The first extant commentaries on Aristotle¿s Rhetoric come from the 12th century AD, namely the ones written by an anonymous author and by Stephanus. This book examines for the first time the context in which the two commentaries were written, the identity and features of their authors and the philosophical ideas expressed in them. This examination provides a better understanding of the reception of Aristotle¿s Rhetoric in Byzantium.

This volume includes twelve studies by international specialists on Aristotle and his commentators. Among the topics treated are Aristotle¿s political philosophy and metaphysics, the ancient and Byzantine commentators¿ scholia on Aristotle¿s logic, philosophy of language and psychology as well as studies of broader scope on developmentalism in ancient philosophy and the importance of studying Late Antiquity.

The series Commentaria in Aristotelem Graeca et Byzantina (CAGB) presents editions of commentaries and other Greek texts on the transmission and the reception of Aristotle in the ancient world and medieval Byzantium until the Renaissance. This fundamental work is intended to promote the study of the heritage and the subsequent development of peripatetic philosophy, and thus to provide a significant contribution to contemporary scholarship on Byzantine philosophy. The thematic and scholarly content of the new series complements and follows the tradition of the Commentaria in Aristotelem Graeca (1882-1909), founded by Hermann Diels. The programme is planned to include texts by Alexander of Aphrodisias, Simplikios, Johannes Philoponos, Michael of Ephesus, Nikephoros Blemmydes, Theodoros Metochites, Georgios Scholarios and Bessarion. The volumes consist of a praefatio on the textual tradition, the text with apparatus criticus, and normally a translation in a modern language. Other sections and aids are included depending on the nature of the texts (commentary, paraphrase, compilation, scholia, etc.) and how well they have survived. The edition of these works, which were often written as working texts, is intended to reflect the historical state of the language according to modern philological standards. Besides a complete catalogue of manuscripts and a prosopographical compendium on the reception of Aristotle in Byzantium, the volumes of the CABC are also intended to facilitate exegetic access, in particular to important new discoveries and fragments of lost ancient texts.

In der Reihe Commentaria in Aristotelem Graeca et Byzantina (CAGB) sollen Kommentare sowie weitere griechische Textquellen zur Aristotelesuberlieferung und -rezeption in der Antike und im byzantinischen Mittelalter bis in die Renaissancezeit editorisch erschlossen werden. Diese Grundlagenarbeit soll vor allem das Studium des Nachwirkens und der Weiterbildung der peripatetischen Philosophie fordern und dabei wesentlich zur aktuellen Forschungsdiskussion um die byzantinische Philosophie beitragen.Im Programm der neuen Reihe, die sich thematisch und wissenschaftlich an die von Hermann Diels begundeten Commentaria in Aristotelem Graeca (1882-1909) anschliet und diese erganzt, sind u.a. Texte von Alexander von Aphrodisias, Simplikios, Johannes Philoponos, Michael von Ephesos, Nikephoros Blemmydes, Theodoros Metochites, Georgios Scholarios und Bessarion vorgesehen.Die Editionsbande enthalten neben einer uberlieferungsgeschichtlichen Praefatio und einem Text mit kritischem Apparat im Regelfall auch eine Ubersetzung in eine moderne Sprache. Weitere Apparate und Hilfsmittel werden je nach Textart (Kommentar, Paraphrase, Kompilation, Scholien usw.) und Uberlieferungszustand beigegeben. Die Edition der haufig als Gebrauchstexte entstandenen Zeugnisse soll entsprechend aktuellen philologischen Standards stets auch den historischen Sprachstand widerspiegeln.Neben einem umfassenden Handschriftenkatalog und einem prosopographischen Kompendium zur Aristotelesrezeption in Byzanz sollen die Studienbande der CAGB auch die Moglichkeit einer weiterfuhrenden exegetischen Erschlieung insbesondere fur einschlagige Neufunde und Fragmente verlorener antiker Texte bieten.

Der heute verlorene Kommentar von Alexander aus Aphrodisias (ca. 200 n. Chr.) zur Physik des Aristoteles ist eines der wichtigsten Werke der Antike: beeinflusste er doch als Quelle sowohl die neuplatonischen Kommentatoren zu Aristoteles (vor allem Simplikios) als auch ¿ vermittelt durch die Zitate bei Averroes ¿ die Naturphilosophie des Mittelalters. Die von Marwan Rashed präsentierte Erstedition und Untersuchung der nahezu 700 byzantinischen Scholien, die erst jüngst in zwei Pariser Handschriften vom Anfang des 14. Jahrhunderts (Paris. Suppl. gr. 643, Paris. gr. 1859) entdeckt wurden, erlauben eine genauere Rekonstruktion der physikalischen Lehren Alexanders und tragen zugleich zum besseren Verständnis der Geschichte des Aristotelismus und der vor-klassischen Physik bei. Auch finden sich beispielsweise neue Präzisierungen seiner Lehre von Ort und Zeit ebenso wie seines Zugangs zur Bewegung des ¿Ersten Bewegers¿. Die byzantinischen Scholien ermöglichen zum ersten Mal, die völlige Abhängigkeit des Simplikios von seinem Vorgänger festzustellen und, noch wichtiger, die Transformationen, die er an der peripatetischen Naturphilosophie unternahm, um sie mit einem gewissen Platonismus in Einklang zu bringen.
