This book is an enlarged second edition of a monograph published in the Springer AGEM2-Series, 2009. It presents, in a consistent and unified overview, a setup of the theory of spherical functions of mathematical (geo-)sciences. The content shows a twofold transition: First, the natural transition from scalar to vectorial and tensorial theory of spherical harmonics is given in a coordinate-free context, based on variants of the addition theorem, Funk-Hecke formulas, and Helmholtz as well as Hardy-Hodge decompositions. Second, the canonical transition from spherical harmonics via zonal (kernel) functions to the Dirac kernel is given in close orientation to an uncertainty principle classifying the space/frequency (momentum) behavior of the functions for purposes of data analysis and (geo-)application. The whole palette of spherical functions is collected in a well-structured form for modeling and simulating the phenomena and processes occurring in the Earth's system. The result is a work which, while reflecting the present state of knowledge in a time-related manner, claims to be of largely timeless significance in (geo-)mathematical research and teaching.

This book focuses on exploring and reconstructing teachers¿ perspectives of critical literacies comparatively. More specifically, the book highlights similarities and differences in the way teachers from Canada, Scotland and Finland think of the definition and implementation of critical literacies in their own situated, sociocultural and socio-educational contexts. The study is based on theory-generating expert interviews and a comparative case study design, and the analysis of the data follows a grounded theory framework. The main results show a considerable convergence in perspectives; while Canadian teachers explored connections of critical literacies with social justice education, Scottish teachers underlined their connection to reader identity development and Finnish teachers rather highlighted ideas of information management and multiliteracies. Nevertheless, there were noticeable connections among these perceptions which are integral in not only understanding the field, but alsobuilding towards a global, transnational lens of critical literacy practice.

The ¿Alawi community constitutes one of the oldest secret communities originating in what is known today as the Middle East. Today, the community members are scattered over many different countries around the world. The first ¿Alawis came to Germany as Gastarbeiter (guest workers) in the 1960s following bilateral labour agreements between Turkey and Germany. The present book explores the multifaceted experiences of ¿Alawiness during the post-migration period in Germany. The book demonstrates the pervasiveness of the practice of secrecy in the various spheres of ¿Alawi migrant life in Germany. Throughout this book, it becomes evident that living at the nexus of being an ¿Alawi and a migrant generates a set of experiences that are shaped by the accelerated sociocultural, political, economic and technological developments in Germany, but also in the countries of origin. The focus of this book is on identification practices, the practices of secrecy, the dynamics of interethnic social relations, and the religious practices of Turkish ¿Alawi men and women in present-day Germany. The book traces in particular the stories of the new generations of ¿Alawis whose experiences have largely remained ignored.

The 3rd edition is dedicated to the increased requirements for sustainability and picks up on the higher dynamics as a result of agile system development, which is widespread today. The application of the methods to technical systems is also extended to include socio-technical systems.The work provides a historical outline of development trends in systems engineering (SE) up to the present. Included is a systematic examination of the various models and procedural concepts of SE. Based on this, the Generic Systems Engineering (GSE) is developed, consisting of a new meta-model, which can be combined with a project management-integrated process concept in a problem-solving-oriented manner and can be permanently updated or supplemented. Eight test examples show possible fields of application of the GSE, which range from virtual product development to field data feedback into it. Furthermore, examples for the transfer of GSE to socio-technical systems, i.e. companies and companynetworks, are presented.

This book employs a biographical approach to comprehensively study a set of Tang era-tomb guardian figurines, known as the Four Gods (Sishen), comprising a pair of warriors (Dangkuang and Dangye) and a pair of hybrid beasts (Zuming and Dizhou). These objects were exclusively used by officials until 841 AD and were mainly found in capitals then. They disappeared in the 9th century AD. The book is divided into three sections. Part one focuses on their symbolism through names, images, burial contexts, associated ritual regulations, and the interplay of all of these, revealing their dual significance ¿ apotropaic and political, tied to ritual propriety, nuo exorcism, yin-yang divination, and more. Part two explores their connection to other supernatural tomb figurines in the early and middle Tang periods, challenging previous theories and highlighting regional standardization. Additionally, this part delves into the Four Gods¿ regulated production, government oversight, and role in funerary processions. Part three examines their disappearance due to shifting views on the afterlife and diminishing national power. It also explores changes in the usage of related tomb objects after the Tang era, focusing on protective functions and spatial concepts.
