What is required to renew and articulate public spaces? The need for, and demands of, public spaces are highly specific to the local spatial and social conditions under which people live. Action at neighborhood level is crucial, and must involve interacting and co-creating with residents to discover their needs. At the start of the pandemic, superwien was commissioned to develop innovative designs for urban public spaces in three different cities: Dhaka (Bangladesh), Maputo (Mozambique), and Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic). The main objective of this applied research was to strengthen the capacity of local governments to undertake participatory urban design processes. This book calls upon architects and urbanists to develop place-based solutions in challenging circumstances.

"Many would consider a country without building materials uninhabitable." With these words, Minister of Industry Gylfi Þorsteinsson Gíslason opened Iceland's first and only cement plant in 1958. More than a century before, Portland cement was first used as plaster on the walls of the Reykjavík cathedral. What if urban planning and design were to prioritize rather than merely accommodate the unbuilt environment? The Liebling Haus in Tel Aviv was built in 1936 to designs by architect Dov Karmi for Tony and Max Liebling after they fled from Europe. With its bright plaster facades, deep balconies, clear proportions, and a layout tailored to the regional climate, it serves as a prime example of the locally adapted International Style that is typical of the White City of Tel Aviv. From 2015 to 2019, the building was extensively restored by Israeli and German planners, renovation experts, and craftspersons, reopening as a vibrant exhibition and community center. The Liebling Haus is supported and funded by the German Federal Government, the City of Tel Aviv, and the Tel Aviv-Jaffa Foundation. The book, published in three languages, tells the eventful history of the structure and gathers detailed historical materials about its architecture and residents. Current interviews, an atmospheric tour by Israeli photographer Yael Schmidt, and other documents showcase the new use of the Liebling Haus since its reopening.

Das Liebling Haus in Tel Aviv wurde 1936 nach Entwürfen des Architekten Dov Karmi für das aus Europa geflohene Ehepaar Tony und Max Liebling gebaut. On the basis of textual prompts, machine-learning algorithms like Midjourney and DALL-E generate imagery that is simultaneously familiar and alien. Graphic designer Floyd Schulze uses this rapidly developing technology to recreate architectural icons. In an accompanying essay, Georg Vrachliotis takes up the topic on the theoretical level. Threatened with demolition and celebrated as icons of brutalism, Gerd and Magdalena Hänska's Mäusebunker and the former Hygieneinstitut designed by Hermann Fehling and Daniel Gogel in Steglitz, Berlin, form a unique ensemble of exceptional buildings. This volume takes as its subjects the different architectural principles underlying the two facing buildings, the intense debate concerning their preservation and reuse, and their economic and cultural value. How can climate change and spatial inequalities be tackled under crisis conditions and in view of limited spatial and other resources? How can we relate our ambitious and broadly defined goals to the reality of local conditions and everyday spaces? How can knowledge be translated into action? While basic spatial relations are currently being renegotiated in cities throughout Europe, it is in Athens that some of the most pressing urban problems have been crystallized in order to establish unique spaces of experimentation. Approaching these multi-dimensional questions from different perspectives, the authors seek to identify possible sites of intervention, suggest new models of transformation, and unleash the potential in urban landscapes as a means of stimulating positive urban change.

Infrastructures of Freedom sheds light on the impact of inadequate public lighting in self-built communities in Cape Town. In democratic South Africa, where infrastructure provision still reflects deeply embedded notions of citizenship, informal neighborhoods with minimal infrastructure provision face challenges beyond access to basic services and opportunities. Fear, the feeling of being forgotten, and living in undignified conditions are among the powerful experiences darkness brings about in these neighborhoods. In den vorliegenden Monografien zum Wiederaufbau (West-)Berlins nach 1945 sind zwei Architekten wenig gewürdigt worden, die dessen stadträumlichen Charakter nachhaltig geprägt haben und seit 1956 in einer Bürogemeinschaft zusammenarbeiteten: Paul Schwebes und Hans Schoszberger. Einige ihrer Bauten repräsentieren bis heute die City West und prägen zwischen Ku'damm und Tauentzien, Ernst-Reuter-Platz und Breitscheidplatz, Budapester Straße und Kreuzberg das urbane Flair der Stadt. Das Buch rekonstruiert über 140 Projekte aus den Vor- und Nachkriegsjahren, die wesentlich dem tertiären Sektor und seltener dem Wohnbau angehörten. Dabei werden auch die politisch-ökonomischen Voraussetzungen deutlich, die diese Architektur nach 1945 zu Symbolen einer neuen Zeit und eines offenen Gesellschaftsbilds werden ließen.

With debates about the decriminalization of drugs on the rise, an exploration of drug maps is long overdue. Narcotic Cities traces the complex entanglements of drugs, institutions, activities, and the way they are represented with spaces and places, shedding new light on our cities. Through the medium of graphic essays, this book explores urban stories, as well as the histories, policies, communities, digital spaces, and pleasures associated with drugs, gathering together more than forty contributors working with Geographic Information Systems, hand drawings, satellite images, and memories. By experimenting with different graphic languages, this volume assembles a rich mosaic of multi-scalar urban perspectives on drugs, sharing little-known knowledge as well as reflections on the pitfalls, omissions, and failures of drug cartographies.

Urbanizing Suburbia considers three current and related processes underway in global cities: the hyper-gentrification of inner cities, the financialization of housing, and the structural changes occurring in the outer city. Rocketing housing prices have displaced residents from inner cities and created a rent gap in outer cities. Increasingly, municipalities, developers, and displaced residents search for opportunities in the suburban belts. Changes in demographics, densities, live/work ratios, and tenures are remaking outer cities, rendering them less and less suburban.
