Plants have been reported to be used as sources for treatment of various ailments as per scriptures of native medicine. They are seen as promising alternatives to existing medicines of synthetic origin and have been demonstrated to possess activity against a wide range of microorganisms. Traditional medicine using plants has wide scale patronage, especially in a country like India, which act as treasure house of plants of biomedical importance. Plants are now being thoroughly investigated to obtain active compounds, which may help replace antimicrobials against which the phenomenon of microbial resistance has emerged. This review describes the pharmacologically relevant properties of selected commonly available medicinal plants: Rumex nepalensis, Mimosa pudica, Solanum nigrum, Solanum torvum, Acalypha indica, Andrographis paniculata, Prunus armeniaca, Ziziphus mauritiana, Vitex negundo and Glycyrhhyza glabra. Their taxonomic information, geographical distribution, phytochemical profile, biomedical properties as well as antimicrobial activity have also been enlisted.
