US artist Heather Sheehan, who has lived in Cologne since the mid-1990s, combines elements of performance, textile sculpture, installation and video art, analog black and white photography, poetry and narrative in her work to explore and present individual mythology.For her project Sylta, the whaler's widow who cries (2020-2024), the artist combined a sequence of 40 black and white self-portraits, a short story and the costume she sewed herself into a visual and verbal narrative. Isolated with an analog camera and typewriter in a thatched house on the coast of an island in the Wadden Sea of the North Sea, Sheehan felt herself transported into the role of a pregnant widow of a whaling captain. In the short story Ich bin Sylta, she reveals the startling synchronicity of experiencing fiction during the creative process.
The book documents the German climate movement in an era in which the global climate crisis is an ever-present topic. It tells the story of people who put their ideals first and cross moral and legal boundaries to campaign for more climate protection.For this project, photographer Tenzin Heatherbell delved deep into the world of climate activists: he participated in events, attended court hearings, met the activists in private during their preparations and after their actions. With his camera, Heatherbell was there every step of the way, becoming part of the inner circle while remaining a detached observer. He witnessed how more than 3,000 police officers removed climate protesters from Lützerath who had been occupying the village to prevent the expansion of the nearby open-cast mine. The photographer captured over forty of the Last Generation's highly controversial actions staged at museums, on highways, bridges, and airports.Supplemented by personal impressions and essays, Heatherbell has created a photographic portrait that provides insights into a world that is inaccessible to many people. His intimate look behind the scenes of the climate movement allows us to see other images than those supplied by the mass media. He explores the activists' motives and their rage at what they regard as the inertia of politics and society.

In intimen, kraftvollen und bewegenden Porträts und Statements wird ihre fragile Situation sichtbar gemacht und deutlich, wie der Krieg ihr Leben, ihr Umfeld, ihre Identität und Sexualität beeinflusst.
The exhibition catalogue Dreihundert Berge (Three Hundred Mountains) comprises a select one hundred paintings by the Chinese artist Haiying Xu (b. 1975). In her work, Xu, who came to Germany more than two decades ago, continues to explore issues of personal identity at the tense interface between heritage, homeland, and migration. Haiying Xu's memories of the traditional cultures of southeastern China give rise to a reinterpretation of childhood fascination, imagination, and the experience of nature, though her paintings are also very specifically inspired by the colorful costumes of the Peking opera, classical Chinese literature, and the spatial concepts of shadow theater. Despite its retrospective character, the main focus of this catalogue is her most recent work, which will be on display in 2024 as part of a solo exhibition at Galerie Andreas Binder in Munich.

Calligraphy means ‘the art of writing beautifully’. Driven by its use in the Koran, artfully executed Arabic script became a key religious and political marker at a very early stage; since then calligraphy has played a central role in the Islamic world.In addition to appearing on paper, artful writing can be found on everything, from coins, weapons, dishes, lamps and textiles to the façades and interiors of buildings. The many types of texts offer rich and varied insights into Islamic art, culture and societies.Beyond Words presents 128 objects featuring calligraphy, most notably from The David Collection. In addition, the book contains articles on such subjects as the Arabic alphabet, classical scripts, the calligraphers and the different types of texts. The publication also explores the use of Arabic lettering in earlier European art and in modern-day Arabic graffiti.

In her multidisciplinary work, Ivonne Thein (born 1979 in Meiningen, lives and works in Berlin) addresses the current body images of a digital culture that is undergoing fundamental change due to extensive technologization. Today, new technologies are profoundly shaping both the physical body and its virtual representations in the visual culture of our time. Thein works with AI systems for her installations and places the question of the problem of imitating nature, and thus the relationship between art, technology and body, at the center of her artistic work. To do this, she combines digital techniques with sculptures that she creates by hand from silicone. Thein thereby evokes an intrusive closeness in the exhibition space, as the images generated with the AI no longer remain just a pure data set on the screen. The book presents works from 2020-2023.

Kathrin Landa (b. 1980) is a graduate of the prestigious Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst in Leipzig and devotes her art entirely to portrait painting. When the group Rrose Irwin Sélavy was founded in Yugoslavia in 1983, its members DuSan Mandic (1954, Ljubljana), Miran Mohar (1958, Novo Mesto), Andrej Savski (1961, Ljubljana), Roman Uranjek (1961, Trbovlje, +2022, Ljubljana) and Borut Vogelnik (*1959, Kranj) were aged between 22 and 29. They all came from the punk and graffiti scene of Ljubljana. Together with the music group Laibach, the theater of the sisters Scipio Nasicas, and the designers from Neuer Kollektivismus (New Collectivism), IRWIN is still one of the main groups of the artists' collective Neue Slowenische Kunst (New Slovenian Art), founded in 1984.This volume is published to mark the 40th anniversary of the artists' collective and to accompany the exhibition at HMKV Dortmund. Since 1983, IRWIN has been investigating the art history of Eastern Europe, especially the ambivalent legacy of the historical avant-garde and its totalitarian successors, i.e. the dialectic of avant-garde and totalitarianism. Since the 1990s, the focus of the group has been on challenging the art history of "Western Modernism" in a critical and iconoclastic way. The artists playfully and darkly contrast it with the "retro avant-garde" and an "Eastern Modernism".The book, which can be read from both sides, is made up of two parts: the first chapter explores the black humor that is a consistent element in IRWIN's work. The second chapter examines issues relating to the state - and how IRWIN uses them to comment on current topics such as migration.

With his first photographic album, Christian Heymann embarks on an emotional and personal journey. In dark, melancholic and beautiful shots, the photographer processes the failed relationship with his girlfriend.Faced with the desire for an open relationship, Heymann found himself in a calamitous situation, which was quickly characterized by envy and jealousy and subsequently developed a disturbing dynamic. The waning love, the appearance of other partners, and the constant struggle for affirmation left Heymann feeling numb. Die späten 1960er-Jahre waren in Westdeutschland eine Zeit der politischen und sozialen Unruhen, der künstlerischen Solidarität, des Experimentierens, oft verbunden mit antikapitalistischer Kritik. Für Ilse Henin, die in jenen Jahren studierte, war es eine prägende Zeit. In den späten 1970er-Jahren nahm sie jedoch eine Auszeit von der Kunst, da sie diese als zu stark von Männern dominiert empfand, kehrte in den 1980er-Jahren wieder zur künstlerischen Arbeit zurück. Es erschien ihr dabei stets notwendig, innerhalb der Gesellschaft eine künstlerische wie auch soziale Gegenkultur zu schaffen. Von den Werken Ilse Henins ausgehend, wird in der Ausstellung ein Netz zu den fünf jüngeren, zeitgenössischen Positionen geflochten. Die Arbeiten von Keltie Ferris (*1977 in Louisville/USA), Ilse Henin (*1944 in Köln), Hayv Kahraman (*1981 in Bagdad/IRQ), Gisela McDaniel (*1995 in Nebraska/USA), Soraya Sharghi (*1988 in Teheran/IRN) und Emma Talbot (*1969 in London) eint die Verflechtung von vermeintlich klassischen, als weiblich gelesenen Motiven, sie alle haben sie jedoch zu völlig unterschiedlichen Sujets weiterentwickelt. "Das Weibliche" als Motiv wird in einen zeitgenössischen Kontext gerückt. Die Frau ist nicht mehr schönes Beiwerk oder Projektionsfläche des male gaze, sondern Hauptfigur und Identitäts-trägerin des Werks. Sie sind starke, selbstbestimmte und sich ihrer Position bewusste Heroinnen einer neuen Erzählung von Femininität. Gleichzeitig werden klassische Vorstellungen von Weiblichkeit und Männlichkeit hinterfragt.
