Den japanske forfatter, Haruki Murakami, blev født i Kyoto, Japan i 1949. Hans værker er oversat til mange sprog, hvilket vidner om hans store popularitet verden over. Haruki Murakami voksede op med sine forældre i byen Kobe. Begge hans forældre underviste i japansk litteratur, hvilket havde stor indflydelse på ham. Murakami selv blev uddannet ved universitetet i Waseda, hvor han læste klassisk græsk og drama. Efter sin uddannelse bestyrede han fra 1974 til 1981 en jazz-café i Tokyo, og det var i denne periode at hans tre første romaner blev til. Haruki Murakami debuterede med romanen ”Hear the wind sing” fra 1979. Hans fik den prestigefyldte japanske litterære pris, Noma, for sin tredje roman ”En vild fårejagt” udgivet på dansk i 1996. Haruki Murakamis hovedværk er romanen ”Trækopfuglens krønike” fra 1994. Romanen handler om Toru Okadas liv, der bliver skildret fra hans synspunkt gennem en jeg-fortæller.
