This Liber Amicorum was composed in honor of our dear colleague and former Dean of University College Tilburg, Prof. Dr. Alkeline van Lenning, who took emeritus status in March 2023 after an academic career of over forty years at Tilburg University. Alkeline van Lenning was professor of multi-disciplinary education and has expertise in the field of character education, interdisciplinary teaching in higher education, feminist theory, and gender. Close colleagues and friends were invited to share their ideas on educational utopias in higher education as a way to render Alkeline van Lenning a well-deserved tribute

This volume contains the proceedings of the Second International Workshop on Automatic Translation for Sign and Spoken Languages (AT4SSL 2023), hosted by the 24th Annual Con- ference of The European Association for Machine Translation (EAMT 2023). This workshop is a venue for presenting and discussing (complete, ongoing or future) research on automatic translation between sign and spoken languages.

This volume contains the proceedings of the First International Workshop on Gender-Inclusive Translation Technologies (GITT-2023)1, hosted by the 24th Annual Conference of The European Association for Machine Translation (EAMT 2023). GITT is set out to focus on genderinclusive language in translation and cross-lingual scenarios. The workshop brings together researchers from diverse areas, including industry partners, MT practitioners and language professionals. Also, GITT aims to encourage multidisciplinary research that develops and interrogates both solutions and challenges for addressing bias and promoting gender inclusivity in MT and translation tools.

Cruciaal is de vraag naar de voorwaarden waaronder instituties invloed mogen uitoefenen op de natuurlijke sociale vrijheden en verantwoordelijkheden van de menselijke persoon en zijn sociale verbanden. De probleemstelling van dit proefschrift spitst zich toe op de vraag hoe in een tijd van globalisering, digitalisering en klimaatverandering het subsidiariteitsbeginsel functioneel kan zijn voor goed bestuur in de complexe gelaagdheid van de politieke economie

Het beschrijft het wat en waarom van publieke inkoop en geeft professionals en studenten in het hoger onderwijs inzicht in hoe op een moderne manier ingekocht kan worden in de publieke sector. Centraal staat hoe publieke organisaties via de inkoop van werken, leveringen of diensten op een verantwoorde manier publieke waarde kunnen creëren en behouden.Geschreven door zes jonge en vooruitstrevende wetenschappers uit verschillende vakgebieden, geeft het boek een integrale blik op publieke inkoop ten tijde van grote maatschappelijke veranderingen. Het boek start met het bespreken van het publieke inkoopproces, het begrip publieke waarde, de juridische context en de organisatie van de inkoopfunctie in publieke organisaties. Vervolgens komt het ontwikkelen en vertalen van het inkoopbeleid aan bod, het organiseren van aanbestedingen en de selectie van leveranciers.

Unfortunately, labour law is very seldom on the bookshelves of the workers in Europe. It certainly is on the desks of trade union officials, of HRM staff of the enterprises and of lawyers and judges, but that is French, German, Polish, etc. labour law. European Labour Law is hardly known even among labour law experts. That is of no great matter as much of the labour law of Europe is, like a sponge absorbs the water, implemented in domestic law. Sometimes, however, one needs to trace the European origins of domestic laws, for example when there are doubts whether domestic law is fully in accordance with European law.This book has the ambition to put the reader wise about the European origins on Labour Law. It is the fruit of lectures that Prof. Antoine Jacobs has given (2012-2019) as visiting professor at the State University of Milano.

Technology and Regulation (TechReg) is an international journal of law, technology and society, with an interdisciplinary identity. TechReg provides an online platform for disseminating original research on the legal and regulatory challenges posed by existing and emerging technologies (and their applications) including, but by no means limited to, the Internet and digital technology, artificial intelligence and machine learning, robotics, neurotechnology, nanotechnology, biotechnology, energy and climate change technology, and health and food technology. We conceive of regulation broadly to encompass ways of dealing with, ordering and understanding technologies and their consequences, such as through legal regulation, competition, social norms and standards, and technology design (or in Lessig¿s terms: law, market, norms and architecture).

An open educational and open-ended resource for whomever is interested in philosophical thinking. In this scholarly handbook you find two kinds of chapters. First, there are chapters that provide a broad introduction into a specific philosophical subdiscipline, such as political philosophy, epistemology or metaphysics. As this collection covers most of the sub-disciplines currently taught at Western philosophy departments, you can legitimately claim that you have been introduced to Western ¿philosophy¿ as a whole, understood rather canonically, after having read the entire handbook. Second, there are chapters that introduce slightly more specific topics or philosophical approaches.The open-ended nature of this handbook, means that new chapters will be added in the future. We hope that philosophy will change and grow with time to become more diverse and inclusive and that this handbook will do so as well. We think of philosophy and its evolution as an organic process, as a tree that branches out in many different directions, adding new directions as it goes along.

Johan Huizingäs theory of play as set out in his Homo Ludens encouraged many other scholars all over the world to reflect upon play and games in culture. The wish to get an overview of this productive reception is the drive behind this open bibliography (open, because reflection on Huizinga is ongoing and updates will be welcomed in next editions). The compiler is Léon Hanssen, an eminent Dutch cultural historian and writer. Hanssen wrote a dissertation on Johan Huizinga (Huizinga en de troost van de geschiedenis, 1996), several monographs on cultural history, and comprehensive biographies of Piet Mondriaan and Menno ter Braak.

This book on Reflections on European Values is a Liber Amicorum honouring Loek Halman's contribution to the European Values Study. For years, he has been a key figure in this longitudinal and cross-national research project on moral, social, and political values, dedicating his academic life to advancing the understanding of values in Europe. This Liber Amicorum is published at the occasion of Loek's retirement after a long career at the Department of Sociology at Tilburg University. It brings together essays on the study of European values, written by his academic friends. The 32 chapters in this volume are structured in five themes that reflect Loek's scholarly interest. A first group of contributions presents theoretical and methodological reflections on the European Values Study. Second, essays on the sociology of religion reflect Loek's interest in this topic. Third, comparative studies using the European Values Study are presented. The fourth part focuses on a case most well-known : the Netherlands.
