It's the 1950s and there's been a horrendous murder in the town of Essex, Vermont. Sheriff Max Duncan strikes an uneasy alliance with the village of Essex Junction's Police Chief, Rob Allen. Suspects include a teenager with an ugly secret, and a cursing Abenaki who suffers from battle fatigue. Counseling couple, Don and Connie Collins, are drawn into this mystery which takes place amongst familiar historic landmarks in Burlington, Shelburne, Essex Junction, and beyond.
