Within the past decades, nostalgia has become a misleadingly familiar concept. Whereas popular nostalgia connotes an idealised memory of the past, nost/algia implies a novelty of approach by focusing on the distinction between ¿nostos¿ (the return) and ¿algos¿ (the pain). Discussed with a reference to the pastoral and the Odyssey, the present study examines certain ¿complex¿ deployments of the mode as applied in several autobiographical narratives of two ex-patriate writers, Joseph Conrad and Henry James. The book first traces the history and theory of autobiography and nostalgia. Second, it interprets the nostalgic tensions as complex structures of thought which prompt certain inferences about the writers¿ respective attitudes towards the world and their inner selves.

Este libro presenta un estudio global de la peregrinación islámica delegada (al-¿ä¿ bi-l-niy¿ba) a la ciudad santa de La Meca, entre los ss. XI y XVI. Esta modalidad de peregrinación es conocida a través de certificados que fueron emitidos a peregrinos contratados para realizar los rituales requeridos en nombre de segundas personas. La investigación aquí realizada identifica el origen legal de la delegación en la jurisprudencia islámica sobre la herencia, y suma a este estudio el análisis de varios ejemplares acreditativos de la visita (ziy¿ra) a la tumba del profeta en Medina, no documentados hasta el momento en el contexto islámico medieval. Esta contribución tiene por objeto arrojar luz sobre la cultura material de la peregrinación islámica, analizando las particularidades materiales, textuales e iconográficas de estos documentos desde una perspectiva diacrónica.

This is a critical edition of a newly discovered Greek manuscript: a full commentary from Codex 199, Metochion of the Holy Sepulchre, Constantinople, entitled ¿Wisdom of Solomon¿an interpretation of Solomon¿s Book of Wisdom, by Origen, as they say¿. The book includes critical apparatus, commentary, and English translation.The Introduction acquaints readers with the text, as well as its late Byzantine context. In the manuscript both the Biblical text (quoted lemma after lemma) and the commentary are presented in full, which makes the document a valuable one for Old Testament scholars, since it contains not only the full commentary, but also the entire text of the Book of Wisdom, which at points has some interesting variations from all extant codices of the Septuagint.Intriguingly, Origen's name is on the rubric, but as author Panayiotis Tzamalikos demonstrates, the most likely author is Nikephorus Gregoras. Das Buch untersucht deutschsprachige Texte von KZ-Überlebenden aus Buchenwald und Dachau, die in den zwei produktivsten Phasen der Holocaustliteratur (1945-1949/1979-Gegenwart) veröffentlicht wurden. Die Autorin untersucht das Täterbild narratologisch und erinnerungskulturell vergleichend. Sie zeigt, dass die Autoren der frühen Lagerliteratur die von ihnen erlebten NS-Täter mit aller größter Intensität und Anschaulichkeit darstellen, während sich die der späten Lagerliteratur außer der Täterdarstellung auch auf der Konstruktion ihrer in den KZs verlorenen Identitäten hinwenden. Dementsprechend werden die Opferbilder viel konkreter und detaillierter als zuvor, während die Täterbilder mittlerweile amorpher, abstrakter und allgemeiner scheinen.

El populismo constituye un fenómeno de alcance global que ha generado un intenso debate académico en torno a su naturaleza. Partiendo de la concepción del populismo como discurso, en este libro se analiza cualitativa y cuantitativamente un corpus de textos producidos en dos países de habla hispana y pronunciados por dos líderes políticos que la bibliografía especializada ha caracterizado como representativos de tal fenómeno: Hugo Chávez en Venezuela y Pablo Iglesias en España. Para ello, el autor propone una caracterización del discurso populista y elabora un modelo para su análisis que le permite llevar a cabo un estudio contrastivo con el fin de señalar las similitudes y las diferencias entre uno y otro emisor.

Understanding WPA Readiness and Renewal examines WPA journeys and journeying.Designed for WPA graduate seminars and professional development workshops, this book addresses two questions:¿ How do people develop readiness to serve as WPAs?¿ How do experienced WPAs find or create renewal opportunities that help them move forward throughout their lives and careers?Authors address these questions from their sometimes-intersecting identities as BIPOC scholars, LGBTQ+ people, graduate students, and adjunct faculty, as well as early, mid-, and later-career WPAs.Authors draw on their experience teaching at a range of two- and four-year institutions to analyse the complexities, contingencies, and rewards of short and long-term WPA work. These scholars contend that understanding WPA "readiness" and "renewal" involves questioning inherited definitions of those terms and engaging in theorized, self-aware conversations that reflect, and reflect on, understudied fears and desires about WPA work from graduate preparation to preparing for leadership rotation and retirement.

This research focuses on the period 2003 to 2014, which was exceptional in the history of the Turkish Republic for its radical shift in the official stance adopted towards Kurds. The overall Kurdish policy of the AKP in 2003¿14 was part of a wider agenda of refashioning the nation on an anti-Kemalist, anti-elitist, and essentially pro-Muslim basis. This reconstruction of the nation was built on the populist claim to be ending the varying levels of social and cultural exclusion that the religious masses, Kurds, informal employees, and poorly educated rural masses had been subject to as subaltern groups of the Republic. This policy did not work. The AKP failed to establish Turkish hegemony over Kurds and could not suppress the Kurdish national movement. This book looks for an explanation of the failure of the Kurdish policy of the AKP by considering the limits of its social policy in instituting a compliant, cooperative, submissive Kurdish subjectivity. To do this, it focuses on the persistence of patient dissatisfaction in Hakkâri, a small Kurdish province, during the period despite the very considerable improvements to healthcare provision achieved in these years. The empirical findings of this study show that the persistence of patient dissatisfaction in Hakkâri as a mass phenomenon was essentially a daily symptom of an ethnopolitical resistance to being interpellated by the AKP as citizens-in-the-making who would compare past and present, realize the progress, and thus appreciate the current quality of healthcare provision by tolerating any shortcomings as a minor price to pay for relative material comfort. In short, the limit of the AKP strategy was reached in an attempt to carry out a sort of politics of redistribution that tried to convince Hakkârians to be content with a situation that fell short of full respect to their identity and bodies.

Italy¿s officially joining the China-led Belt and Road Initiative sparked a fierce debate. Der Sammelband präsentiert die Ergebnisse einer gemeinsamen Tagung der Akdeniz Universität und der Friedrich Ebert Stiftung, die im November 2021 in Antalya (Türkei) stattfand. Durch den Anwerbevertrag im Jahre 1961 eingeleitet, leben heute etwa 3 Millionen Menschen mit türkischer Herkunft in Deutschland. Auf der zweitägigen Tagung zum 60-jährigen Jubiläum diskutierten Wissenschaftler*innen, Expert*innen sowie Praktiker*innen aus Deutschland und der Türkei verschiedene Aspekte der Migration. Das besondere Augenmerk der Veranstalter richtete sich dabei auf mögliche Kooperationsfelder von deutschen und türkischen Institutionen sowie neuer Erkenntnisse in Wissenschaft, Politik und Praxis. El volumen ofrece una panorámica de las figuraciones del monstruo insólito en la narrativa de escritoras contemporáneas hispánicas, quienes renuevan este motivo desde ángulos sugerentes que van de lo fantástico a la ciencia ficción prospectiva, pasando por el terror sobrenatural y lo inusual. Los estudios combinan la dimensión teórica con abordajes de carácter crítico y comparatista, integrando la lectura de género, la dimensión ideológica y otras cuestiones transversales como la ecología, la política, la economía o la biotecnología. Se demuestra que la poética actual de autoría femenina reivindica la monstruosidad no realista como resorte idóneo para cuestionar el orden hegemónico y tematizar un conjunto de problemáticas posmodernas que recalcan la fragilidad del mundo y del individuo.

Die vorliegende Vergleichsstudie untersucht Körperinszenierungen im Film anhand eines repräsentativen Korpus. Das Augenmerk liegt insbesondere auf Performativität, Intermedialität und Genderdarstellung im europäischen Avantgardefilm sowie im expressionistischen Kunstfilm und im US-amerikanischen Spielfilm der 1920er Jahre. Ein diachroner Vergleich mit US-amerikanischen und schwedischen Experimentalfilmen der 1940er und -50er Jahre sucht Antworten auf die Frage, ob der Experimentalfilm neue, zusätzliche Inszenierungen des Körpers entwickelt. Über die bisherige Forschung hinausgehend werden ¿ auf Basis eines theoretisch fundierten, auf ausgewählte Körperkonzepte rekurrierenden Analyserahmens ¿ grundlegende Entwicklungsdynamiken und kulturübergreifende Querbezüge herausgearbeitet.
