Single ActionBy: Jim WilliamsWhen Johnny Dolan, a seasoned New York City investigative reporter, begins to cover the brutal murders of two computer programmers, it catapults him into the 1960's underworld of organized crime and government corruption.Working to uncover the crime details with earmarks of a mob hit, Dolan encounters an intricate web of facts and players. While interviewing Lydia Hayes, the beautiful ex-wife of one of the victims, Johnny discovers critical facts steering his investigation into the fast lane. Lydia reveals her ex was gay. Although Dolan's own homosexuality was neither a plus or a minus in his professional life, it impacted his military career and life.Johnny learns that Doug Hayes and his partner developed a computer program that could predict winning lottery numbers. Hoping to parlay this into cold hard cash, our victims have unwittingly orchestrated their deaths when they sign on with "The Preacher," an intelligent, soft-spoken black man who runs the Harlem numbers racket known as Policy. This connection catches the watchful eye of Bunny Ennis, a sadistic sociopath whose loyalty lies not with his Mafia boss, but with his own perverse pleasures and self-interest. Will Bunny and Lydia's masochistic relationship ultimately impact her personal and professional relationship with her boss, Frederick Douglass Summerfield, an ambitious African American congressman from New York City's Harlem District? His growing popularity and standing in the black community caught the attention of Lyndon Johnson and a whiff of corruption could stir the smoldering embers of racism, and shake the foundation of the President's civil rights agenda. With stakes this high, can Johnny Dolan keep it together while he uncovers the truth?Single Action, the latest crime thriller from Jim Williams, examines the ethical questions woven into a maze of twists and turns in this thought-provoking and suspenseful new novel.

Antiquity's Covered BridgeBy: Dorine EmeryDorine Emery is an avid photographer of covered bridges. CandlelightBy: William LawtonThis book neatly, without stalling or over representation, reviews the wonder years of the author's life. This review is in poetic terms and the poems also include a touch of sadness at getting older, but with the joy of romance always on a pedestal, without coercion or style. The poems herein denote discovering the opposite sex, as if it were a surprise birthday party, one that lasts a lifetime, and begins with one's expectations of going home for Christmas. Not a landscape but a journey through life, the poems in this book do not discuss but rather sigh at love, its dreamy quality and dreamy delusions. Additional poems in this book, not related to the general theme are intended to entertain and amuse, with this artwork on the cover as a "filling note."About the AuthorThe poet writes by thinking of the English language as an ocean of semantics, incorporating the tides as a new burst of sounds or ignoring them altogether as a harbinger of sleepiness - until the awakening of an idea.Influenced by Irish poets, as well as Shakespeare and romantic poets, the author is also a fan of Celtic music and writes songs as a volunteer for a not-for-profit organization.A past time of the author is watching cumulus clouds to spy for images reminding him of paintings and other artworks. The author is capricious and friendly and feels that talent is luck and hard work. He has previously been published by the "Storyteller Anthology Magazine" in the January/February/March 2017 edition, and is currently studying art, songwriting, and poetry. The author is a poet from the archives of true love, adventure, and self-sacrifice who hails from the hills of upstate New York, born in 1959, the son of a Humanist father and a mother who was a schoolteacher. As an adult travel to England, Italy, and India brought a touch of agnosticism to the author who grew up religious.

A Passion for the Teaching and Learning Process: Memories of Real Kids and Real Teachers in Real SchoolsBy: Charyll BoggsA Passion for the Teaching and Learning Process is a collection of real-life stories of the interaction between students and teachers, told by a forty-year veteran of education. The stories are based on the researched-based philosophies of noted authorities. These experts are frequently acknowledged throughout the book. While many of the teaching strategies are not new to the profession, they are certainly noteworthy and apply in contemporary classrooms. Current public information reveals the lack of proficient readers in an alarming number of school districts, perhaps the idea of visiting time-honored teaching strategies is in order. "Maslow before Bloom" is a strong focus throughout the book: the idea of recognizing the importance of meeting students' personal needs before turning to their cognitive skill development is something worth acknowledging. The purpose of the questions at the end of each section is meant to promote conversations around how, why, and in what manner the teaching and learning process can be improved within the current setting of the reader. School choice is becoming a major issue but in this author's experience, improving ALL schools is the best answer. Teachers are using all the tools to which they have access and must therefore be offered a new set of tools. This insightful read has much to say about how to reach every child and how to establish a culture for the collective efficiency of teachers.About the AuthorWith extensive experience as a teacher and administrator working in a variety of schools and working as a state consultant with schools K-12, Charyll Boggs certainly has a wide range of experience from which to draw knowledge regarding the teaching and learning process. She has also traveled throughout the United States to attend and/or present at many national conferences, which has provided her access to the most noted of educational experts.
Ulana M. Bochan's Frances Warde: The Footsteps of Mercy adds a new dimension to her two previous books, Living with Catherine McAuley and Walk the Seasons With Mercy. It explores the life of Frances Warde, whose earthly footsteps of Mercy imprinted values of faith, humility, compassion, and unconditional love. With an unwavering commitment of "yes" to God, Frances was able to overcome the most challenging circumstances of life. Heroic and selfless, she went to wherever she was called. She accepted the spiritual call to leave her homeland to help establish the first Mercy schools in the United States. Her pioneering spirit and natural gift for teaching others resulted in the spread of Mercy schools in this new land. Frances, guided by the call of the spirit to minister to all in need, made Mercy her spiritual quest, her defined existence. Frances Warde's life attests to what one person is capable of achieving when Mercy is actively lodged in the heart.(Appendix offers suggestions for incorporating Frances Warde: The Footsteps of Mercy in the classroom, groups, or individual meditation.)About the AuthorFor this author, Ulana M. Bochan, life has been not only a physical journey, but also a spiritual one. Born in Ukraine, Bochan, with her parents, fled their homeland during World War II. In horse and buggy style, fearing for their lives, the family continued their perilous journey. Prayer was their only support. Eventually, the family found refuge in Germany and, in 1949, arrived in the United States. In this land of freedom, Bochan had the opportunity to pursue an education. She received a B.A. in English from University of Minnesota and an MAT in teaching from Spalding University. She was fortunate to teach in a Mercy school for twenty-three years (Assumption High School, Louisville, KY). There, she absorbed values that have become her guidelines for life. In her retirement, she has returned to writing to capture her spiritual journey.
Juliette Caruso O'Dell has just completed her twentieth year teaching, seventeen of those teaching United States history. As a teacher, she struggled teaching the institution of slavery to her eighth graders. She turned to respected black authors and other resources to help instill in her students awareness of how a specific group of people were forcibly brought to the shores of the newly 'discovered' Americas. Juliette didn't want to just "tell" her students and stop there. She wanted to share with them how people can and did endure horrendously inhumane physical and mental cruelty and survive to tell their stories. Juliette then turned to Tom Feelings drawings in his book, The Middle Passage. She used them as a visual tool. As she lectured on the book, she noticed her students' uncomfortable faces, many of them drawing their own interpretations and feelings while seated at their desks. She knew this would be a way for them to express themselves with this outlet for both the ugliness and their understanding of what they were being taught. Throughout years of teaching, Juliette developed lesson plans for her classroom and bought many charcoal pencils. Her students were the motivating factor to continue using art, as Tom Feelings did, to educate about the Middle Passage. Also included in this book, is a 3 day - 50 minute lesson plan. Student Impressions of the Middle Passage: 2010-2020 is a compilation of her students' work.About the AuthorJuliette Caruso O'Dell lives in Indiana with her husband Scott. She received her bachelor's degree in education from Indiana State University in 2000 and her master's degree in urban studies from Indiana University in 2013. Juliette spends time with family and friends when not in class or traveling. She loves to visit foreign countries to learn their histories and their cultures.

Dr. George L. Lucas, MD practiced orthopedic surgery for fifty years. During that time, he treated thousands of people who were injured in a variety of ways. Orthopedic surgeons treat patients with infections, arthritis, congenital deformities, tumors, and developmental problems, but the bulk of an orthopedist's work involves caring for trauma patients, i.e., those who have been injured as a result of their own misadventures or those of others, such as a drunk driver. His two years as a navy surgeon during the Vietnam War brough another category of victims. Regardless of injury mechanics, one wonders how people could get into such a fix, and Dr. Lucas began to wonder about the statistics of being injured in various ways. This curiosity turned into a collection of accidents in various categories of injury and has resulted in a collection of sixteen chapters for different types of injury, auto accidents, falls, home, and industrial accidents etc. Statistics can be a bit dry, so each chapter is illustrated with an anecdote from Dr. Lucas's personal experience. He expresses his empathy for all his patients, regardless of what stupidity brough them to his door, and concludes each chapter with some suggestions as to how to avoid becoming one of the statistics themselves.
