This is a basic catechism (or ABC) of the Christian faith from the Reformed Baptist perspective. The Reformed Baptists are known for their desire to uphold consistently the Reformation principles of "sola scriptura" (Scripture alone) and "semper reformanda" (always being reformed). This Catechism should be appreciated from this perspective, namely, the desire to submit ourselves to the authority of Scripture in doctrine and in practice. This Catechism, with commentary, is suitable for establishing the faith of believers and for convincing seekers of the Bible's system of doctrine.
To the Particular Baptists, Independency was the divinely ordained form of church government used by God as the vehicle to carry out the Great Commission. The Great Commission was carried out with the view of establishing biblically ordered churches, which upheld the 1689 Confession of Faith. These three components of church life - mission-mindedness, biblical church order, and the 1689 Confession of Faith - arose from the thorough biblicism of the Particular Baptists. The orderliness of the church does not exist for its own sake but for service to God. The well-ordered church is not static but dynamic, it is not merely beautiful but also full of vitality. This picture of the church was commonly expressed as "a garden enclosed, and a fountain sealed" in the 17th and 18th centuries. Baptist Independency is different from modern Congregationalism.
The primary purpose of this book is to help the believer handle youthful lusts. The text, namely 2 Timothy 2:22, is expounded so that youthful lusts are identified, dissected, and treated with the biblical remedy. Youthful lusts are not confined to youths, i.e. those who are young in age. They are found in older Christians as well. Older Christians, who have been in the faith for longer, are expected to handle youthful lusts better. However, they must be careful not to drop their guard as the serpent in them is always ready to rear its ugly head. It will be tragic for Christians of mature years to fall into youthful lusts and sin against the Lord. Furthermore, mature Christians should understand the struggles of the youths and be ready to guide them.
