  • af John Lee Martin
    307,95 kr.

John Lee Martin was born into a family in which his parents hated each other. This should have provided ample reason to fail but he was also diagnosed with bipolar disorder, a severe mental illness. This book is about John's journey from a seriously messed up family to a way of life that everyone should enjoy. He begins his story by describing an incident that occurred at his wife's 50th class reunion, at which John gets to know a couple that came to New Bern, North Carolina from San Diego, California. Things went well until this man discovered John was born in Bakersfield to parents that migrated from Oklahoma to find work. That's pretty much all this man knew about John but he turned away because he would have no contact with an "okie".This brought about a fitting start of a true story about a life that dealt with a hopelessly toxic family, periods of insanity, suicide attempts, electroshock treatments, numerous in-patient visits to seven different psychiatric hospitals, prison, divorce, job losses, and other more subtle discomforts. This book isn't about those situations in which a bipolar patient finds himself. It's about recovery. It is the story of how John came through all of it. It's the story of a man who came from a hot, dry, dusty cotton farm in Arvin, California to a sweet little town on the opposite side of the continent, and it is in this little town that John has built a life full of joy and peace. And it only took sixty years!About the AuthorJohn was born in the Kern County Hospital in Bakersfield, California to parents who had migrated from Oklahoma to find work. He lived on a cotton farm in Arvin, a hot, dusty, and dry environment just outside Bakersfield. The family returned to Oklahoma where he went through the 12 grades at Jenks Public Schools in Jenks, a small football town on the banks of the Arkansas River, just below Tulsa. After graduating high school he joined the navy and did his sea duty on a WWII era diesel/electric submarine. While stationed in New London, Connecticut John met a family that changed his life. He was influenced to begin a long pull that led him from that dusty cotton field to a much happier environment. His path led him to New Bern, North Carolina, a little town on the coast, where two beautiful rivers meet. It was here that he met his wife of nearly 40 years. This longevity is not common among many bipolar patients given that the disease is a behavioral disorder that can ruin relationships. God has given him the strength to come out with a pretty good life.

Marooned in the World Next Door: Book One in The Hole in the Universe SagaWEITFAHREROne summer day, while constructing a backyard tree fort, two boys, Lee and Mike, come upon a strange phenomenon: tucked in among the tree branches is a mysterious region of utter darkness, blacker than any night. They soon determine that the darkness conceals a portal of sorts, a passageway leading to an unknown location. But what location? Where? Seeking to find answers to these questions, the boys recruit Stefan, a new kid in the neighborhood, to go through the portal to gather information. Stefan's findings are astonishing: the unknown location on the other side of the portal is in some totally different world from Earth, a place where even the passage of time occurs at a different rate. Lee promptly dubs this phenomenon a "Hole in the Universe." Since the three of them are apparently the only people who know of the Hole's existence, they see this as the perfect opportunity for a secret summer adventure. They immediately begin making plans to begin exploring what they will come to think of as the World Next Door. But they will soon learn that there is a fine line separating high adventure from serious danger. Almost before they know it, they will find themselves on the run, fleeing the monstrous minions of a mysterious Enemy known as the Dark One. They will come to realize that their "secret summer adventure" was a bad idea from the start. But it is too late now for second thoughts; the situation is already beginning to spin out of control. And it is about to turn calamitous.About the AuthorWEITFAHRER spent over forty-five years in elementary school classrooms in a quest to impart knowledge (and, hopefully, a modicum of wisdom) to a succession of fourth, fifth, and sixth graders. That should explain a lot. . .

Kileeye, Kileeye! Birdie, Birdie! A bilingual story poem In English and MalayalamBy: Gita George-HatcherKileeye, Kileeye! is a silly rhyme that the author made up to recite to one of her grandchildren. It was soon a favorite with all the grandchildren who wanted to hear the poem repeatedly until they started reciting it on their own! It quickly became apparent to the author that children's natural love of interesting rhymes and rhythms could be effective in teaching any language to young children as well as to adults, and thus the idea for making Kileeye, Kileeye! into a book was born!About the AuthorGita George-Hatcher was brought up in India, her mother tongue being Malayalam, the language spoken in Kerala, a state in south-west India. She emigrated to the United States where she completed her advanced education in Public Administration and worked in Human Services and Government, in the fields of Human Resources, Labor Relations, and Civil Service. Gita is a fluent speaker of Malayalam, and taught herself to read and write Malayalam as an adult. She observed that in America and other lands to which Malayalis emigrated, the first and second generations of children born to Malayali parents were rapidly losing the language of their ancestors. Gita's own love for her native language and her desire to spark an interest in Malayalam among children of the Malayali diaspora led her to writing simple books in Malayalam, transliterated Malayalam and English. Her first book, My First Holy Qurbono Words for Children, was published in 2020.

LibertyBy: William QuinnAfter spending the first forty-eight years of his life in Brooklyn, William Quinn has retreated to a secluded, and undisclosed location deep in the woods of Northern Michigan, where he finds it's possible to reminisce and reflect on the experiences of a long, hard, and varied life that has stretched from the halls of academia, to the halls of tenement crack houses, and many divergent paths in between.Liberty is a playful reminder of how the games children play, and how the 'hand that rocks the cradle' can shape the politics, freedom, and the future of a nation. The story opens on a Brooklyn street, and gives us a glimpse into a culture that's all but forgotten, if not forbidden, and the society that culture had fostered. It's the perfect book to have with you if you're stuck in the house on a rainy day, or if you just want to remember how we used to be.

Knowledge of resilience building can assist individuals in being able to adapt and survive difficult times.Reacting emotionally, rather than with careful thinking and rational problem-solving results in decisions made through fear. These decisions can negatively affect self and others and are later regretted. Defending society and culture is an inclusive rather than exclusive process. We should seek alliances, cooperative problem-solving, sustainable community collaboration building, and consensus regarding future actions. We must invest in strengthening personal resilience, it includes support for building resilience in our family members, friends, and other members of society.
