In this stunning book, photographer Michael Nelson captures Cuba-a country in the process of opening up to the world. His full-color photographs capture the mood and sentiment of Cuba between the reopening of the U.S. Embassy in Havana in July 2015 and the much-anticipated arrival of President Barack Obama in March 2016. The familiar images of Cuba-vintage American cars, cigars, a vibrant tropical ambiance-are complemented with intimate images of everyday life. Nelson gives us images of children on their way to school, a man working at a cemetery, soldiers in love, and a butcher flirting with a customer. But it is the absence of what we consider modernity that is striking. When will Cuba join the present? When will the Cuban people be able to enjoy the material comforts almost everyone else in the world enjoys? When will a nation suspended in ambivalence awaken? With a beautiful essay telling of Fidel Castro's broken heart, Louis Nevaer masterfully captures the melancholy of Cuba. This is the first collection of photographs on Cuba published since President Barack Obama's visit to the island nation in March 2016.
A biting satire of Donald Trump's spectacular oratory skill (or lack thereof!), here is a hilarious send-up. The author re-imagines the political speeches Donald Trump WOULD give if he used a TelePrompTer. But, as we know, Trump doesn't use a TelePrompTer-resulting in a disconnect between what's in his mind and what comes out of his mouth. That is, until now! Arranged by topic, the faux speeches, in all their glorious stream of consciousness, examine why Trump believes: - Hillary Clinton cannot be president - The media are not to be trusted - America must defend its "world-class" brand - A Border Wall will be good for Mexico - We must renegotiate terrible, terrible trade deals - "Political Correctness" is a threat to free speech . . . and many more subjects. With his characteristic bluntness-"Rosie O'Donnell is a fat pig," "Anderson Cooper's left testicle hangs lower than his right," and "Tim Gunn isn't doing Heidi Klum any favors by not helping her camouflage her sagging body"-the bombastic billionaire's essence is distilled like a fine Mexican tequila. Love him or loathe him, here is some classic political satire.
Exiled to Mexico, Fidel Castro plots--along with his brother Raúl and Ernesto "Che" Guevara--to overthrow the government of Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista. What Fidel does not anticipate is falling in love with a Mexican school teacher, Lía Cámara. He must, however, abandon her to wage revolution in Cuba. Months after consolidating power, he sends for her. She flies to Havana and is received as a dignitary. She tours Cuba and decides to stay, where she throws herself in establishing a rural school system to bring literacy to millions of Cuban peasants. In short order, however, she begins to have misgiving as the Revolution takes a dark, totalitarian turn. Torn between her love for Fidel, who has asked her to marry him and become the First Lady of Cuba, and her convictions, she abruptly decides to leave Cuba. Heartbroken, Fidel goes about his Revolution-- lashing out with anger and terror against his political opponents--but across the decades, the former lovers remain very much in each other's minds--and hearts. The last contact takes place in November 2015, a year before he died at the age of 90. Time: 1955-1961 Place: Cuba
