What's a girl and her horse supposed to do when the world has gone belly-up? Find a new one of course! Gwen and her horse Pearl live in a world devastated by a virus brought back by the first spacecraft returning from Mars. The two manage to escape the death and destruction that prevails and make their way to the Oregon coast where crazy Aunt Elaine has a secluded cabin in the woods. When Gwen finds a strange bracelet belonging to her newly departed Aunt and a cryptic last diary, she uncovers a secret that catapults her and Pearl into unknown worlds. Gwen wrestles with keeping her new secret and double life from the local community she has begun to feel a part of. When Calvin, a young man from the community and someone Gwen has a particular fondness for, reveals the communities suspicion that the long term effects of the virus could mean the end of humanity, Gwen struggles with wanting to help or just running away from it all. But Gwen is finally forced to examine her role in helping humanity when she picks up a couple fellow travelers who find out about her abilities and encourage her to use them to save what's left of the human race.
