George Whitefield was a popular Calvinist circuit preacher of England and frontier America who along with John Wesley, Charles Wesley, and Jonathan Edwards was very influential in the American Great Awakening of the mid-18th century. There is a widely-spread desire to make things pleasant in religion, -to saw off the corners and edges of the cross, and to avoid, as far as possible, self-deniaL On every side we hear professing Christians declaring loudly that we must not be "narrow and exclusive," and that there is no harm in many things which the holiest saints of old thought bad for their souls. That we may go anywhere, and do anything, and spend our time in anything, and read anything, and keep any company, and plunge into anything, and all the while may be very good Christians, -this, this is the maxim of thousands. In a day like this I think it good to raise a warning voice, and invite attention to the teaching of God's Word. It is written in that Word, "Come out, and be separate

"George Muller of Bristol" is the ultimate George Muller biography, written by a man who knew him, and the one approved by Mr. Muller's own son-in-law. Though A. T. Pierson's book contains many amazing accounts of how God provided for George Muller and his ministry, more than anything the book is a powerful narrative of how God responds to faith and prayer. Muller's life goal was to show that God is a living God who hears and answers prayer, and God richly blessed this life of faith. The refreshing thing about this biography is that you learn just as much about the God Muller served as you do about Muller himself. The author also often steps out of the narrative to help the reader to apply lessons from Muller's life. Tremendous insight is gained into why and how he became a great man of faith and prayer. And as if the unfolding of this isn't enough, there's the added bonus of author A.T. Pierson's insightful commentary on biblical principles for deeper-level Christian living. Reading this book is like sitting at the feet of a personal spiritual mentor. The author has a masterful way of turning a phrase and more importantly he shows us how and what and who made Muller who he became--a man of God extraordinaire. The faith that distinguished his Christianity from mediocre believers of his day was unclouded by sentimentality or mystical notions, it was steeped in Scripture and bathed in the love of Christ. A wonderful book that truly brings glory to God!

The "Three Angels Messages," which was written by John Nevins Andrews in 1860, is a study of what the symbols of Revelation mean (with emphasis on the two-horned beast). This early Advent book examines the three angel's message of Revelation 14, their timing, and meaning and the role of the United States in Bible prophecy. This little book is a compilation of more than sixty of the greatest quotes from the pen of David Brainerd, drawn from his book, "The Life and Diary of David Brainerd." Brainerd (1718-1747) was an American missionary to the Native Americans who had a particularly fruitful ministry among the Delaware Indians of New Jersey. During his short life he was beset by many difficulties. As a result, his biography has become a source of inspiration and encouragement to many Christians, including missionaries such as William Carey and Jim Elliot, and Brainerd's cousin, the Second Great Awakening evangelist James Brainerd Taylor (1801-1829). Clyde Kilby summarised Brainerd's influence as being based on the fact that, 'in our timidity and our shoddy opportunism we are always stirred when a man appears on the horizon willing to stake his all on a conviction'. From the eighteenth century, missionaries also found inspiration and encouragement from the biography. Gideon Hawley wrote in the midst of struggles: 'I need, greatly need, something more than humane [human or natural] to support me. I read my Bible and Mr. Brainerd's Life, the only books I brought with me, and from them have a little support'. Other missionaries who have asserted the influence of Jonathan Edwards's biography of Brainerd on their lives include Henry Martyn, William Carey, Jim Elliot. and Adoniram Judson.

Horatius Bonar anticipates many of the questions that arise in the early months of discipleship and provides the answers. This short book was written over 100 years ago but deals with issues that still concern new believers today. The principles of Christian living do not change and so Bonar's advice is of permanent value. Horatius Bonar is best known today as a hymn writer. Many of his hymns are still used in worship. He was also an effective evangelist and a sensitive pastor. This experience is obvious throughout the book. Using this book is an ideal way of providing firm footholds for new Christian's first steps.
