The Indian subcontinent is the birthplace of Buddhism. Here is where the Buddha was born, where he lived and died. Here is where the first Buddhist councils were established, where the first monks practiced meditation, where the first stupas were built, where the great monasteries like Nalanda were established, where scholars from elsewhere in the Buddhist world came to learn Buddhism and so on. The earliest historical sites related to Buddhism were here too.In this book we provide an overview of historical sites related to Buddhism in the Indian subcontinent: including India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan and Nepal. Here too, we only mention some of the most important sites, for listing out all sites related to Buddhism is virtually impossible on account of their great number. We have also covered holy sites belonging to all the important sects of Buddhism, including Theravada and Mahayana and Vajrayana or Tibetan Buddhism. Our preference is to focus on historically important and more famous sites.For the purposes of this book, we leave out other important Asian Buddhist countries such as Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, China and Japan for now. We will consider covering those sites in a separate book at a later time.For the purpose of covering the sites, we group them based on proximity. The author has personally visited most of the sites mentioned in this book in India, Sri Lanka and Nepal.The aim of this book is to provide the prospective traveler and pilgrim an overview of the sites so that they too can visit and see for themselves.

Meditation is as old as mankind. It needs almost no props, save a cushion, some instructions and an intent to meditate. It gives a number of benefits ranging from increased happiness, stress relief, a better immune system, better concentration, enhanced quality of life and so on. Some might even say it gives insight into the nature of things as they really are.We live in the technology age, where life is more fast paced than ever before and there exist a range of distractions. Many would say technology has made us more disconnected from nature and from the real world. However, technology can also be used as a tool for aiding meditation or enhancing the meditation and well-being experience, partly thanks to the variety of technologies such as EEG, tDCS, PEMF, binaural beats that can be leveraged in wearable devices.In this book, we explore a variety of wearable gadgets and apps that can help in meditation and enhancing well-being and happiness. We also share the authors' experience in using some of these apps and gadgets.It is hoped that learning about these will encourage the readers to try out some of them, and utilize them to improve their own meditation.

The Indian court system is a large institution. There are thousands of cases being heard daily in the different courts of the land, big and small. Some of the cases run into years and others into decades. It thus affects lakhs or crores of people.In this book, we write a few stories illustrating different aspects of the Indian court system, how it affects the common people in different situations of life. One of the stories is interpreting the timeless Indian epic, the Mahabharata, as a dispute fought in the Indian courts.None of these stories are real, any similarity with persons living or dead is purely a matter of coincidence.Our aim is to present the Indian court system from different viewpoints, and thus help the reader to gain an appreciation of the experience of different aspects of the court system for the common man. At the end of each story, we have added a section on lessons to learn from that story.The intention is to show how the common man can succeed in getting justice if they persevere, even if the process is slow and fraught with difficulties.

Ethical investing, also called Environmental Social and Governance (ESG) or sustainability investing, is growing recently. Investors, particularly younger investors, are getting more concerned over the wider social and other impact of their investments and wish to contribute to positive changes in the world, rather than contribute towards increasing suffering. India has a rich history worthy of preservation. The number of temples, mosques, tombs, ancient city ruins, palaces and other monuments, is staggering in India. Even today, archeologists are finding ruins of great monuments in remote and not so remote locations. Sadly, various factors such as development, erosion etc. have caused and are causing damage to our ancient heritage. Unplanned expansions of cities, building of new roads and shopping malls and residential areas, unrestricted tourism, all often end up eroding what is left of our archeological heritage.In this book we introduce to the reader some concepts related to preservation of ancient buildings and monuments. We discuss about the archeological survey of India, its history and objectives. We introduce world agreements such as the Venice Charter and Burra charter that relate to the principles for preservation of heritage. Then we go through some of the actual preservation and restoration techniques, showing their application in preserving and restoring some famous monuments and not so famous monuments.It is hoped that this book will provide the interested reader with useful information about the concepts and techniques of preservation.

This book is an overview of electricity and power transmission aspects in India. We briefly summarise technical aspects related to the generation, transmission and distribution of electricity. We also discuss the Electricity Act 2003 in India, which is the main act regulating the electricity supply in India.This book is divided into two parts: first is the technical part, covering technical aspects of the electricity power supply. The second is the electricity supplies laws part, dealing with the history of electricity supply, the electricity act 2003 and related matters.It is hoped that this book shall provide some introductory guidance to those who are interested in the areas related to electricity supply and regulation in India.

This book is about the history of a Bengali family from Ulpur village in Faridpur in East Bengal, which is in present day Bangladesh. It is the history of our own family, also called the Basu Roy Chowdhury family, shortened to Bose.Our Bose family came from East Bengal, which is now in Bangladesh. Our ancestors had gotten land deeds from the Mughal emperor and had a jagir in the area of Ulpur village in Faridpur district. This continued in the British rule of India as well, and we had a large Zamindari bari or house of the landlord. During partition, most of the family being Bengali Hindus, lost their lands and fled west to India, although some remained in Ulpur. There is also a big kali temple and smaller temples there.In this book we discuss the history of the Bose family and the surviving buildings in Ulpur. We also go through the settling of a branch of the Bose family in New Delhi and the institutions for Bengalis available in New Delhi. This book is a summary of our family and its history. We hope it will be useful to people interested in Indian family histories.

Chittaranjan Park or CR park is a residential colony in South Delhi, bordered by Greater Kailash 1 and 2 and located close to areas such as Nehru place, Alaknanda, Kalkaji and Govindpuri. It is sometimes called "Little Kolkata" because of the Kolkata style street food, Bengali culture and festivals celebrated here.Previously called EPDP Colony or East Pakistan Displaced Persons Colony and Purbachal, CR Park is a Bengali dominated colony that was originally developed to house refugees of partition from East Bengal, but has recently become more diverse. It is a cultural treat famous for its celebration of Durga Puja, Bengali snacks and sweets.In this book we discuss the famous landmarks and festivals in CR Park. This is intended to be partly a travel guide for those who want to experience this microcosm of Bengali culture in New Delhi.Our own Bose family has been resident in Delhi for a very long time, originally residing in Kashmere Gate and later moving to CR Park.
