The December 7, 1941, attack on Pearl Harbor was a seminal event for both America and Hawaii. For the United States, it ushered in World War II in both Asia and Europe. For Hawaii, the islands became a military staging ground for the war in the Pacific, and the transition from a territory to a state began. The Honolulu Star-Advertiser provided in-depth coverage of the seventy-fifth anniversary in 2016, which included a massive, eighty-eight-page commemorative edition, Day of Infamy: December 7, 1941, The Shocking Attack that Plunged America into World War II. Among the many stories were first-person accounts from civilians who witnessed the attack as well as service members who engaged the enemy and lived to tell about it. The Star-Advertiser decided to publish it, with additional material, as a book. There are many accounts and narratives of December 7, 1941, but none captures the day in photographic detail as does Remember Pearl Harbor. There are over 270 photos from the National Park Service, Hawaii military museums, state and national collections, and the archives of the Star-Advertiser. Special fold-out pages show the lead-up to the attack, the formations of both Japanese and U.S. warplanes and ships, elaborate maps, and a visual salute to the fallen.

How far is six feet apart? Too far to hold hands. Too far to give hugs. Too far to share snacks. But it's not too far to share a laugh, trade a smile, or make a wish. Author Beverly da Silva wrote Six Feet Together to help kids understand that the simple things that will keep us as healthy and safe as possible"€"social distance, wear a mask, wash your hands"€"will still allow us to do the things that matter most. It's important to talk with kids about this new normal and explain how it shows we care about protecting ourselves, our family, and our community. Especially in Hawai'i where we naturally m lama kekahi i kekahi (take care of one another), our keiki will see that the more all of us do these things, the sooner we'll be back to holding hands, giving hugs, and sharing snacks.

There is a saying that women hold up half the sky. This cannot be more true than in Hawai'i whose very creation myth states that the very first human created was a woman known as La'ila'i. In fact, the formation of the Hawaiian Islands is attributed to the goddess Pele and her digging of the fire pits that led to the birth of the Island chain. Her sister goddesses were similarly powerful in brave rescues and battling demons. It takes no stretch of imagination to say that Hawaiian culture recognizes and venerates a woman's power, passion, and intellectual prowess. This book is a celebration of inspiring women who have contributed to the growth and development of the Aloha State determined by their spheres of influence, dedication, and commitment to their craft, industries, and the Hawaiian community. All of them have demonstrated their ability to rise above the ordinary and push the margins as frontier. Our featured list of Inspiring Women include Marleen Akau, Puanani Burgess, Christine Camp, Shirley Daniel, Leanne Ferrer, Raiatea Helm, Mazie Hirono, Maxine Hong Kingston, Isabella Ellaheh Hughes, Kathryn Whang Inouye, Kim Coco Iwamoto, Connie Lau, Lynette Lo Tom, Lauren Matsumoto, Mary Philpotts McGrath, Catherine Ngo, Kymberly Marcos Pine, Crystal K. Rose, Maya Soetoro-Ng, Jennifer Sabas, Ligaya Stice, Karen Tan, Lois-Ann Yamanaka, and Lee Anne Wong.

Brief, illustrated history of the pineapple industry on Maui"€"a condensed version of Pineapple Century by Jan TenBruggencate. Pineapple's succulent combination of sweet, tart and fragrant has entranced folks for decades. For more than a century, Maui was the heart of the Hawaiian pineapple industry. The crowned fruit graced thousands of acres on the slopes of Haleakal, west and central Moloka'i and gentle hills of L na'i, the Pineapple Isle. Maui Pineapple: Golden Legacy of the Crowned Fruit reviews the storied history of pineapple on Maui, from its beginnings in the 1840s, when thousands of fresh fruit went by clipper ship to California, to Hawaiian pineapple's glory days of the early 1900s, and finally through the industrys contraction due to international competition. Today, fresh Maui pineapple is still available, and as lip-smacking tasty as ever. Jan TenBruggencate is a prize-winning writer and author of more than a dozen books set in Hawai'i. He was raised in a pineapple plantation town on Molokai, the son of a pineapple researcher.
