These proceedings of the Twelfth American Peptide Symposium include 363 articles which were selected for publication on the basis of originality, timeliness and scientific significance. This volume includes contributions on ppetide hormones, neuropeptides, lipid-interactive peptides, peptide and protein conformation, de novo design, structure-activity relationships, synthetic methods, large-scale peptide synthesis, viruses and vaccines, peptide mimetics, peptide inhibitors, immunology and new biologically active peptides.
Going ahead with their plans, the Association for Research on Schizophrenia CARS), the Schizophrenia Research Group of the Institute of Psychiatry of the University of Milan and the Tito and Fanny Legrenzi Foundation organized the International Meeting "Etiopathogenetic Hypotheses of Schizophrenia: The Impact of Epidemiological, Biochemical and Neuromorphological Studies", held in Milan on October 3-4 1986. The Meeting was an excellent occasion for the exchange of information and the sharing of views on the etiological hypotheses of schizophrenia resulting from the latest research in the key areas of epidemiology, biochemistry amd brain imaging. We are very pleased and proud to have had so many of the leading researchers in schizophrenia with us. Their stimulating and friendly presence and their contributions made this Meeting a great success. Aureolus Theophrastus Bombastus von Hohenheim (1493-1541), commonly called Paracelsus, was both one of the most original medical thinkers of the sixteenth century and was the man who made opium (as laudanum), arsenic, copper sulphate, iron, lead, mercury, potassium sulphate, and sulphur part of the pharmacopoeia. A man of many parts, but a pioneer chemist, Paracelsus can be regarded as the originator of a body of work which was the precursor of chemical pharmacology and therapeutics. To no small extent he stands, therefore, as a father figure of the modern pharmaceutical industry. Today's physician who wants to look at that industry since the days of Paracelsus and weigh the great gains against the problems soon encounters difficulties. To diminish them, this Enquiry approaches its subject from historical principles. This gives increased perspective to questions asked late in the boo- these questions being prompted by medical practice outside the industry and some twenty years of drug development activity within it. In antiquity medicines often seem to have been used as part of magic and primitive man thought disease to be due to supernatural forces which he could influence. The legacy remains - and in trying to sort out what is rational in our use of drugs today we have to separate our small bits of science from the ancient magic and from modern commercial pressures and conditioning.
Agriculture is changing rapidly all over the world. Intensification, diversification, optimizing scarce resources, integrated pest management, sustainability and climate change are key issues for agricultural institutes. The best solutions will be found by integrating disciplines. Organized thinking about future farming requires forecasting of the implications of alternative ways to farm and to develop agriculture. Systems thinking and systems simulation are indispensable tools for such integration and extrapolation. About 150 scientists and senior research leaders from all over the world participated in the symposium `Systems Approaches for Agricultural Development' to discuss these issues. The symposium reviewed the status of systems research and modeling in agriculture, with special reference to evaluating their efficacy and efficiency for achieving research goals, and to their application in developing countries, promoted international cooperation in modeling, and increased awareness of systems research and simulation. This book comprises the papers on the technical subjects. Well informed authors describe and illustrate how systems research was used to improve agricultural production systems of all continents and in diverse environments.
During the Conference on Air-Sea Interaction in January 1986, it was suggested to me by David Larner of Reidel Press that it may be timely for an updated compendium of air-sea interaction theory to be organized, developed, and published. Many new results were emerging at the time, i.e., results from the MARSEN, MAS EX, MILDEX, and TOWARD field projects (among others) were in the process of being reported and/or published. Further, a series of new experiments such as FASINEX and HEXOS were soon to be conducted in which new strides in our knowledge of air-sea fluxes would be made. During the year following the discussions with David Larner, it became apparent that many of the advances in air-sea interaction theory during the 1970s and 1980s were associated with sponsor investments in satellite oceanography and, in particular, remote sensing research. Since ocean surface remote sensing, e.g., scatterometry and SAR, requires intimate knowledge of ocean surface dynamics, advances in remote sensing capabilities required coordinated research in air-sea fluxes, wave state, scattering theory, sensor design, and data exploitation using environmental models. Based on this interplay of disciplines, it was decided that this book be devoted to air sea interaction and remote sensing as multi-disciplinary activities.
A text and reference for students and professionals, this volume discusses the causes, distribution, symptoms, and control of the diseases of many of the world's important field crops. It covers approximately1,200 diseases on 25 plants grown throughout the world. Diseases are listed alphabetically by crop name under each type of causal organism, with each disease discussed by causes, distribution, symptoms, and control. Synonyms and common names for each disease are also included to aid in diagnosis.
After several decades of reduced contact, the interaction between physicists and mathematicians in the front-line research of both fields recently became deep and fruit ful again. Many of the leading specialists of both fields became involved in this devel opment. This process even led to the discovery of previously unsuspected connections between various subfields of physics and mathematics. In mathematics this concerns in particular knots von Neumann algebras, Kac-Moody algebras, integrable non-linear partial differential equations, and differential geometry in low dimensions, most im portantly in three and four dimensional spaces. In physics it concerns gravity, string theory, integrable classical and quantum field theories, solitons and the statistical me chanics of surfaces. New discoveries in these fields are made at a rapid pace. This conference brought together active researchers in these areas, reporting their results and discussing with other participants to further develop thoughts in future new directions. The conference was attended by SO participants from 15 nations. These proceedings document the program and the talks at the conference. This conference was preceded by a two-week summer school. Ten lecturers gave extended lectures on related topics. The proceedings of the school will also be published in the NATO-AS[ volume by Plenum. This volume represents a collection of selected papers presented at a symposium of the same name sponsored by the Division of Colloid and Surface Chemistry held at the national Spring meeting of the American Chemical Society in Las Vegas, Nevada, March 29 - April 1, 1982. Also included are invited papers from a number of outstanding overseas liquid crystal scientists who were unable to attend the symposium. The attendance at the symposium itself and the number of papers contained herein is reflective of the high level of current interest in (and maturity of) the field of liquid crystal research. Included in this volume are papers mainly derived from the fields of chemistry and physics ranging in content from the design and synthesis of new meso genic materials to theoretical physical treatments of anisotropic liquids. One of the significant aspects of current liquid crystal research is the increasing col laboration between chemist and phys.icist. The overlap of these two areas has been growing over the last several years and many contri butions to this volume involve a molecular approach to the chemical physics of liquid crystalline materials.
This volume contains the lectures and seminars presented at the NATO Advanced Study Institute on IIAdvances in Laser Spectroscopyll the tenth course of the Europhysics School of Quantum Electronics, held under the supervision of the Quantum Electronics Division of the European Physical Society. The Institute was held at Centro "I Cappuccinill San Miniato, Tuscany, July 26, - August 7, 1981. The Europhysics School of Quantum Electronics was started in 1970 with the aim of providing instruction for young researchers and advanced students already engaged in the area of quantum elec tronics or wishing to switch to this area from a different back ground. From the onset, the School has been under the direction of Prof. F. T. Arecchi, then at the University of Pavia, now at the University of Florence, .and Dr. D. Roess of Siemens, Munich. In 1981, Prof. H. Walther, University of Munich and Max-Planck Institut fUr Quantenoptik joined as director. Each year the Directors choose a subject of particular interest, alternating fundamental topics with technological ones, and ask colleagues specifically competent in a given area to take the scientific responsibility for that course.
The present volume contains the edited transcript of a Totts Gap Colloquium held May 19-21, 1980 sponsored by the Muscular Dystrophy Association. The aim of the colloquium was to bring into focus data relating to cell membranes that might contribute to understanding the pathogenic mechanism of Duchenne muscular dystrophy. A major impediment to progress in understanding the patho genesis of muscular dystrophy has been the failure, so far, to identify the basic genetic defect. Pending the identification of the genetic lesion in Duchenne dystrophy and, in view of scattered but persistent indications of a basic membrane disturbance, it seemed worthwhile to explore in open dialogue the current state of knowledge of membrane morphology and chemistry with an eye to possible leads for further investigation. The participants, drawn from a variety of interested disciplines, attempted to synthesize and reconcile their findings and to identify crucial areas of ignorance in need of exploration. For the most part they avoided specialized jargon and spoke in a language that could be understood by the rest of the group. Apart from providing a review of widely varying approaches to the study of the composition and behavior of cell membranes, the discussions brought together current think~g on strategies and approaches to the study of the pathogenesis of muscular dystrophy. Already the personal contacts made at the colloquium have led to new inter-institutional collabora tive investigations.
