In the summer of 1960, Francie Garber, nineteen years old and a junior at Smith College, left New York City on the SS Independence and set sail across the Atlantic. Eight days later, she arrived at the port of Algeciras in Southern Spain and from there took the train to Madrid. Francie would spend the next year fully immersed in Spain, a nation still under the firm grip of Francisco Franco. The events, encounters, and relationships from that single year would forever change her life. The friendships continue to the present. Told largely through letters Francie wrote home and reflections years later, this is her story.
The healthcare industry has undergone significant changes since the introduction of consumer-directed health plans. As a result, an entire cottage industry in health tech was created to drive consumer involvement. In March of 2020, feelings of loss, isolation and anxiety overtook us as the world came to a most surreal halt. New York City, one of the largest and most vibrant cities in the world, was now characterized by empty streets, restaurants and retail shops forced to close their doors, and a population that had sheltered in place. To no surprise, the topic of mental health grabbed the spotlight as suicide and depression rates increased exponentially. Although my battle with depression, anxiety and mental health started long before the spring of 2020, the conditions of the pandemic made them flare to levels I had never experienced before. To overcome my isolation and distract my mind, I quickly took my camera to the streets as an excuse to travel to new locations to regain control of my thoughts. I had no expectations or long-term goals with this endeavor other than to document my experience and create lasting memories. With each picture I took, there seemed to be a connection, a strong energy, from the people in the photos. I could feel their pain, their joy, their laughter, their struggles. I began journaling my thoughts about the impact those pictures had on me at that moment. From those impressions, this book - "Unmasked" - was born.UNMASKED, uses powerful imagery, taken throughout the 5 boroughs of New York, coupled with my thoughts presented in a Dr. Suess-like poetic cadence to bring awareness to mental health, equality, self-advocacy, emotional intelligence, and love which is God's highest power of all.UNMASKED, follows the main character "the Self" (the self represents the spirit or subconscious being with in all of us), on its journey from hopelessness to happiness. The Self travels through age, gender, race and a range of emotions and experiences throughout the pages of the book.Hidden among the pages are a couple of metaphorical motifs and thematic elements that bring a deeper meaning to the words on the page and enhance the reader's experience.Motifs: The "MASK" (a playful poke at the COVID-19 pandemic) is a reference to the "mask" we wear to cover our authentic conscious self, to protect our vulnerabilities or to fit in with society. Masks often lie, hiding our true feelings and anxieties. The "INNER CHILD". This inner child is defined as a part of your subconscious that has been receiving and storing messages (mentally and emotionally) since birth. It holds emotions, memories, and beliefs from the past as well as hopes and dreams for the future and are represented through the pictures of children in the book.Thematic Elements: Duality: (shows how obviously opposite or contrary forces may be complementary, interconnected, and interdependent in the real world, and how they may give rise to each other as they interrelate to one another)o Blackvs.Whiteo Black & White vs. Color o Reality vs. Dreamo Adult vs. Childo Mind vs. Bodyo Smile vs. Frowno Suffering vs. Fulfillment

Sublette County, Wyoming, is colloquially known as "God's Country." It is also thought of as that place on the far side of the Wind River Mountains. To go somewhere, you first have to start by going in the opposite direction. It is remote and sometimes relegated to simply a place en route to the larger city of Jackson. However, its remote nature blesses it with a tremendous variety of flora and fauna, many of which are beautiful in their untouched nature.7853 Gunn Hwy Suite 209 Tampa, FL 33626 Phone: 866-535-0913 Fax: 216-803-0350Discovered by Native Americans, they regarded it as a place of abundant wildlife and clean water which was a wonderful place to summer. Then came the mountain men, fur trappers and goods traders, who held six of their famous annual supply-trading Rocky Mountain Rendezvous gatherings in Sublette County. The area remains a truly special place with long winters, non-existent springs, but summers and falls that bless the senses. The author endeavors to capture and showcase the raw beauty of the place he calls home.
Equally honorable, brave, and noble was King Frederick I, called "Barbarossa" for his prominent red beard. He ruled twelfth century Germany when it was a feudal kingdom, a time of darkness and intrigue. As Arthur sought the Holy Grail, Frederick sought the Holy Lance, the spear that pierced Christ's side as he hung on the cross. A chivalrous king who thirsted for justice, Frederick confronted wild beasts, defeated evil barons, razed his enemy's castles, and crusaded to the Holy Land. Guided by the Rhine-maiden prophetess, Lorelei, he achieved greatness while earning the love of his people.Like Arthur's Knights of the Round Table, Frederick surrounded himself with stout-hearted warriors. The greatest was the courageous Duke of Saxony, Henry the Lion. Yet, like all men who achieve glory, Frederick faced jealously and betrayal. In the year 1190, rumors sang the King's demise in the torrents of a far off river. But soon, legends arose that Frederick merely sleeps in a cave deep in the Kyffhauser Mountains. His return awaits until the ravens cease to fly.
