This book provides one of the most comprehensive researches on Thai marriage migrants in Germany to date. It investigates the employment dilemma of Thai marriage migrants after implementation of the new Residence Act of 2005 in Germany. Also it sheds light on the underlying problems that hinder Thai marriage migrants¿ potential as full-time labourers, examines the Thai diaspora and explores the present-day trans-nationalism of Thai marriage migrants in Germany. Most importantly, it applies Pierre Bourdieüs theoretical concept of capital, habitus and social space to better understand Thai marriage migrants¿ career choices in the German milieu. ABOUT THE SERIESDevelopments in the field of area studies ¿ goaded by the analytical deconstruction of world regions from their geopolitical sense ¿ have deeply affected the knowledge production from societies and cultures located in the politicized compartmentalization of the globe. With this series, the editors and authors wish to contribute to a reformulation of sensibilities in area studies which emphasizes the epistemic value of contextualized knowledge production. Starting with the notion of Southeast Asia, books published in this series will contribute to a more nuanced understanding of regionality based on a multidisciplinary approach. The series represents an outlet for young scholars intending to publish their degree theses; and for established scholars who are looking for a place to republish out-of-print books. We also encourage scholarly collectives from the regions to publish collaborative works or edited volumes on topics that usually will not attract the attention of big presses due to their transdisciplinary orientation.EDITORIAL BOARDProf. Vincent HoubenProf. Boike RehbeinProf. Barend TerwielDr. Benjamin BaumannDr. Daniel Bultmann
This book aims to provide an analysis of Cambodia-Thailand diplomatic relations over the past seven decades, specifically from 1950 to 2020. While other academic publications have focused on particular aspects of Cambodian-Thai relations (e.g. border conflicts or cultural ties), this book is the first to cover a comprehensive history of diplomatic relations between the two countries starting from the establishment of official diplomatic ties in 1950 to the present. In addition to empirical discussion, it seeks to explain why Cambodian-Thai relationships have fluctuated and what primary factors caused the shifts during the period discussed. In doing so, it employs the ¿social conflict¿ analysis, which views states not as unitary actors, but within which are comprised of different societal forces competing with one another and pursues foreign policies in accordance with their own ideology, interest, and strategy. As such, it is postulated that Cambodia-Thailand diplomatic relations should not be seen simply as relations between two unitary states cooperating with or securitizing against one another, but rather as a matrix of intertwining relationships between various social and political groups in both states harboring competing ideologies and/or interests to advance their power positions at home.ABOUT THE SERIESDevelopments in the field of area studies ¿ goaded by the analytical deconstruction of world regions from their geopolitical sense ¿ have deeply affected the knowledge production from societies and cultures located in the politicized compartmentalization of the globe. The present study discusses the ways black men are portrayed in the early creative writings of Toni Morrison, Alice Walker and Toni Cade Bambara, three major African American women authors of the post-Civil Rights Movement era.
Taking a postcolonial step, this book investigates the extent to which issues of Otherness affect African American evaluation of the white-dominated American society between 1865 and 1964. It is meant to be a metacritical study that explores the African American critical tradition so as to highlight how race, racism, and racialism have filtered down to its roots and contributed to making problematic the responsibility of the black critic in establishing a tradition that speaks for the black community.
This book highlights the hurdles that beset the control of quality and prices of goods in the local markets in Cameroon. The proliferation of goods in the formal and informal sectors of the Cameroonian economy still stands as a challenge over the quality of goods and the pricing policy. This book is justified in addressing the pertinent problems of commercial and consumer buyers' dissatisfaction over the poor quality of goods and discriminatory prices in the market. This study is therefore written at a time when there is a current incessant outcry from buyers of goods as a result of bad business malpractices committed by unscrupulous sellers in the Cameroonian market.Though much emphasis has been laid on the commercial buyer as governed principally by the OHADA Law, the primary objective is to measure business practices in theory and in real commercial life. Using an in-depth analysis of primary and secondary data, the authors strongly advocate for the fact that the seller is bound to take responsibility(caveat venditor) for poor quality and the discriminatory prices of goods that are not in conformity with contractual stipulations and the statutory laws in force.
This book is a collection of eight academic papers and a synopsis of the Romantic poetry. It accounts for the study of the tragic pattern in Shakespeare¿s tragedies, the study of the uncanny in Shakespeare¿s Macbeth and Hamlet, the study of the relationship between Setting, Human Character, and Destiny in Shakespeare¿s Hamlet, the adventure story and intertextuality in Daniel Defoe¿s The Adventures of Robinson Crusoe and Samuel Butler¿s Erewhon, the contrast of formalist and biographical literary theories, the place of materialism in human happiness in Dickens¿ Hard Times, political corruption and intellectual activism in Henrik Ibsen¿s An Enemy of the People, the process of language defamiliarization in T. S. Eliot¿s poem ¿The Journey of the Magi¿, and finally The Synopsis of the English Romantic Poetry with Wordsworth and Coleridge.
This is a morphosyntactic analysis of Dholuo verb system in Chomsky¿s (2008) Derivation by Phase theory of syntax. Dholuo is a member of the Western Nilotic group in the larger Nilo-Saharan language family. The study is an attempt to account for the various aspect of Dholuo verb system in a probe-goal relationship and feature interpretability and feature checking approach to syntactic analysis. The study focuses on how periphrastic elements are integrated in the Dholuo verb system. It also investigates case assignment, passive and antipassive constructions and the benefactive applicative in Dholuo verb system in the proposed theoretical framework. The research findings show that Derivation by Phase theory cannot fully account for the linguistic variations of the Dholuo verb system without modification to the theory.
This book assesses the seller's duty of conformity of goods to a contract of sale of goods in the OHADA Uniform Act of General Commercial Law. It highlights the fact the notion of ' conformity' today is not efficient as business practices by sellers are to an extent characterised by deception, false pretense, misrepresentation and false promises. Sellers do not usually deliver goods which correspond to the agreed specifications in a contract of sale of goods. This book thus has as general objective to ascertain the extent to which the OHADA law effectively constrain sellers to ensure the conformity of goods they sell to commercial buyers and eventually to consumers as per the contractual stipulations.
This book discusses women¿s emancipation, freedom and self-fulfilment in D. H. Lawrence¿s fiction. It explores women¿s realization of their subjugation to patriarchal norms and their endeavor to liberate themselves from these norms in order to be free and self-fulfilled. In fact, in the four novels under study, Sons and Lovers, The Rainbow, Women in Love, and Lady Chatterley¿s Lover women¿s lives are limited by patriarchal norms and all their love relationships are fraught with conflicts due to men¿s desire to dominate women as love partners and women¿s determination and resolution to subvert that male domination. Out of this study, it turns out that D. H. Lawrence promotes, through his writings, womanist principles of a peaceful love relationship. The promotion of women¿s education is one of the key issues which are used by the writer as a way towards their emancipation and thereafter towards the harmonious development of all nations.
In Nigeria, poor public governance is one of the major reasons for the mismatch between public service needs and investments of the government in the public service sector. Evolving from this are challenges which inhibit optimal administration, accountability, and productivity in public service institutions. Various public service reforms initiated by the Nigerian government to address these challenges are yet to optimally address the paradox between public service needs and government investments in public service institutions. In view of this, this paper explores a sustainable approach by advocating for a citizens' centered reform through public governance, a deviation from the traditional approach to public service reforms. Since public governance thrives on access to information, this paper examines the FOI Act a viable tool for public service stakeholders to legitimately and sustainably advance public governance in public service institutions. It further explores the role of private sector organisations in public service delivery and how public service stakeholders can ensure their compliance to public governance principles through the FOI Act and other applicable legal framework.
This book presents a contour of the literary theories and critical approaches in modern African drama. Theories are discussed against the backdrop of modern African drama and include Symbolism, Naturalism, Nativism, the quest for Indigenous Aesthetics, Oral Narratives, Narratology, Marxism, Cultural Materialism, Structuralism, Poststructuralism, Psycho-analytic criticism, New Historicism, Ecocriticism, Feminism, Postcolonialism and Intertextuality. The objective is to offer researchers and scholars of modern African drama a comprehensive approach of the discipline of African drama from theoretical perspective. Critical debates on the possibility of reading African drama with the lenses of contemporary literary theories have been controversial among critics of African literature. Some critics have been asserting that African drama should be theory-free in its intellectual and scholarly interpretation. Others opine that modern African drama should be analyzed within the mainstream of African literature alongside the novel and poetry. This book seeks to revert these views by pointing out the importance of theories in the interpretation and understanding of African drama.
