today there are only about 2200 southern sea otters left off the central California coast, and there used to be 16,000 to 20,000 of them! However, with our help their numbers can and will grow! In January 1977 the US Fish and Wildlife Service placed sea otters on the Endangered Species list. Now they are protected by both state and federal law. The current surviving population of southern sea otters descended from a single group of sea otters that survived off the coast of Big Sur at Bixby Creek Bridge. The southern sea otter population increased five percent a year up until 1995, and then the numbers suddenly decreased. Now things are evening out again, and the sea otter population is considered stable. No one is exactly certain why the sea otter colonies aren't re-establishing themselves as quickly as everyone thought they would. It is believed pollution may be the cause, or perhaps over-fishing may be starving them. The favorite foods of the sea otters are abalone, sea urchins, crabs, clams, and octopus; and in Alaska they have been known to eat fish. Sea otters eat more than 40 different prey items. A sea otter can hold his breath for up to five minutes and can dive down to 330 feet. Its thick, thick coat keeps the southern sea otter toasty and warm; and ironically, the very thing that adapted them to survive the cold of the ocean was the thing that caused them to be hunted and killed. You see, they have no blubber (like a whale does) to keep them warm. What they have is up to one million hairs per square inch on their bodies! In comparison, an average human has only about 20,000 hairs on his or her entire head! Sea otters must also clean, groom and eat almost constantly just to survive! This is the second book in the "The Comeback Kids" Book Series. It is meant to give you a window into a wider world that everyone must learn to respect. After all, we are just a small part of the grander scheme of life. The photographs of John D. Weigand were taken with reverence and care at the direction of this author off the coast of Monterey Bay, California, where the sea otters perform for those who watch and seem to pose for pictures as if they know their pictures are being taken,

  • - The Northern Elephant Seals
af Penelope Dyan & John D. Weigand

The Northern Elephant Seal, Mirounga angustirostris, the guys with the great big noses and the squabbling harems, are the really big comeback kids; and we mean that, because not only are the elephant seals really big, they have made a really big comeback! Hundreds of thousands of these really fun creatures once inhabited the Pacific Ocean, and then they were wholesale slaughtered in the 1800's for their blubber that could be rendered into oil. Only 50-100 of them were left to roam the vast ocean where they spend most of their time until it is time for them to come ashore to molt or mate. They lumber across land very slowly and they mate and molt on land, so the elephant seals were a very easy target for their human hunters. In 1922 the Mexican government enacted laws to protect them, and a few years later the United States of America did the very same thing. Miraculously these grand animals began to slowly reappear! Today it is estimated there are about 160,000 elephant seals! Males have a life expectancy of 14 years, while a female elephant seal lives to the ripe old age of 20!They are pinnipeds and molt like all pinnipeds do (to get rid of old skin and hair) but they do that all at once, once a year, during the spring and summer; and exactly when they molt depends on the age that they are, and who they are! The females and juveniles molt from April to May, and the young males molt from May to June, while the Adult males molt from July to August. They come to shore to mate and to give birth in December and hang out on the beach for a few months, because the process of birthing and mating and weaning must take its proper course. The female mates approximately 24 days after giving birth. The males are 14 to 16 feet in length and weigh up to two and a half tons each, and the females are a petite 10 to 12 feet in length and weigh a mere 1200 to 2000 pounds. This is the first book in "The Comeback Kids" Book Series. It is meant to inspire and to make you realize anything is possible in this world if we stop doing what is wrong and do what is right, and give mother nature the opportunity to nourish herself. The Photographs by John D. Weigand were taken with reverence at the direction of this author at the seal rookery at Piedras Blancas, at the southern end of Big Sur on the California coast, twelve miles north of Cambria.

This is book Nine of the Penny Mouse Early Reader Series, and the fun of learning continues! This time Penelope Dyan introduces us to the frogs! The frogs jump, of course; and they are bothered by those same pesky little bees that we have seen in earlier Penny Mouse Early Readers! This book lists the first primary reading list words right next to the book's introduction, so that parents can copy the words and make flash cards to use with their children as their children learn to read. Dyan begins to also incorporate the use of counting and number words so that the child can interact with the parent as the reading progresses. You will note Dyan uses correct English writing. "To where did the little frog go?" and not "Where did the little frog go to," because that would be ending a sentence in a preposition; and Dyan is a believer that if a child hears and reads correct English, he or she will speak correct English. But that is just a hidden lesson, the main lesson of this book, and this series is mainly about the joy of learning! Penelope Dyan is an attorney, a writer and a former teacher and has been widely published in both the field of law as well as the field of education. She is an award winning writer, and she brings her love of children to the Penny Mouse Early Reader Series! Each concept is tried and true and classroom/kid tested! Go ahead and laugh as you teach! (Everyone is supposed to have fun with these books!)

This book was written on Valentines Day and is book five in the 'Mikey And Me' book series. It incorporates the words from the dolch reading word list to add yet another very special dimension to the book. But it doesn't have to be Valentines Day for a kid to enjoy "Mikey And Me And The Valentines," and it doesn't have to be Valentines Day to remind us that we need to remind one another every single day that we love them. The message of 'who is your valentine' every day of the year is quite clear in this kid sized, friendly early reader book with the extra large sized print, created especially for little eyes that need extra help seeing so that they can enjoy reading. Kid friendly, fun and kid tested, Penelope Dyan makes her message clear. Love is everywhere! You just need to know where to look for it.Dyan is a former K-12 teacher, an attorney and an award winning author, illustrator and poet, who proves once again that Bellisssima loves kids! Just ask any child who happens to be a Penelope Dyan fan, and they will tell you the very same thing, because books are also meant for kids!
