“The universe, seen with a clear vision, shows God in everything. For me, I felt God’s presence in the star that shone above the calm sea. Knowing that He was with me, there was nothing to fear, after having gone through so many events that nearly took my life. God had bestowed upon me with fearless courage and hope.I share with you a message in my memoir: what I had to go through in my life did not just happen to one particular individual; rather, everyone is given the same opportunity to find God in his or her life in one way or another. I hope that you do not miss any life-changing opportunities that are presented to you as you go through your life. God never gives us suffering that we cannot endure. He has already given us the wisdom to survive the difficulties we face in our lives.War is one type of conflict that we face in the world. Just as I was able to survive through the atrocities of war with wisdom and courage from Him, I hope you can rely on God-given strength to resolve the conflicts you encounter in your life and find hope for tomorrow.Even in my eighties, I feel I still have more work to do in my devotion to Him. Still, despite my shortcomings, I humbly beseech the readers to recognize His Grace from the lessons I have learned so far.”

This book is about many things, things like politics, war, society, history, power, and even love. But most of all it is about what it means to be human in a deeply troubled world. You may think this is too ambitious a goal for such a little book. And you may be right. But then again, what goal was ever achieved without reaching for it? Besides, in this age of giant fart storms what harm can there be in having a little book burst a few bubbles? So my friend, I invite you to join Don Quixote and I in our quest for the truth. Who knows? You may even find some truths of your own. Part I - The World: Lacking coherence - that balance that gives weight to the meaning of things - the world forces us to go deeper into the meaning of things or risk becoming labels in the shallow waters of discord. Part II - America: America is adrift in a sea of euphemisms. Ambiguities cloud the agenda, and answers multiply like rabbits. Solving this riddle won't be easy, but it has to begin with a language that resonates more than it agitates. Part III - Life: What has happened to the meaning of life? Is it nothing more than a time-clock that keeps ticking away until our shelf-life expires? Of course not - don't be silly - only our minds fell asleep. So welcome back my friend to the gauntlet of life. Part IV - Three Miscellaneous Pieces: These poems are meant for everyone. Let the poems speak for themselves and you will find in them the simple images that contemplate the innumerable pleasures of life. Having been born in a rooming house in Detroit in 1937, it was no wonder that I would learn that life could be equally beautiful or equally horrible. A contradiction that created in me an insatiable desire to learn more about the world around me. So I became a social worker - something that put me directly in the line of fire of what it meant to be human. Then came the family - that journey of unfathomable problems and exorbitant beauty. Finally, there is you my dear reader, who is at the end of dreams and the beginning of reality.
Mosts mall tightly-knit Midwestern towns don't deal well with change, and Bent River is no exception. When an arrogant unknown developer acquires a valuable tract of agricultural ground next to the city-owned lake, they don't exactly throw down the welcome mat. Then, he has the audacity to propose a considerable condominium golf course complex, immediately erupting the good people of Bent River into a firestorm of controversy. They can approve major growth in their little community or choose to stay the same in order to maintain the small town heritage they love. Local carpenter, Mayor Jack Cooper, is all for new property taxes and especially a new tournament player's golf course, but only if his constituents give it their blessing. It would put them on the map as a destination and help bring new prosperity to a floundering economy, but at what cost? Jack knows they need change, but his gut tells him their auspicious new benefactor has something to hide. Considering the drama, violence, tragedy, and romance, you have to ask yourself, "Is this our little town?" There is no doubt David is a genuine Heartlander through and through. Growing up in the Midwest he learned early on the value of a good work ethic and a hard day's work. His passion for pounding nails and being creative led him to building over two hundred homes in and around central Iowa for the last thirty years. If you don't catch him on a job site somewhere he can usually be found on the golf course, pounding a defenseless golf ball around with his buddies. David loves to write about his small town experiences and continues to live with his wife in central Iowa.
Life drawing has been a staple of the art world since our ancestors drew figures of hunters on cave walls. The Egyptians, Greeks and Romans created beautiful works of art using nude models, not to mention the works the "Great Masters." Nude drawings can also provide an interesting basis for drawing clothed or draped figures. This books gives you an opportunity to study some of the sketches of a skilled artist completed during actual life drawing sessions. It contains 39 drawings of real nude models. Most sketches were completed within a ten to twenty minute time frame using graphite or ballpoint pens. The contour lines provide a reference for the locations of shadows since the short time frame does not allow for the finished drawing. The resulting picture is similar to a paint by the number painting.

On the summer evening of Wednesday, June 7, 1865, just two months after the end of the Civil War, seventy-one-year-old local farmer and weaver Polly Paul and her seventeen-year-old apprentice Cassie Munday were brutally slain in cold blood at the Paul farm outside Summerhill, Pennsylvania. The gruesome scene shocked neighbors and townspeople alike, striking fear into the community and begging the question, "Who could have done such a thing?" In Time: The Killing of Polly Paul follows the murder and aftermath of the slaying of these two women, leading to a widely covered public trial, a sort of O.J. Simpson trial of its day. The hunt is on for the killers, and as some men are apprehended, Cambria County District Attorney Philip S. Noon worries if the correct perpetrators have been found. Will justice be served? Author Paul Petrunak, Jr. brings readers along on the case, using courtroom testimony, newspaper articles, eyewitness accounts, and other records from the timeline, compiled over ten years of thorough research. For fans of true crime mysteries, In Time: The Killing of Polly Paul ignites the detective in all of us, following the trail of evidence along with the prosecutors from the time the women are discovered to the final conclusion of events. Paul Petrunak, Jr. became acquainted with Polly Paul and Cassie Munday's story when he stumbled across an old newspaper article while helping some friends research their house's history. Shocked that he had never heard of this tragedy that occurred in his local area of Cambria County, Paul began his ten-year study of the events that took place that fateful night and the criminal proceedings that followed. Paul believes the two women reached out to him to tell their story through various occurrences over the years and that it is time to bring these women's story to light. Like everything else, the truth comes out in time.

In The Times of My Life, The Reverend James R. Squire provides us with the story of his life; a trove of lessons learned from 45 years as priest, counselor, and teacher; and an opportunity to reflect on the reader’s own life. Squire taught ethics for 38 years. He called it “full-contact ethics”, for once a student entered the room they might be asked to engage in a number of individual and interpersonal, real-world ethical challenges. This book is a “full-contact memoir”. It will immediately get you thinking about your core values, your faith, the current state of your relationships, and the grit and strength you need to move forward. Some parts of it will be difficult to read. Some parts may make you laugh out loud. One of Squire’s classmates in first through twelfth grade in public school, David Spence, wrote the following:“[This is an] entertaining and engaging read that is full of wit and wisdom, sorrow and joy, but most of all a chronicle of a life well lived and what it should mean to be human. Those of a certain age will be reminded, for better or worse, what it was like to grow up in the 50’s and 60’s in working-class America. Those of any age will find much food for thought. Socrates is supposed to have said, ‘The unexamined life is not worth living’. This memoir is an invitation to begin the examination in hope of learning how we make our lives richer when we strive to enrich the lives of others.”
