He had been the only survivor of his tribe after a long war against European settlers who always won. Those who remained scattered went to live in reservations. But not him. He would undertake a journey alone. He had always liked the idea of traveling south, as his predecessors had done. Having been left alone now, he would go in search of new lands, new horizons.
