John Steinbeck er født den 27. februar 1902. Den fandt sted i Salinas, og vi skal hele 66 år frem i tiden, førend han da måtte hoppe ud af træskoene for sidste gang. Inden da nåede han at give os utrolig mange hjertevarme, omend barske beretninger fra livet i USA. Det er fortællinger om fattigdom og nødvendigheden af at flytte sig fra sted til sted, ganske enkelt meget kendt i romanen Vredens druer og endog igennem Øst for paradis. Det er også ganske godt udfoldet, dog mere ordknapt, i Mus og mænd. Det mærkes altid, at John Steinbeck nærer en stor sympati for de mere prøvede individer i USA, og han gør det straks til sin mission, sådan former fornemmelsen sig, når man læser hans værker, at skrive om de udstødte, de hårdprøvede. Han gør det med en utrolig nerve og sensibilitet, hvormed man som læser blot ender med at læne sig tilbage og nyde de indbyrdes mekanismer, der styrer karaktererne, nogle gange mod døden, andre gange mod bedre tider.
