In the 1980's correction officers in the state of Massachusetts did not feel that they were being well represented by their national union known as A.F.S.C.M.E.. In a daring move, a courageous group of officers did the unthinkable and launched an initiative to create their own independent union. Officer Richard Merrett was one of the group's leading figures. What followed was a tumultuous, and at times, down right frightening campaign filled with roadblocks laid before them by a powerful and national union that did everything they could to stymie their efforts.
