A compelling novel rich in beauty and magic by "a gifted storyteller" (Sydney Morning Herald). Xavier is an outsider, with ideas that just don't add up in a post-modern world. It is not easy trying to become an artist. Especially with a tribal Hmong mother and an Australian father, both of whom are believed dead - and a grandfather who was a Hmong shaman. Unexpectedly, modern medicine saves Xavier from a fatal head injury with consequences that no-one is prepared to believe. For answers, Xavier must travel to the other side of the world: "there are others". Who is Eve, is she really afflicted with the same strange ability? But she is much more than Xavier ever dreamed of. Somehow, they seem to have escaped the limitations of Western Rationalism, even if science is working on an explanation. Set one year before 9/11, The Floating is about being different and fitting in, discovering love, and finding inspiration in small things. A brilliant novel for anyone who still dares to dream.
When The Borche invaded the seven worlds of the Andromeda Galaxy the people fought hard to defend their colonies but they were confronted by a disciplined and unwavering foe. The Borche proved overwhelming and without mercy, killing indiscriminately, their goal, extermination and slavery. When it was realised that the war was lost seven fleets were quickly launched to seven points in the Universe identified as having habitable worlds. Each fleet carried experimental jump drive technology that would enable them to travel vast distances in a very short time. The reliability of the neutron powered drive was in doubt but there was no choice, they had to flee. The First Andromedan Fleet under the command of Admiral Karlou Vardourn left its home world with a select crew and many thousands of military personnel and civilians on a quest to settle on one of these new worlds in a place far away from The Borche.During their final jump a cataclysmic failure saw the fleet scattered with many ships lost. Only the Admiral's ship, the ISS Titania arrived at the new world, severely damaged. The planet Terrania was beautiful; a watery blue ball with a single grey moon warmed by a medium sized yellow star but to the horror of the Andromendan's it was already occupied.Without anywhere else to go they now had to decide to either negotiate asylum or just take what they needed from people of this world, just like The Borche had taken from them or would something else jeopardise their hopes for the future.

Under one roof, there are lots of wonderful things. Including games, family and fun! Join the characters of Under One Roof as they discover all that their home has to offer. What will you find under one roof? After looking for a book her son that incorporated a multi-generational household and failing to find one, Isobel McKay decided to write her own. Via her research, she found that, in 2018, 1 in 5 Australian homes were multi-generational. In modern Australia, multi-generational living is now as much a financial choice for families as it is a cultural norm for others. In their AHURI Final Report about multi-generation households, senior research fellows at the City Futures Research Centre, Easthope and Liu (2012) contend that "while closeness between parents and children is the most telling factor in influencing the likelihood of parent-adult offspring cohabitation, cultural and ethnic backgrounds of these households play a significant role in the practice of multi-generation living. However, recent research shows that possible socioeconomic factors and financial stressors may be behind the increase in multi-generation households in the western world."The author created this book to show the many wonderful activities that take place within a multi-generation household through diversity. Multi-generation homes may be full of noise, movement and mess, but they are also full of love.Source: Liu E. and Easthope H. The Trick with Sticks is an uplifting story about self-worth, acceptance, happiness, building confidence and that it is ok to be different, but most of all, it is a story that helps demystify friendships and the formation of bonds."The Trick with Sticks" is just one strategy to help children with friendships and bonds by creating a framework to understand and discuss social interactions. Friendships are a natural development process for most children, but there are some who find the development of friendships tricky. What draws children together? What keeps them together? What can parents, teachers or carers do to help children develop these friendships? What are these bonds and how can they be explained? There are many opportunities throughout the story for meaningful conversations, and the chance to reflect on the things that are happening in your child's life. This is so empowering for children who may be going through a tough time making friends or for a range of challenges such as bullying, self-esteem, self-worth, unhappiness, low confidence and acceptance of themselves and others. This is highly recommended for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), as they can really struggle with friendships and can often miss social cues or miss opportunities to connect or they can make the same mistakes again and again. In addition to this, neuro-typical children often miss the clues on how to be inclusive and supportive of some of their friends and this concept will empower everyone.

How did German women really view Hitler and his Nazi State?Twenty one German women answered that question in the 1970s when they volunteered to share their wartime experiences with a young New Zealander (the author) who was trying to adapt to living in Germany. The interviews were collected on tape in 1972 and 1973 and translated by the author. By the time the project was complete the author had started studying again and this material landed in the bottom drawer. These oral histories are a fascinating look into German life during the Nazi era. While collecting these stories the author researched women's place in Germany in the 1930s and 40s to put the stories into context. This research is presented in Part 1 of the book followed by the interviews in Part 2.
