In the exhibition "Oltre Terra. Why Wool Matters" the multidisciplinary design studio Formafantasma investigates the history, ecology and global dynamics of the extraction and production of wool. A wide range of artworks, agricultural and cultural objects, photographs, videos, and other materials shows how wool is more than simply a raw material for the design and textile industries. The domestic sheep as we know them today evolved over the course of hundreds of years. Humans gave sheep food and protection from predators and got wool in return - a material with magical properties that profoundly altered the course of both human and animal history. The wider installation of Oltre Terra is a critical take on the display mode of the diorama. Commonly used in natural history museums to represent a static scene from nature, here the diorama is exploded into an installation that contains six life-size reproductions of different sheep breeds, a carpet made from discarded wool fibers, as well as documents, films, by-products of manufacturing processes and various types of organic matter. The aim for this book is for it to become a reference in the ongoing debate about spaces of learning and education: it presents contributions from experts in the relevant fields, along with the research underlying the project, select case studies and testimony of the iterations of this initiative in France, Portugal and Belgium. It cements the optimistic view shared by the project's participants over the years: the believe that public education is a foundation of contemporary Europe, and that the right architectural and design solutions really can enhance and multiply its power.

Broncia Koller-Pinell war wie nur wenige Künstlerinnen im internationalen Ausstellungsbetrieb der Wiener Moderne präsent. Bereits mit 27 Jahren zeigte sie Bilder im Wiener Künstlerhaus. Ihre größten Erfolge feierte sie in der von Gustav Klimt gegründeten Kunstschaugruppe. Mithilfe der Einbeziehung des künstlerischen Umfelds von Broncia Koller-Pinell lässt sich ihre stilistische Entwicklung vom Impressionismus der Münchner Schule des späten 19. Jahrhunderts bis zu den neusachlichen Tendenzen der 1920er-Jahre nachvollziehen. Anfang 2014 schenkte mir mein Vater eine Polaroid-Kamera, die schon seit Jahren ungenutzt in seinem Büro herumlag und eigentlich weggeworfen werden sollte. Die Polaroid Macro 5 war ursprünglich für die Zahn- und Tatortfotografie gedacht, aber meine eigene Verwendung für das klobige Gerät war zunächst unklar. Im Laufe der nächsten Monate kristallisierte sich durch Experimentieren und Ausprobieren nach und nach eine mögliche Verwendung heraus. Die Kamera erwies sich schnell als fähig, ein Gefühl einzufangen, das in einigen meiner (damals) früheren Bilder vorhanden war, die ich am meisten mochte, die ich aber nicht ohne weiteres nachstellen konnte. Die früheren Bilder hielten gewöhnliche Materialien oder Motive fest, aber die Bilder wirkten schwer fassbar und abstrakt - verwandelt durch die Inszenierung, den Rahmen und den Prozess des Fotografierens.

an Flavin began work with fluorescent light tubes from the early 1960s on; arranged in so-called 'situations', he would then further develop them into series and large-scale installations. The colours and dimensions of the materials he used were prescribed by industrial production. Flooded in light, viewers themselves become part of the works: The space, along with the objects within it, are set in relation to each other and thus become immersive experiences of art triggering sensual, almost spiritual experiences. Flavin liberated colour from the two-dimensionality of painting. Gonzalez-Foerster works experimentally. Engaging with the exhibition as a medium, her spatial inventions and investigations probe the notion of display, as well as how an image or scene is experienced. Drawing on wide-ranging references from music, literature, film, architecture and pop culture, the artist creates densely layered environments with the ability to transport viewers into alternative narrative, temporal and psychological dimensions.Alienarium 5 is a speculative environment that invites us to imagine possible encounters with extraterrestrials. The catalogue is a culmination of her decades-long interest in science fiction and continued research into deep space and alien life. Starting from found thermal camera recordings, the filmmaker and artist Stefan Kruse (b. 1987) made his experimental, essayistic documentary film A Lack of Clarity (2020). This book, titled after the film, transposes Kruse's dream-like documentary from screen to page. The resequencing of film stills and subtitles presents an alternate view into the social control mechanisms and evolving digital technologies that face an expanding field of what is visible (and controllable) in the contemporary city. A Lack of Clarity, designed and edited in close collaboration with Kruse, includes 200+ stills from the film, as well as essays by Volker Pantenburg and Rémi Lauvin.

Anna Titova and Stanislav Shuripa founded Agency of Singular Investigations (ASI) in 2014 to take a stand on the dramatic changes in Russia's political reality and cultural atmosphere and to respond to the advent of the postfactual age by thinking about alternative ways of harnessing images and means of communication for the construction of identities and worldviews.The publication's core is an extensive conversation between the artists and the curator Maria Lind about the political situation, the power and function of language, artistic strategies, and their exhibition On New Thinking and Other Forgotten Dreams at the Secession. The dustcover is an intervention by the artists and refers to two works in the exhibition. The handmade cutout shows a young woman who appears to be dancing; in reality, she was brutally arrested by police at an antiwar protest in Moscow in 2022. In the diagram Lavender Mist of History (2023), the artists sketch a web of events that illustrates the history of decline and sclerosis in Russia over the past several decades.

The book to be released in conjunction with Tishan Hsu's exhibition recent work 2023 contains an essay by Laura Brown that reconstructs the creative techniques he has devised and honed over the past four decades and turns the spotlight on the early 2000s as a watershed moment when digital image editing programs suddenly produced within seconds many of the effects Hsu had anticipated. In a conversation with Martha Schwendener, Hsu dwells on the early years of his career and discusses his great theme: the fusion of body and technology in an increasingly virtual world.As a creative intervention, Hsu has produced a mutating series of eight title images for the downloadable version of the book. The printed dust cover, which exists only in the analog version, features all eight motifs, like a preprinted sleeve for collectible cards, complete with the exact period during which they can be downloaded from the web.

Charlie Prodger works across moving image, writing, sculpture, drawing and printmaking. Through the prism of queer subjectivity, her work explores intertwined relations between the body, landscape, language, technology and time. To accompany her exhibition and the presentation of the complete film trilogy-Stoneymollan Trail, BRIDGIT, and SaF05-a book with a substantial essay by Sarah Hayden is released in Secession's publication series. The London-based author and professor of literature and visual culture analyzes the significance of voice and voiceover in Prodger's video works. For the book, the artist has created a series of image pairings of production photos and video stills from the final part of the trilogy, SaF05.

Movement Notation is considered the first publication of the "Eshkol-Wachman Movement Notation" (EWMN), developed by Noa Eshkol and Abraham Wachmann. With this polyphonic notation system, Eshkol and Wachmann centered dance on its basic element: the movement of the human body. They treated the different parts of the body as separate instruments, similar to the musical instruments of an orchestra - each with its own rules for performing movement. This new edition of the 1958 publication is supplemented with contributions from Eshkol's collaborators and additional archive material, which contextualizes and expands on the genesis of the EWMN and embeds it in contemporary discourses on dance and movement.Ed.: Krist Gruijthuijsen. Grace Weaver spends July to September 2022 in Morocco. She is not only curious to retrace what Matisse, Bacon und Beckett experienced but also to explore the foreign impacts on her artistic work. A brilliant series of 105 collages comes into being, created during all stages of the trip and drawn only with scissors. The collages present women, each seen in her own way and equally interwoven with her ornamental surroundings. Glued into one, traditional Moroccan patterns and ornaments blend with Western brand names and logos, Arabic writing clashes with colonial French and English. This decorative trait defines the spaces, in which Weaver's women reside. The scissors, in turn, transform everything into an ornament. Tremulations präsentiert Objekte aus dem Archiv des Swedenborg-Hauses sowie Schriften und Kunstwerke u.a. von Marcel Duchamp, Meret Oppenheim, Yayoi Kusama und Apichatpong Weerasethakul. Die Publikation stellt die Orthodoxien des institutionellen Kuratierens in Frage und nimmt dabei wenig Rücksicht auf die traditionellen Formen der Kategorisierung der Welt. Sie kombiniert Elemente aus dem Archiv des Swedenborg-Hauses, darunter die Ohrknochen des Mystikers Emanuel Swedenborg, mit Werken der modernen und zeitgenössischen Kunst und Literatur. Der Katalog ist nach Swedenborgs "Neun Regeln der Tremulation" gegliedert und wird in Kapiteln unterteilt, die sich im physischen, zeitlichen und virtuellen Raum des Swedenborg-Hauses manifestieren. Dieses bemerkenswerte Projekt war eine Initiative von vier Sammlern aus Wien, die in einer ehemaligen Galerie im Zentrum Wiens aus ihren Beständen sehr persönlich ihre eigene Franz West-Ausstellung organisierten. Mit über 400 Werken aus allen Werkgruppen des Künstlers entstand die bisher umfassendste Einzelausstellung des Künstlers, die es je gab. Die Ausstellung, die ursprünglich nur für den privaten Rahmen gedacht war, musste wegen den zahlreichen Medienberichten, dem großen Interesse aller Franz West-Fans und der Neugierde der Passanten der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich gemacht werden. Der unmittelbare Zugang zu den Werken war im Gegensatz zu Museen erlaubt und gewollt. Alle Sofas, Liegen und Sessel konnten benutzt werden. Die Passstücke durften unter Aufsicht verwendet werden.
