1814Ashore on leave, Captain Sir Thomas Kydd learns of a dismal harvest and general hardship among the population. In Germany, Napoleon Bonaparte is celebrating victories that once again make his name feared throughout Europe. An armistice is signed and while the Allies lick their wounds Bonaparte sets to preparing for a grand advance. And, in a fragile peace, and saddled with huge war debts, the government has no choice but to place HMS Thunderer, along with many other Royal Navy ships, in reserve, until the Navy can decide what to do with their great fleets. Meanwhile, Kydd is offered an admiral's flag but this is the West Africa station and the anti-slavery operations set in fever-ridden swamps. Despite the obvious dangers and hardships, Kydd sees this as the realisation of his life's ambition and readies for sea in his beloved Thunderer as his flagship. In a turn of the tide Bonaparte is defeated by the Allies and exiled to the tiny island of Elba. Then electrifying news breaks out - the tyrant has escaped and is marching on Paris, the citizens flocking to join him. The British government as well is rocked by a realisation that Napoleon's invasion fleet is still in being and if the French navy declares for him they can sail from the ports now free of blockade and make the invasion of England a reality. The Channel Fleet has been stood down, its ships in various stages of repair, its commander on leave in the country. There's one man in active service who happens to be on the spot - Admiral Sir Thomas Kydd. With frantic haste he's appointed temporary commander-in-chief to sail with all the men-o'-war that can be scraped together to stand athwart the French. Kydd knows this will probably mean the sacrifice of not only his ships but himself and his men. He calls on subterfuge and daring to flaunt defiance and resolution until the Battle of Waterloo settles the matter. Then, he has the satisfaction of seeing Napoleon Bonaparte carried off to St Helena, from whence he can never return.

So many people struggle silently with feeling good enough and going above and beyond their limits in order to achieve "perfection". They're successful at work and in their personal lives, but this comes at a significant emotional, mental, and sometimes physical toll. They want an escape, they want permission to stop, slow down, or have things be somewhat easier, but they're scared to make change because they're not sure what that looks like or the implication on their careers, relationships, and personal identity."Who am I outside of my accomplishments"?"Who am I outside of being someone who does things for other people?""Who am I if I'm not always working or doing something?" This book will provide the social and cultural context for how these tendencies towards perfectionism emerge. By having a better sense of why we have bought into a narrative of "more is better" and perpetual optimization and doing better, people can start to re-align how they want to live. Written by an Asian American therapist who has lived experience with managing her own perfectionism, this blend of advice and perspective will help come up with their own solutions to problematic perfectionistic tendencies and gain a better understanding of how they want to make values-driven decisions in their lives.

China dominates manufacturing and is the world's largest retail market, but for companies outside of China, finding ways to do business in the country is increasingly uncertain in the face of rising US-China tension, combined with China's crackdowns on the tech and education sectors.Shaun Rein runs the China Market Research Group and has spent his career helping multinationals understand where the opportunities are in China. An American who's lived in Shanghai for 25 years, he has long been one of the biggest China bulls. He now argues that while China is not a must-go destination for all companies and investors, there are still many non-politically sensitive sectors where long-term opportunities can be sought. The Split analysis the geo-political split between the US and China, China's sharp turn towards socialism and how this will cut into fat margins in many sectors. It explains why corporations in sectors such as semiconductors and AI should stay clear of China and relocate to other countries like Vietnam, India and Mexico. Yet principally, Rein makes the case that that fears about China's shift are far overblown and that for most sectors it should remain the main growth driver for even the largest companies. Expert insights into China's national policy reforms, its rising middle class seeking to save and invest, and their focus on health and wellness, will inform the international strategic decisions for companies around the world in sectors such as finance, consumer goods and auto.China will soon eclipse the United States as the world's largest economy and companies will lose out if they do not know how to invest in China properly. No company has been able to get into China for 3 years. Shaun Rein hasn't left. He's therefore uniquely positioned to advise now that China is opening up again. The Split presents a unique and informed case for why the time is definitely now to capitalize on policy changes and trends in China that will support long-term opportunities for your business.
'When Dan died, there was so much I wished I'd known. I'll never know whether knowing any of the things I didn't know, or doing any of the things I didn't do, would have been enough to keep Dan safe in that moment of decision, but if in reading this book my gaps are filled for you, and a difference is made for your children, then that will be more than good enough for me.'When Daniel Spargo-Mabbs was 16, he went to a party and never came home. The party was an illegal rave and Daniel - a bright, popular, big-hearted prom king - died from a fatally strong overdose of MDMA.I Wish I'd Known is the book Dan's mother Fiona - co-founder of the leading drug education charity the Daniel Spargo-Mabbs Foundation - wishes she'd had as her intelligent, inquisitive child entered his teenage years. Because however you parent, and whatever you do, your child is very likely to be at some time or other in a situation where they have to make a decision about drugs. What if that decision is 'yes'? Do they know what the risks are? Do they have practical strategies they can bring to bear if things go wrong?Use of illegal drugs is on the rise among teenagers, and accessing advice and support to help navigate this landscape is critical not just for them, but for you as a parent. I Wish I'd Known explores the risks and effects of the substances young people are most likely to encounter, and the legal pitfalls that may leave their own lasting legacy. It explains the way the adolescent brain makes decisions and manages risk, and gives insight into how to manage important conversations through these often tricky years. There are practical strategies for staying safe, information on reducing harm, and 'talking points' providing ideas for things to do, to talk about, look at, look up or consider.Throughout the book, Daniel's story - his life, his death, and what happened afterwards - not only provides a compelling reminder of the importance of those conversations, but also serves as a beautiful, unforgettable eulogy to a son, brother, boyfriend and friend whose life continues to touch, and perhaps even save, those of other young people.

The conversation around menopause has opened up; most of us understand what it means to go through the menopause, how it affects health and wellbeing and what we can do to manage difficult symptoms.BUT. Do we really know why menopause matters? Estrogen levels drop - so what? Periods get heavier - so what? It matters because estrogen protects heart health and if levels drop dramatically, women are at greater risk of a cardiac event. And heavy periods are not trivial if, for example, you're a primary school teacher who can't just abandon your children mid-lesson to deal with flooding, or a police officer who can't access a toilet to change sanitary protection. Women in these situations - women like you; your mother; your sister; your friend; your partner - often just give up. On work, on their careers, on their health. And this isn't even taking into account those who can't access any healthcare support to take HRT, or enter a conversation in which that might become a possibility. Diane Danzebrink was one of the first people to take up the fight to have menopause recognized and covered on the school PSHE curriculum and her campaigns have been critical to the way in which menopause is no longer seen as a shameful or trivial experience. Her book Making Menopause Matter reminds us not only of what menopause is - of the scope, nature and impact of symptoms and of how we can manage them - but also why it is important that we continue to campaign for access to support, enhanced understanding and an acceptance that it is not a seamless transition for many. Diane's wise, compassionate writing offers practical advice on symptoms along with deeper insights into how we can better support those whose lives are hugely impacted by their menopause. Part manifesto, a little memoir, plenty of self-help and ultimately a call to arms for society, public health and individuals alike, Making Menopause Matter should be required reading for all.

"With an emphasis on understanding where the foulest words in the English language came from--and the disgusting and hilarious histories behind them--this book demonstrates the true filth of our everyday words. But this book is more than just a list of vulgar words and salacious slang. It's a thoughtful analysis of why we deem words as being inappropriate as well as revealing 'good words' that have surprisingly naughty origins"--
The largely underappreciated - and often hidden - history of Jewish involvement in English football.
