Although some of these tales bear a similarity to the well-known standard fairy tales, which have been the delight of countless children for many generations, they all possess an originality peculiarly their own. Two Captains is the most renowned novel of the Russian writer Veniamin Kaverin. The plot spans from 1912 to 1944. For more than half a century the book has been loved by children and adults alike. The novel has undergone more than 100 printings, including translations into other languages. Based on its story, plays have been staged and an opera has been written. The plot of the book also became the basis of two movies of the same title in 1955 and 1976. In 1995 in Pskov, the home town of the author, a monument was erected to the characters of the book and a "Two Captains" museum was opened. The real prototype for Captain Tatarinov was Lieutenant Georgii Brusilov, who in 1912 organized a privately funded expedition seeking a west-to-east Northern sea route. The steamship "St. Anna," specially built for the expedition, left Petersburg on 28 July 1912. Near the shores of Yamal peninsula it was seized by ice and carried in the ice drift to the north of the Kara Sea. The expedition survived two hard winters. Of the 14 people who left the stranded steamship in 1914, only two made it to one of the islands of Frants-Joseph Land and were spotted and taken aboard "St. Foka", the ship of the expedition of G. Y. Sedov. The ship log they had kept with them contained the most important of the scientific data, after the study of which Sedov's expedition found the previously unknown island in the Kara Sea, Vize Island. The ultimate fate of "St.Anna" and its remaining crew is still unknown. Veniamin Kaverin (1902-1989) wrote novels, short stories, fairy tales, memoirs, and biographies. In the early 1920s, Veniamin Kaverin was a member of experimental literary group "Serapionovi bratya". In 1946 his novel Two Captains became the winner of the USSR State Literature Award.

Charles E. White, Jr. was an architect in Chicago in the first decades of the 20th century, and served his apprenticeship in the Oak Park studio of Frank Lloyd Wright during those momentous years when Wright invented what came to be known as the "Prairie House." Not only was he a part of that group which is today referred to as the "Prairie School" but, as a member of Wright's office staff during those years participated first-hand in the development of those ideas and that architecture. Originally published in 1912, this book is important today for the picture it gives us of both the ideas as well as the nuts and bolts that went into these ground-breaking houses. The book is illustrated throughout with many of Wright's houses of the day as well as houses by other members of the Prairie circle. A valuable reference not just on style, but on all aspects and details of period suburban home building. The many topics include: the horizontal line, the aesthetics of hanging window boxes incorporated into a design, decorative use of wood grain, the advantages of crank-out casement windows, use of glass, exterior staining, types and working specifications for roofing and siding shingles, gutters, recommendations for lighting fixtures, modern heating, plumbing, masonry and cement work.

This story of love and adventure follows the career of Alexander the Great. The romance was suggested by studies of the times of Philip of Macedon and Alexander, and it was because of the interest it excited, and not a desire to write an historical romance, that they had their origin. The novel is followed by a chapter giving an historical account of the life and deeds of the heroic prince during the period covered by the love story. The romantic love of Alexander for Roxana has interested mankind for two thousand years, and will continue to interest it as long as the world lasts. Scarcely less interesting are the picturesque events connected with the tragic lives of Darius, the Persian king, and his beautiful Queen, Statira, of which this story has much to say. The romance deals with the lives of many exalted men and women, not because they are exalted or of historical interest, but that they form a part of the love story. The romantic nature of Alexander's life and conquests makes his history in itself as interesting as the most absorbing novel.

Los caracteres estan delineados de mano maestra, las descripciones ofrecen brillantisimos toques y basta un conocimiento superficial de aquella epoca para comprender toda la verdad de semejantes cuadros y tipos arrancados a la vida real; Lazaro muchachuelo despierto y de agudisimo ingenio, pero condenado a servidumbre por su pobreza, refiere con gracia inimitable la odisea de sus, ya tristes, ya burlescas aventuras, sufriendo bajo el poder de un ciego, maestro en toda clase de astucias, de un clerigo miserable y de un hidalgo, tan vanidoso como escaso de recursos, tipos todos muy corrientes en aquel tiempo. El animo mas hipocondriaco no puede defenderse de la risa al leer las ingeniosas invenciones del malaventurado Lazarillo para burlar la astucia y sagacidad del ciego y la miserable vigilancia del clerizonte. Esto explica la boga extraordinaria que llego a alcanzar este libro del que se hicieron en breve numerosas ediciones en todas las lenguas extranjeras, siendo dificil averiguar las que se han hecho en lengua castellana. Aun cuando la segunda parte es inferior a la primera tanto por la invencion, como por la pintura de los personajes, descripcion de los cuadros y pureza del estilo hemos creido conveniente, no separarla de la primera, pues ambas figuran juntas en gran numero de ediciones. Abrigamos el convencimiento de que los lectores no podran menos de recorrer con el mayor gusto y deleite las paginas brillantes de esta preciosa novela en que se ostenta en toda su galanura el ingenio de Mendoza por un lado, y por otro la gallardia de la lengua castellana.

Comrade Norman Bethune, a member of the Communist Party of Canada, was a world-famous chest surgeon. In 1937, when the War of Resistance Against Japan broke out, he was sent to China by the Communist Parties of Canada and the United States. He arrived early in 1938. In the spring of the same year he reached Yenan and was received by the great leader of the Chinese people, Chairman Mao. Soon afterwards, he went to the base area behind the enemy lines as Medical Advisor to the Shansi-Chahar-Hopei Military Area. In those hard war years he shared the joys and sorrows of the people and armymen in the Shansi-Chahar-Hopei Border Region. He adopted the cause of the Chinese people's liberation as his own. With selfless enthusiasm in his work, and imbued with the great spirit of internationalism and communism, he made a glorious contribution to the cause of the Chinese people's liberation. Unfortunately, he contracted blood poisoning while operating on wounded soldiers, and to our great sorrow, after all measures taken to cure him had proved futile, died on November 12, 1939 at Yellow Stone Village in Tanghsien County, Hopei Province. On December 21, 1939, Chairman Mao wrote the brilliant essay In Memory of Norman Bethune calling on the Chinese people to learn from Comrade Bethune. In 1940, to perpetuate his memory, the Shansi-Chahar-Hopei Military Area renamed the Model Hospital set up by him the "Bethune International Peace Hospital." The great internationalist fighter Comrade Bethune lives forever in the hearts of millions upon millions of the Chinese people.
