For William James, pragmatism is the solution to the conflict between the demands of science and religion. He defends the relevance of temperament in each individual's adoption of a philosophy, and he understands the dispute between rationalists and empiricists as a clash of temperaments. Pragmatism is a moral commitment to a way of understanding the world that trusts that the involvement of intelligence and agents is real, and that our theories introduce new elements and modify the course of the future.
