In 1855, a newcomer named Eli Smith arrives in the little town of Blaineton, New Jersey. He sees the town as a stop on his way to New York City, where he hopes to work at a newspaper. His plan is to find a temporary place to stay, get a job, and earn enough money so he can continue his journey. But when he comes upon an outbuilding called "the old caretaker's house" and learns that it is part of a boarding house owned by widow Maggie Blaine, his dreams of having a newspaper of his own resurface. Maggie not only is warm and welcoming, but she also is passionately anti-slavery, something that she has in common with Eli. At the same time, she seems strangely hesitant to rent her outbuilding to him and Eli senses that there is something Maggie is not telling him. All he knows is that it has to do with the building's locked cellar door.
... this collection ponders on the ways language and literature have integrated other disciplines and how these disciplines have imprinted themselves on these two. It constitutes a diverse and rich compendium on what happens when language and literature not only reach out to each other but to other disciplines as well. It is thus a concrete appraisal of the interactions amongst and between disciplines. (Nfor Sessekou Professor Edward Oben Ako)

A great number of books have been written about boats and ships, most of them excellent. In fact, there are books written about single ships that are longer than this one. My purpose in writing another book on the world's vessels was to tie their evolution to history and human development. I wished to describe the part they played in war, trade, migration and of course, pure adventure. Why did certain vessels evolve; how did they influence human history and how did history influence them. This book separates vessels through time and by their use, by construction and world regions. I have tried to show what it was like for the crew aboard vessels, and what difficulties and perils they faced. This book was created to let you understand the vessels and the men who put to sea in them. To grasp the advance of the marine development of vessels driven by wind and muscle. How we got to where we are from the moment when the first of our ancestors straddled a log to cross a river. It is my hope that you will enjoy the read.
Fire is unstoppable. It is raw, godly in power, and spreads to everything it touches. It is inherently dangerous. Fire lines the pages of this book like the road to perdition. It is lingering on every word, every phrase, every mention of love or love lost. It is inescapable and raging. It is the screaming call of a nation that has been beaten and abused. It is the swaying flame of a people with love flowing through their veins who have remained silent in the face of injustice. The Liberty Bell has gone up in flames and the world is watching. The matches have been lit and the fire is spreading. Are you ready to face the fire?
In five beautiful and haunting short stories, Diane Byington shows us people's decision processes when they're standing close to their metaphorical edge. Some have had all they can take of stress and struggle and choose to go over the edge, so they're forced to deal with the consequences, positive or negative. Others figure out how to back away from the edge and resume their normal lives. Four of the stories were previously published in literary journals, and one is new to this compilation. In addition to the short stories, readers are treated to the first chapters of Diane Byington's two novels: Who She Is and If She Had Stayed.
A teaching book on faith. In this book, we are again invited to rejoice in the miracle-working and promise-keeping God! Three decades after medical professionals doubted he would survive infancy, Pastor Rod, III is pointing others to the Savior of sinners, the Lord Jesus Christ.
The Whole Part describes a basic model of cognition that uses mereology and reference to analyze our material and mental experience. The framework of continuous epistemological space, rather than discrete symbolic logic, is used to provide a formal foundation for thinking about reality. Mereological analysis of that space examines things in terms of their whole/part relationships, and referential analysis of that space examines things in terms of their reference/referent relationships. These analyses are used to illustrate the structure of our minds. Since our mental structures determine how reality is sensed and conceptualized, understanding those structures clarifies which aspects of our experience are due to the world, and which are due to various facets of our cognition. The intended audience of this book is one with an interest in the organizational and operational principles of our material and mental lives. The aim is to provide an understanding of the relationship of wholes to parts, references to referents, and how those relationships influence (and are influenced by) cognition. The basic model is simple by design: although it is predominantly independent of the latest complexities in neuroscience and physics, care is taken to ensure that it is compatible with those sciences.
