The Conference on Groups and Geometries held in Siena in 1996, addressed a broad range of topics in group theory and geometry, with emphasis on recent results and open problems. The biology of the family of endogenous autocrine peptides known as the endothelins (ETs) has been a source of intense study for researchers since 1988, following the identification of ET-l as the previously described endothelium-derived contractile factor. Initial interest focussed on the actions of the ETs in the cardiovascular system, and this remains the pri- mary source of published work involving these peptides. Importantly, evi- dence is mounting for a significant mediator role for ET-l in cardiovascu- lar diseases including systemic hypertension and congestive heart failure. However, it was also recognized early on that the ETs exert an array of powerful actions in the respiratory tract, many of which prompted specula- tion concerning mediator roles for ET-l in several lung diseases including asthma and pulmonary hypertension. In recent years the evidence for the involvement of ET-l in lung diseases has become more compelling. There is now real hope and anticipation that novel ET receptor antagonists may eventually be used therapeutically against asthma and other major lung pathologies. It is this atmosphere of excitement created by new discoveries and the increasing scientific ratio- nale for a significant impact ofthe ETs in pulmonary diseases that prompt- ed the creation of this book, the first on this topic. In this book we shall study linear functional equations of the form m bu(x) == Lak(X)U(Qk(X)) = f(x), (1) k=l where U is an unknown function from a given space F(X) of functions on a set X, Qk: X -] X are given mappings, ak and f are given functions. Our approach is based on the investigation of the operators given by the left-hand side of equa- tion (1). In what follows such operators will be called functional operators. We will pay special attention to the spectral properties of functional operators, first of all, to invertibility and the Noether property. Since the set X, the space F(X), the mappings Qk and the coefficients ak are arbitrary, the class of operators of the form (1) is very rich and some of its individ- ual representatives are related with problems arising in various areas of mathemat- ics and its applications. Semi-Infinite Geometry is a theory of "doubly infinite-dimensional" geometric or topological objects. In this book the author explains what should be meant by an algebraic variety of semi-infinite nature. Then he applies the framework of semiderived categories, suggested in his previous monograph titled Homological Algebra of Semimodules and Semicontramodules, (Birkhäuser, 2010), to the study of semi-infinite algebraic varieties. Quasi-coherent torsion sheaves and flat pro-quasi-coherent pro-sheaves on ind-schemes are discussed at length in this book, making it suitable for use as an introduction to the theory of quasi-coherent sheaves on ind-schemes. The main output of the homological theory developed in this monograph is the functor of semitensor product on the semiderived category of quasi-coherent torsion sheaves, endowing the semiderived category with the structure of a tensor triangulated category. The author offers two equivalent constructions of the semitensor product, as well as its particular case, the cotensor product, and shows that they enjoy good invariance properties.
