** spoiler alert ** What started off as a YA book, soon turned nightmarishly juvenile.
To quote the protagonist herself "we're both so successful, it's sickening". This book and its romanticisation, Disney princess setting, was just too much for my liking.
These might be considered spoilers, so please don't continue reading, if you haven't read the book; but the protagonist being beautiful, her first love being oh-so achingly beautiful, her second love being a muscular and tall neurosurgeon, his sister and her new friend a wonderful rich sidekick, the protagonist opening her own floral shop with no bumps or struggles along the way and being an immediate success (of course), and I could continue, but it is just too sickening.
I do not understand all the praise that this book has received.
The book covers a very important topic of domestic violence and I do appreciate how well Hoover puts into words the love you feel for someone, but also the repulsion, because of the abuse and how that confusing imbalance makes the abusee stay with the abuser.
The overall maple-syrup, cotton candy sugariness of the story overshadows how amazing a decision Lily makes at the end. Because that decision isn't made by many abusees.
I don't recall who recommended this, it was a favourites-video and Verity was also recommended, which I also purchased and I am dreading what's ahead.
AND! I forgot and had to edit here: but did anyone else find it a WHOLE 'nother topic that Atlas was 18 when he was with young Lily? Isn't that illegal in America?
En øjenåbende bog, som har fået mig til at se nogle ting i andet lys og givet mig en bedre forståelse for andres situation. Jeg var trist men også glad da jeg lagde bogen bogen fra mig.
