In her sculptures, installations, films, and interventions in public spaces, Croatian artist Luiza Margan explores the disparity between officially recorded history and history which is invisible. She questions the ways in which power structures and ideological systems are etched into the public sphere and interwoven into collective memory. The installation Cache, created in the course of the Artist-in-Residence-Program of the ZF Kunststiftung, examines the traces of National Socialist rule left in the city of Friedrichshafen. The title alludes to a hidden location, a concealed storehouse for information.

Ron Edwards (1930--2008) had a passion for recording and safeguarding for future generations Australia's unique folk heritage. In 1950, at a time when popular wisdom had it that Australia had few folk songs, Edwards and poet John Manifold produced the Bandicoot Ballads, trailblazing broadsheets which marked the beginning of Australia's folk music revival. He also published the first book of Australian folk songs with music. Moving to far North Queensland he made his living painting nudes, horses and bush landscapes. Discovering tradition-bearers all around him he became an irrepressible field collector making Cairns the folk song, yarnspinning and bush craft capital of Australia. He also documented meticulously a wealth of ancient Aboriginal rock art.A passionately independent free spirit and sole proprietor of his Rams Skull Press for over fifty years, Edwards published over three hundred titles, mostly on Australian folklore and traditional craft, the overwhelming majority of which he wrote and illustrated himself. Over forty years on, his pivotal publications The Big Book of Australian Folk Song, The Australian Yarn and Traditional Australian Bush Crafts remain standard references. His monumental twelve volume Index of Australian Folk Song warrants recognition as a national treasure.

In 1931, the English designer Gerald Summers and his partner Marjorie Butcher opened their business, Makers of Simple Furniture, in London. Until 1940, the company produced hundreds of ingenious plywood designs that helped define the idea of the modern interior in Great Britain. Based on Marjorie Butcher's vivid recollections and a wealth of unpublished material-including photographs, personal correspondence, designs and workshop documents-the book traces the groundbreaking achievements of the furniture company best known for the iconic Bent Plywood Armchair .  The publication was supported in part by the Graham Foundationfor Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts. GERALD SUMMERS (1899-1967) is one of the foremost furniture designers of the twentieth century. Born in Alexandria, Egypt, he worked as an engineer before starting his design career. In 1931, he and his partner, MARJORIE BUTCHER (1909-1996), opened Makers of Simple Furniture in London. They managed the firm for almost ten years, producing hundreds of pieces for the modern home. In 1940, wartime exigencies brought an end to the enterprise. They redirected their energy to Gerald Summers Ltd., a supplier of engineering parts. MARTHA DEESE is an authority on Gerald Summers. She earned a master's degree in decorative art history from Cooper-Hewitt Museum/Parsons School of Design, New York, and worked for three decades as an administrator at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Her groundbreaking article on Summers and his firm, Makers of Simple Furniture, published in the Journal of Design History in 1992, remains the principal source on the designer.

This publication gives a comprehensive overview of the work of Italian artist Alberto Garutti. His innovative oeuvre, consisting primarily of sculptures, installations, and works in public space, explores site-specificity along with its social realities and historical contexts. With the artistic and methodological strategies he has employed since the 1990s, he has revolutionized the vocabulary of public and site-specific art. ALBERTO GARUTTI (1948-2023) has been a key figure on the Italian and European contemporary art scene of the last forty years. Since the early 1990s, Garutti's practice has evolved into a radical manifesto for public art. In her works, Nina Annabelle Märkl (b. 1979) develops permeable viewing spaces that lie at the interface between drawing, object, and installation. The viewers move through landscape-like settings in modular spatial installations, entering into various dialogues with the works. In addition, through the shift in perspective, they can experience the possibility of seeing themselves in their own observations and can question the structures of their perception. The monograph Scapes unites various strands of Nina Annabelle Märkl's work in the diversity of their links and leaps between drawing and spatiality, which follow on from one another in the diversity of manifestation or interpenetrate one another in individual arrangements.

Since moving from Amsterdam to the rural Uckermark region in north-eastern Germany, artist Marieken Verheyen has undertaken small sensory expeditions into the fascinating forest areas just a short walk from her atelier. She searches for traces of their inhabitants and the people who use the forest and attempts to feel her way into the forest creatures' ways of seeing and thinking. In the process, Verheyen finds, again and again, that the entire world can be found compressed into this small area: contradictory ideas of nature, the often opposing interests of various users of the forests, and the destructive influence of the climate crisis. Her images also depict the irresistible yet elusive power and beauty of nature.

This comprehensive monograph brings together over 100 works spanning five decades of Thomas Schütte's career and examines his artistic production across multiple disciplines. The Düsseldorf-based sculptor, draftsman, model maker, and sometime architect Thomas Schütte works in scales ranging from the minuscule to the monumental. His art addresses the mechanisms of power, the fall of empire, and end-of-world narratives generated by a culture of societal alienation. Over the past five decades, Schütte's work has continued its powerful critique of the Western world and today takes on renewed urgency. Published in conjunction with the first museum survey of the artist's work in the United States in over 20 years, Thomas Schütte presents a holistic overview of his career from 1975 to the present. Taking aesthetics, form, and history as its focus, the publication featuring sculptures, drawings, prints, and experiments in architecture, alongside revelatory archival materials that have never been published before. Essays by Paulina Pobocha, Jennifer Allen, and André Rottmann provide historical and theoretical pathways into the complexity of Schutte's oeuvre, and contributions by artists Marlene Dumas and Charles Ray reflect on Schutte's significance through close readings of his work.

The ALBERTINA modern exhibition presents Alfred Kubin's view of the world of evil, the predominant theme of his life and work. The aesthetics of evil prove to be the antithesis of a tranquil idyll for him, one of the most outstanding drawing artists of the twentieth century. Trapped in his fantasies, he finds himself confronted with uncanny dream apparitions and a pronounced fear of the feminine, the night, and fate. This catalogue explores Kubin's graphic cosmos of the ominous, his nightmares and obsessions and the iconography of evil. ALFRED KUBIN (1877-1959) was an important Austrian draughtsman and graphic artist. In 1898, after a traumatic childhood in Zell am See and a series of mental crises, he began his artistic training in Munich. Kubin worked through his nightmares and obsessions in a large number of fantastic drawings.

Frans Hals is one of the most important portrait painters of all time. Like Rembrandt, the famous Dutch Baroque master's striking portraits of the bourgeoisie and social outsiders are distinguished by their extraordinary vividness and accurate depiction. His sketch-like paintings, executed with bold brushstrokes, had a decisive influence on modernist painting. This comprehensive publication coincides with the first major survey exhibition of Hals' oeuvre in more than thirty years. FRANS HALS (1582/84-1666) was born in Antwerp, the son of a cloth merchant. In 1610 he was accepted into the Haarlem Guild of St. Luke. Hals created hundreds of genre paintings, individual, and group portraits and enjoyed great public prestige. Despite his fame during his lifetime, it was not until the nineteenth century that he was enthusiastically rediscovered by the Impressionists and Realists.

This catalogue pays tribute to the artist Sven Drühl as a collector and theorist. For more than twenty years, he has been exhibiting his conceptual landscape paintings, neons and bronzes in institutional exhibitions. Now, for the first time, the Hans Erni Museum Lucerne and the Museum Wiesbaden are showing Drühl's collection of nineteenth-century paintings alongside his works: from Eugen Bracht to Janus La Cour and Carl Spitzweg. Another key aspect is Drühl's theoretical work, in which he has made a name for himself, as a guest editor of Kunstforum International and as the author of numerous articles on art history. SVEN DRÜHL (*1968, Nassau) studied art and mathematics. He became internationally known through his compilations of famous landscape paintings. With a PhD in art theory, he is also an author and editor of publications on contemporary art.

"The Thread of Water" is a reflexive wandering in the depths of the Mediterranean sea. The photographs investigate thecolonial politics of the underseas through the eeriness of subaquatic weightlessness and light contrasts: artifacts and bodiesare altered, if not disincarnated, in undefined waterscapes that build a narrative of dispossession and perdition. From digitalto analog photography, including thermal imagery, the collection curated for this book questions how movement cantranscend landscapes to embrace affect. But, more than anything, "The Thread of Water" is an intimate narrative abouttrauma and queerness that navigates different forms of storytelling (photographs, drawings, poetry, fieldwork notes) toexplore the in-betweens, the coexistent multiplicities, and the pervasiveness of liberatory praxis.

From an inside peek at the inner workings of Hollywood to the backstage drama of Broadway, from a poignant look at the black upper class to an honest look at the WASP elite, this elegantly wrought memoir of an extraordinary family has something for everyone.Growing up with a black Auntie Mame-like mother (who performed with the likes of Lena Horne) and an Anglo sea-faring father, Susan Fales-Hill moved seamlessly between many worlds. But it was from her mother -- a woman who was dressed by Givenchy and sculpted by Alexander Calder, yet rejected by many a casting agent for her "dark," unconventional looks -- that Susan drew inspiration, particularly when she faced challenges in her own career as a television writer in Hollywood, a town that wasn't always receptive to positive images of people of color. As a result the two developed a bond that mothers and daughters everywhere will find inspiring. Both a universally touching mother-daughter story and a portrait of a dazzling American family, Always Wear Joy is a memoir readers won't soon forget.

Winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award for Criticism and the Mark Lynton History Prize Through the story of the pioneering photographer Eadweard Muybridge, the author of Recollections of My Nonexistence explores what it was about California in the late 19th-century that enabled it to become such a center of technological and cultural innovationThe world as we know it today began in California in the late 1800s, and Eadweard Muybridge had a lot to do with it. This striking assertion is at the heart of Rebecca Solnit's new book, which weaves together biography, history, and fascinating insights into art and technology to create a boldly original portrait of America on the threshold of modernity. The story of Muybridge-who in 1872 succeeded in capturing high-speed motion photographically-becomes a lens for a larger story about the acceleration and industrialization of everyday life. Solnit shows how the peculiar freedoms and opportunities of post-Civil War California led directly to the two industries-Hollywood and Silicon Valley-that have most powerfully defined contemporary society.

The publication delves into Lavinia Lanner's world of drawing. It traces the artist's path from early years until now. Texts and interviews with the artist give a vast insight into the essence of her abstract imagery in 3B pencil on paper, more and more expanding into space. The journey leads through depictions of found objects, organic structures, forgotten relicts of everyday life shown in a drawn close-up, resurrected in the new environment and context with main interest in the ambiguity of shapes and their respective overlappings and boundaries. ONLY DRAW WHEN YOU ARE TIRED is meant to be a process-oriented guide through Lanner's studio life, an invitation to reflect on the very basic means of drawing as well as an unsaid instruction on how to turn everyday life into a set of pencil lines.

From the artist: "I render a refreshing dimension of abstract ink-brushing landscapes with an enriched frame of mind and passion rooted in poetry that reveals the unspoken meaning of painting. This painting is sublimated by its will power and stimulated imagery, which are imbued with a subtle fuse of intrinsic motion and poetic fluidity, allowing the inner-echoes flow to lead the brushstrokes on its own accord. It is totally sensitized and free to strive on an unlimitedly transformed landscape anew."
