German photographer Johann Karl (born 1992) captures places from his childhood in Waldstadt, Kummersdorf and Sperenberg, south of Berlin. The Forbidden City gathers Karl's research, illustrating the region's constant change through the Wilhelmine era, National Socialism and Soviet occupation to today.
