The year is 1648. The Ukraine. Cossacks rush up and down the aisles while hundreds of Jews sit, placid in their Synagogue. And then allow their throats to be cut. How could these victims lean forward, and raise their heads to accept plunging blades? Only one survivor, a small boy. He disappears and the search for him begins. Chimielnicki and his hordes of Cossacks orchestrate a brutal revolution with horrendous crimes as they rape, pillage and kill changing the face of the Ukraine and destroying a Jewish way of life. Fighting depression over the loss of his wife and father and missing son, Elisha responds to the strength and bond of friendship offered by Stefan his childhood Christian friend Swept by events they find themselves in Chmielnicki's army. Elisha seeks his son who was not among the dead in the pogrom that eliminated his village. Ultimately, he finds him being cared for by Helena, Chmielnicki's mistress. A poignant friendship and lasting love develops between these two. With a need for vengeance Elisha, and Stefan, develop a small fighting force to harass and humiliate their enemy. They must rely on intelligence, instinct and determination to survive against monumental odds. This narrative is developed in a setting of fact based historical events.
