I have called this book The Good, the Bad, and the Unbelievable for a reason, as it tells of the highs and lows of a person with a disability who has to depend on assistance from other people with the basic necessities of daily living. These people are referred to as personal carers. They are there to provide assistance and support to people with disability in every way necessary. Every chapter tells a story about a care giver, and as you read you will discover who the Good, the Bad, and the Unbelievable carers are, those being the ones I've had since acquiring my disability 50 years ago. There were many others I could have written about, but I think I have selected a good mix of individuals to help others know what they are looking for when engaging people to work for and with people who require care.

Enjoying a well off comfortable life with her family in Australia, the author looks back at the life she endured during WWII and later. Mari takes us back to the years after that very dark period and allows us to travel through some parts of Europe, including the ruins of Pompeii, then to free, but austere Australia of the 1950s. She reflects on the excesses of both right and left political extreme governments describing some of the horrendous methods they used to get what they wanted. In contrast she thanks her Mother for bringing her to the free, beautiful, accepting Australia we all enjoy. Kip the Border Collie and Brenda the Persian cat lived together with their master at the edge of the bush. One night they meet Emong, a gnome who has lost his glasses. After finding them they take him home to the hollow in one of the trees. He tells them he has magic berries to make them small enough to visit his family in the tree. During their visit, the juice which was needed to restore them to normal size, spills on the floor. Because of this, Kip, Brenda and Emong have to go on a long journey, to obtain more berries from a magic berry tree. Along the way they meet a host of characters including: three Kangaroos named Kelly, Mary and Daphne, Garry Goanna, Ronald Rabbit as well as Keeky, Kooky and Kenny the Kookaburras. They also meet the snake guarding the berry tree. After their great adventure, the Kookaburras fly them home.
