After a little mishap in the very human city of Chicago, Grace James is forced to move back to her parents' hometown in the middle of nowhere-and right at the start of high school, too.
The very secret and very small town of Shady Woods allows werewolves, vampires, sirens, and dendrites like Grace to live some semblance of a "normal" life, and although it's stifling to a city girl, Grace will at least learn how to control her abilities, which sort of makes her feel like a superhero.
As she grapples with accepting her new home and its sometimes vomit-inducing quirks, buildings start to burn. She thought her parents overacted when they moved out of Chicago, but was her slip more dangerous than she realized-and did that danger follow her to Shady? Or are there more sinister secrets to discover in the paranormal Northwoods?
