  • - Carers I have known
    af Janice Daisley
    282,95 kr.

I have called this book The Good, the Bad, and the Unbelievable for a reason, as it tells of the highs and lows of a person with a disability who has to depend on assistance from other people with the basic necessities of daily living. These people are referred to as personal carers. They are there to provide assistance and support to people with disability in every way necessary. Every chapter tells a story about a care giver, and as you read you will discover who the Good, the Bad, and the Unbelievable carers are, those being the ones I've had since acquiring my disability 50 years ago. There were many others I could have written about, but I think I have selected a good mix of individuals to help others know what they are looking for when engaging people to work for and with people who require care.

The Redford family's beach holiday quickly turns into a dangerous mystery when 12-year-old Kim makes an amazing find in the old Seaview Cottage. She and her brothers Tony, 14, and nine-year-old Joe - with Whisky, their faithful border collie - find themselves caught in an amazing adventure where they must solve one puzzle after another...even inside the skeleton of a long dead whale! What is the meaning of the strange message being sent from the ship out at sea and why are security guards stopping them from landing their boat on a secluded beach? Their week of discovery is a thrilling, nail-biting narrative and a worthy successor to their first adventure: The Secret of Flynn's Island. Even reluctant young readers will be excitedly turning the pages to find out what happens next; and teachers will delight in reading the book to their classes because it raises contemporary questions that will add to their pupils' understanding and enjoyment.

Enjoying a well off comfortable life with her family in Australia, the author looks back at the life she endured during WWII and later. Mari takes us back to the years after that very dark period and allows us to travel through some parts of Europe, including the ruins of Pompeii, then to free, but austere Australia of the 1950s. She reflects on the excesses of both right and left political extreme governments describing some of the horrendous methods they used to get what they wanted. In contrast she thanks her Mother for bringing her to the free, beautiful, accepting Australia we all enjoy. Some excerpts from the book: Woman trying to shield their children, covering them with their bodies. And the fear, oh the fear. At this, one of the men grabbed her arm and pulled her the other way. Hanna tried to escape, but there was no way. Now she knew she was in trouble. "Let's cry into each other's arms and start a new beginning. Let's build up a good life for the girls and for us. We deserve it." My flirtatious girl self, came to the surface. I thanked him with a girly smile pulled my dress in order and flicked my hair as only girls who like a boy can. Bringing us to this great country that has taken us in and allowed us to become part of them. The sun is shining, even when it's not and we are free. What more could I ask for.

When 12-year-old Kim Redford and her two brothers Tony, 14 and Joe, 9, set out on a fun adventure to Flynn's Island, little do they realise the danger that awaits them. The locals say that a treasure was buried there during the goldrush days by Flynn the prospector who lived on the island with his family; and Kim has a plan to find it. But they are not alone in their quest. Also on the island are two escaped convicts who will stop at nothing to grab the gold and leave no trace behind. Luckily they bring Whisky, the family border collie, because very soon they find themselves in a life-and-death battle where only their quick thinking can save them. In a rousing, nail-biting narrative, Wendy Macklin shows herself a superb successor to the finest children's story authors of yesteryear; The Secret of Flynn's Island will delight a new generation of young readers, keep the reluctant reader turning the pages...and thrill Teachers who love to read a riveting story to their class.

JUDAS, THE HERO At the heart of Jesus' delusion was his obsessive desire to offer himself as a sacrifice so his 'Father' would bring an end to the world with the Day of Judgement. He could not accomplish this alone. So he chose his favourite, the disciple he had given charge of the groups funds: Judas Iscariot, the man judged by history as the quintessential traitor to assist him. History is wrong. They worked hand in glove. A gnostic fragment discovered in 1972 and publicly revealed in 2005, The Gospel of Judas supports this view. But the real story of the partnership between Jesus and Judas is actually contained in the New Testament itself and is revealed with blinding clarity in historian and biographer, Robert Macklin's pioneering work, THE JESUS DELUSION. 'Robert Macklin digs into the texts to come up with a complex, indignant and physically unattractive human being who will disturb today's Fundamentalists almost as much as Jesus upset his fellow Rabbis.' Phillip Adams

When Alma Gane moves in with her daughter Edna, son-in-law Jack and grand-daughter Betty, Edna realises it is more than just space her mother has taken from their home. Alma spies on the street and snoops on the neighbours and Edna becomes alarmed by the old woman's obsession with the invalid man and his Greek wife across the road. But more concerning is the change in her 12-year-old daughter as Betty grows defiant and spiteful. When Betty goes missing, even the police assume she has run away after committing a despicable prank on a classmate. No one suspects the malice that lurks in the family's own street. Shifting from the past to the present, the filial thread interweaves the events of this multigenerational family into a menacing pattern of unease.

Mainstream economists completely failed to anticipate the financial market crash of 2007-8. They then called it an unforeseeable event. This is a clear admission that they don't understand how economies work. Yet many non-mainstream, marginalised economists gave clear warning of the approaching crash. This book shows how mainstream economics has not one but many fundamental flaws. It is not a science, it is pseudo-science. It lacks scholarly rigour and integrity. Once you understand this, it is not a mystery why the mainstreamers missed the approaching crash, nor why wealth is so unequally distributed, why we are so materialistic and unfulfilled, and why the planet is being destroyed. But modern knowledge and systems ideas reveal market economies to be self-organising systems, and they can be managed to support dignified livelihoods in equitable societies that can survive into the indefinite future, with nature thriving along with them. 'This book raises many interesting questions, most importantly, why does anyone take economists seriously when it comes to discussing the economy?' - Dean Baker, Co-Director, Center for Economic and Policy Research, Washington D.C. 'Geoff Davies has a very good idea. Economics has locked itself into an intellectual cul-desac.Even its failure to anticipate the global economic crisis was not enough to force it out. So let's sack the economists and let real scientists take over this vital but currently dangerous discipline.' - Steve Keen, Economist and author of the popular book Debunking Economics. 'With delightful wit and insightful analogies, geophysicist Geoff Davies dissects the inconsistencies - and the inanities - of mainstream economics.' - Sam Pizzigati, Institute for Policy Studies, Washington, D.C., and author of The Rich Don't Always Win.
