This is a children's book with appeal for all ages. The title is the invitation and each page is a response that rhymes with an animal somehow connected to Maine. The book is designed to work on multiple levels. The young (and all ages) can enjoy the play on words and alliteration. The older reader can appreciate the limited text that provides facts about each animal in the context of Maine. All ages can appreciate the alluring artwork that celebrates diversity and a fanciful approach to anthropomorphic animals and environmental awareness. The author and artist are neighbors in Little Falls, Cumberland County, Maine.

"When we are in the right place at the right time with the right gear, a Hex hatch can be one of the most exciting experiences in fly fishing. The author's own excitement comes through loud and clear in this thorough and entertaining guide to the Hex hatch in Northern New England. Wass writes in a friendly, chatty, and light-hearted conversational style. He explains where to go and how to prepare for the challenges of fishing at or after dark. I've marked my calendar to get out there and put his advice to work." --David Van Wie, author of Storied Waters and The Confluence.

The focus of this book is the flowers found growing in the woods, fields, roadsides, and beaches of the islands of Casco Bay, Maine. Because my summer home is on Chebeague Island, most of the species recorded here were observed on Chebeague, and most specific place names refer to Chebeague. However, the flora of the islands of Casco Bay (and surrounding mainland) is all very similar; so, this book can be a guide to the wildflowers of the region. I wrote these pages primarily for myself, because I wanted to learn the wildflowers on Chebeague, but I also want to share them with anyone who may enjoy these plants. The species included here are mostly wildflowers although there are some quirky ones, like sheep sorrel (a horrible garden weed) and bittersweet (our worst invasive). Some may not consider these flowers; but of course they are, they're flowering plants. There are also some species here that are probably escaped ornamentals (e.g. foxglove and meadow pink), and so are not strictly "wild" flowers, but they are certainly pretty and worth including. The flowers are arranged by month and within each month by color. The monthly arrangement gives a sense of the progression of the seasons from spring through fall. The arrangement by color is to help with identification. Designating a species to a particular month is somewhat arbitrary (should a flower first seen on May 31 be included in May or June?) and, depending on the weather in a given year, flowering times can be shifted by a week or more. Many species flower over several months (dandelions, clovers and hawkweeds, for example), but all of them have a period where flowering is most intense and this is where I have placed them. Arranging plants by flower color also has difficulties because some of the color distinctions are blurry - is a flower purple or is it more red or blue? I have grouped together red with pink and purple with blue.

Several years ago, I started sending my grandsons a daily email for the sole purpose of letting them know I was thinking of them and loved them. The email closed with the above. It was important to me they be reminded of their heritage and a Yiddish closing was the way to do it. Zayde had died but he was still very much alive in our hearts and I saw no reason to stop sending them his love. After a while, in addition to the daily greeting, I started sending a Yiddish word or phrase with pronunciation and definition. I told a few people about the daily Yiddish and they, too, wanted a dose. They told their friends and their friends wanted Yiddish. A "class" was born and as of this writing (June 2020), there are 52 getting a daily dose of Yiddish. Many are not Jewish and I do not know everyone; however, everyone takes it seriously and will sometimes ask if I have a Yiddish word for something on their minds. "Zei gezunt und zei mir frailich, mein kinderlach. Be well and be happy, my children," ends the daily dose of Yiddish.

a t "What cannot be underestimated is Henry David Thoreau's role in the conservation of the Maine woods and in conservation thought in general. Both went far beyond his life and the confines of his native Concord. Writing in the mid-1800s, he was one of the first to describe the wild nature of these woods in terms of their emotional and ethical relationships within a conservation context. It is not entirely by chance that a considerable amount of land surrounding the roughly 200 miles that his three trips covered through the wildest part of the Maine woods has ended up with some kind of conservation protection. Thoreau brought attention to these woods through his book, The Maine Woods, published in 1864, and that attention found its way into the minds of many of those who spearheaded efforts to save some measure of their wildness. Dean Bennett began in the early 1960s to follow Thoreau's journeys into the wilderness of the Maine woods. Since then he has discovered more than fifty significant places, natural features, and elements of wilderness along Thoreau's routes, which, in most cases, Thoreau noted. These Bennett recorded with photographs, drawings, paintings, and digital art." t be underestimated is Henry David Thoreau's role in the conservation of the Maine woods and in conservation thought in general. Peter Kilgore spent most of his life in Falmouth and Portland, Maine. His poetry, collected for the first time here in Quarry, appeared in literary magazines and small press books from the 1970s through the time of his death in 1992. Reflected in it is his deep reverence for Maine's natural world, his family, his hometown, and in particular his powerful relationship to the sea and Long Island in Casco Bay. The taut, crystalline lines and imagery in Peter's poetry shine with the unique vitality of Maine people and places.

The story of Waterville and its surrounds is one of astonishingly rapid growth and prosperity. The city flourished on the wave of the Second Industrial Revolution. Its ever-multiplying mills drew workers from around the world, and its streets were filled with merchants of every kind. The boom, of course, could not last, and before the end of the 20th century Waterville had barely anything to do with the water at all. The once-thriving industries were all gone, and the proud river city, like so many others in the north, began a long struggle to reinvent itself and recover its missing pride.
